Immortals Fenyx Rising - Burp of the Wild

I always remember an interview where Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about Halo and his response was really tetchy, along the lines of "I could make a game like Halo if I wanted to, but I don't"

At the time I remember thinking that no, Miyamoto couldn't make a game like Halo. Halo was a uniquely American game, tying together design ideas and philosophies from specifically American PC games from the previous decade and executed in a fashion that was unique to Bungie. In the same way that 90s American and European developers tried over and over and consistently failed to capture what was special about Mario or Zelda, or even a slightly lesser (imo) series like Sonic, I didn't think any Japanese developer in the early 00s could've made "a Halo", and it was arrogance on Miyamoto's part to think he could.

So anyway, this just looks like that with the nationalities switched out except they followed through and made their shitty game.

Anyway, it's all academic because fuck Ubisoft.

This seems incredibly uninspired, from ripping off other games to the phone game style name.

Are we going to see loads of games lazily aping fortnite's aesthetic like this? That's going to be boring fast.

Can I interest you in Riders Republic?

This had somehow past me by when it was Gods and Monsters. The new name is painfully forgettably generic.

I know literally everyone is talking about it ripping off BOTW, but even then I was taken aback at, for example, the obvious Ganon infected castle at the heart of the map.

I think they should have just gone the distance and copied BOTW wholesale. Look how much better it looked before:

Yeah, it looks like BOTW but with Link wearing a funny hat (even down to being a similar vista to the one they used to announce BOTW), but also looks a million times better than it does now.

I really struggle to get my head around the shamelessness of this.

I mean, there's loads of great work in there.  Great models, environments, etc.  Top work all round. And I know companies want to make money, so they're going to be influenced by other products that are commercially successful and take ideas and techniques that have worked in other products.  But they had a pretty decent looking game originally, which was already pretty derivative, then BoTW was released and they must have had a big meeting at the company and said 'oh shit, BoTW is different to the last Zelda, we need to change our game too', and then spent months closely analysing tiny details of BotW and copying them wholesale.

I don't think I'd be able to sleep at night if I was doing that in my day job.

That motion blur during flight at 1:39's horrid. Breath of the Wild was forced into its artstyle by hardware limitations, and I think it's one of the last things I'd copy.

I think BotW's at its best when it's closer to resembling RDR2's landscapes with a slight cartoon filter (its famous opening pan), but it's tonally inconsistent between hints of realism (most of the ruined castle bits; the church...) and full cartoon, with lots of flat textures and smeary character models.

Perhaps something was lost in translation, I just can’t imagine Miyamoto being tetchy!

And whilst he may not be able to make Halo, Nintendo did make an FPS, I think it did alright ;)

Could've been the translation or my own interpretation.

If the FPS is Metroid Prime then yeah, it wasn't bad I guess... ;)

God I hope that’s not true, if increased hardware power lead to Nintendo joining the industry wide competition for the blandest photo realism I’d struggle to enjoy their games as much. Red Dead is only interesting to me when there’s buildings, the rest just reminds me why I hate walking in the real countryside and looking at endless identical trees.

The Truly awful title sounds like the kind of shitty made-up game name you'd get in an episode of CSI where they're investigating a serial killer targeting gamers.

It sounds like the comic book tie in to the mobile tie in to a game.
