Xbox Series X | S

It might be one of times where someone doesn’t understand that it’s designed that way and to drive a 1080/1440 display, less power is needed than if it was 4K which explains it being ‘underpowered’. Some games even uses different assets to the series X version of the same game - I’ve noticed when switching external hard drives one console wants to download a different version and it reduces the file sized which could explain the smaller internal drive. That aspect is really annoying though as the add on costs so much

Horribly under powered, 30fps, low res, hardly any storage, it's an indie game machine, you won't have a good experience playing any next gen AAA title on it.

See I'd always advise the x over the s if possible as the price difference is more than worth it - but this here is absolute pish.

"Underpowered" seems to be a buzz word for clowns. Seen people calling the steam deck underpowered as well. Go build a comparable PC as the series s from scratch for the same price, I challenge you.

My go-to example, as a series s owner:

You only get Xbox one x enhancements on some older games on Xbox one x and series x

nothing on series s.

corners were cut to keep the price down. I do have a one x, though it’s hassle…

If you've ever been even thought about even pretending to be snooty about Console Peasants and PC Master racers, then don't get an S.

But if you want a cheap box of super fun, I'm not sure I can think of anything in gaming that is better value.

Absolutely.

The S is a great little console compact, quiet and fast.

Don't care about frame rates etc and everything I play on it plays great. It's much more convenient and faster to pick up and play than my somewhat aging PC.

Got the S instead of upgrading the PC as decided that I didn't want to spend huge amounts upgrading the PC and well whilst the X is great for 4K gaming decided I'm not really that fussed about 4K either.

I did have a series X on launch had it for three months or so but decided to move it on as it didn't really get much use and kept going back to the PC at the time anyway and to be fair the S has all the advantages of the X except if course 4K etc.  It is essentially a next gen machine.

More than impressed with the S as it fits my use case perfectly. Hardly care about the PC gaming since getting it so going forward just sticking with the S so convenient. Coupled with GamePass it's a great combo.

My PC is in a different room from my couch, so having an Xbox is cool. A lot of the same games are on both versions of Gamepass, plus it’ll do emulation and run Moonlight, letting me stream from my PC with GeForce Experience.

Series X in the living room, Series S upstairs with my old 1080p telly.

Not fussed about 4k or framerates……back to 2007 and the ps3 for you!

I guess this “series s shit or not shit” tangent is sort of my fault for bringing it up so I should clarify.
I have a ps5 and a gaming PC, so the series x doesn’t really appeal. The appeal of the series s is just that I like the small form factor, it’s relatively inexpensive (for the next 2 weeks), I recently paid for 3 years of game pass ultimate, I’d get an Xbox controller that I could also use with my pc. Finally, this is probably just an excuse/rationalization of a whim purchase, but with electricity price increases I started feeling a bit like running certain games on a gaming PC drawing what I think is probably 400-500 watts is probably a bit wasteful compared to a series s using 70 watts. Depends on the game and how much the graphics etc matter. That said, the purchase of the series s costs money too so like I said maybe I’m just looking for excuses to buy something.

@partious it is the absolute perfect companion to a PS5 and a PC.

If you can game away from your desk in another room or living space, and want the various treats gamepass has on offer from a couch, go crackers.

It is quiet, tiny and incredibly impressive at its price point. Even if it was an indie machine, like you say you get a controller too. But it is not just an Indie machine. It plays everything else great, and my Sea of Thieves pal absolutely wrecks on his.

It really is not underpowered, just a petulant mentality that it is holding gaming back/ and/or runs games like shit. Not true at all.

Reporting in...

Series X in the front room connected to the big ol' 4K TV (honestly barely use it due to being mostly a retro or PC player).

Series S in the office connected to my gaming PC via capture card and some 1440p monitors (used more, but still second to the 360...).

I know it's missing the point a little, but it's a damn shame the Series S doesn't have a disc drive. It would have been great to retire the 360; not that there's quite enough backwards compatible coverage... but you know, would have been nice 🙂

No 360... :) Usually on some arcade racers :)

However the Series S does have stable frame rates more often than not in games so it's a step up from a base Xbox One.

Think because I've been gaming that long I don't really care that much about certain things anymore.. 4K? Well its great when you sit close to the screen and can see the detail on the textures etc. However from my experience when sat back on a sofa 1080p/1440 seems fine. Frame rates are nice to have on certain games I guess. Racers in particular or fast action arcade games - story based games though I'd rather have more visual effects etc than it being pared back to hit 60fps. Of course the ideal would be to have the lovely visuals AND run at 60fps - so not feel like the game has been compromised to run at 60fps.

The whole 60fps thing on consoles is a mess IMHO with "Performance Modes" etc. They should design a game around the target frame rate and make it the best they can. IMHO the 30fps modes are what in an ideal world they (the developers) would want in terms of visual fidelity and to run at 60fps. However the consoles don't have enough grunt to do that so hence have to drop back to 30fps and have another mode. Good to have options I suppose but essentially how do you make a great game if you don't have a target frame rate in mind that it is best played at?

At the moment from my experience the Series S has yet to disappoint. It was a kind of experiment really to see if I wanted a full blown console again after getting rid of a PS5 and a Series X and well looks like its staying. I only paid £130 (pre-owned) for it so if it didn't work out hardly any investment and it delivers what I need from a console. IMHO best value console out there.

Saying all that I do think having too many configurations of consoles does muddy the waters a bit.

Lets be honest there has been a lot of rubbish talked in this thread of late and people have made some amazing comments fuelled by some odd loyalties to terrible companies but I guess thats par for the course….

However, we have to draw the line somewhere and while some of the other rubbish touted was no doubt #BANTS or plain old fashioned trolling to suggest someone goes back to playing the PS3 is crossing a line, bad enough in its era (with the worst pad ever made) but in 2023 to suggest it is frankly verging on reportable - lets all calm down and not be so nasty to each other.

Yeah feel like we need a PSA or something.

I actually didn’t know you could get them so easily, I would have snapped them up ages ago and been way less salty about JSRF not appearing in the BC list.

To be clear, it looks like some of these are only being removed from the 360 marketplace specifically and will still be available on XB1/Series consoles. The likes of Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon etc will most likely remain available on the newer stores.

This seems to be the list of the games being removed from the 360 store that aren't available on the newer shopfronts:

It‘s Jet Set Radio (the HD re-release on the 360) not Future.

It was tongue in cheek - surely it didn’t read as serious lol

I only bought Daytona but had to buy it through my 360 in the end! The marketplace website wouldn't allow me to add a payment method for some reason and kept looping back when I tried (although it did add it to my MS account so go figure!).

RE: Series S, I traded in my Xbox One S and paid an extra £70 or something to get it! Which in itself is pretty daft.

I did that and reckon it was totally worth it for the SSD load times!
