Immortals Fenyx Rising - Burp of the Wild

I touched on this in the 'most desirable next gen feature' thread but I tried 30fps on this after 15 hours playing at 60fps and I just couldn't do it. Maybe I should have just tried 30 from the beginning but I can't get used to how it looks and feels at 30 now and I'm honestly not sure what the visual improvements are meant to be (I switched back after about a minute, maybe the improvements weren't apparent in the area I was in).

So after veto-ing all Ubisoft shit after this year someone bought me the Switch version of this for Christmas. Quick answer - give it a go or trade it in straight away?

Edit: NVM, Ubi don't deserve my time. Trading it in Monday.

This is really quite nice, light and relaxing. Far fewer statues/towers than you’d normally get in an Ubisoft game, and since I’m only a few vaults in they’ve not started to bore me yet.

better narrative framing than BoTW too

Was a bit disappointed to finally get to the second main area on the island and find that basically nothing is different, even aesthetically. It had some deer I guess. If the differences between areas are this small throughout I can see myself mainlining it sooner rather than later.

I didn't choose the same second area as you - I went for Ares and it was very different. You'll find plenty of interesting terrain.

Clocked this today, and had plenty of fun with it. Nice endgame sequence with some lovely story stuff, not horrendously difficult. Considering how many Gods were left out, I'd certainly play a sequel. Although one set in the world of Hindu mythology could be a lot of fun too, though I imagine it's not really an option to do these with religions that are still active in the mainstream.

Does the narration become less incessant as it goes on? Couple of hours in and a few smiles aside I dislike the writing quite strongly. It's like having a bad children's cartoon playing in the background as you explore.

Played this for a few hours now and this is by far the worst aspect of the game for me. I can’t stand the dialogue/narrative.

I can’t figure out what they were trying to achieve. My best guess is Greek mythology for a younger generation, but even then it’s a stretch.

I can’t ever imagine a bio for for Zeus reading:

God of the sky and thunder

King of the gods

Sarcastic juvenile

The rest of the game seems fine so far. They have borrowed heavily from BotW but it’s not in any way bad. I’ll happily continue to play but may well have to look for an option to turn the dialogue off!

It's just a bit of fun and all the better for it. It's not like the narrative is intrusive or slows the game down (I'm looking at the tedious cut scenes of Miles Morales that can't even be accelerated, let alone skipped)...

Obviously it's dividing people, but I was a big fan. I listen to the 'Lets Talk About Myths, Baby' podcast, because I like people talking about mythological figures in a relatable modern context.

The absolutely absurd accents just helped for me. It's a saturday morning cartoon expression of the mythology, with a little subversiveness. As such, the Adventure Time add-on pack is well pitched.

Not for everyone, evidently, but it's the least po-faced example of a genre that desperately needs more levity. And I absolutely welcome that.

It's not always obvious where the orbs are and they can be spread out across a surprisingly large area.

The map that tells you where to put the orbs also tells you where they are in relation to one another. I thought that was pretty neat.

There’s basically green land, slightly less green land, brown land and grey land from what I can tell. And snowy and fire lands which I haven’t visited yet.

I've uninstalled it. It's fine, does nothing wrong per se but it's completely uninspired. There's nothing there for me to elevate it above the open world mulch.

These games are virtually clickers at this point, there's so little to engage with beyond the surface. Low-level distraction, watch the numbers.

It's the kind of thing I used to play with a podcast on in the background, zone out, anticipate the next dribble of dopamine, watch the candle burn. I've had enough of that.

No disrespect to anyone who enjoys it, I should say, but I'm done with this kind of thing.

I’m still having a great time with this - opened up the map, apart from King’s Climb and am dabbling in a a bit of all the mainline quests. I was a bit disappointed that Athena and Aphrodite’s areas seem similar, and so do Ares and Hephaistos’, but there is a good bit of variety when you’re actually in them - Ares’ is surprisingly vertical.

For all it’s faults in comparison to BOTW, it still feels like I’m making my own adventure much of the time. I also love the environmental puzzles. Most of them are pretty simple, but some are ingenious. It could probably do with a few more environmental factors (wind, ice), BOTW style, so they could make some even cleverer ones, but even without that, you can tell a good deal of effort has gone into some of them.

Minor spoiler from one of the optional shrines:

Spoiler

This put a big smile on my face when I saw it. It’s a bit of a shame that it’s actually quite a finnicky thing to do, though, and long outstays its welcome. They should have made it quick and easy to do, to keep it novel and fun.

Also, where do you find new wings? I’ve been at this for nearly 20 hours now and still have the starter ones!

I think you can definitely overdose on this kind of game, and Ubisoft is infamous for making the same large-map-with-icons open-world adventure with a different art style and story.

Still. As you uninstall I’m installing to try it for myself!

The stamina gauge can fuck right off. Especially when it depletes during gliding.

You just need to use lighting to build it up or keep refilling it with the copious amounts of blue mushrooms dotted everywhere. Or stop gliding for long distances. I favour the mini game of plummeting to the ground and deploying my wings at the last possible moment.

I’ve finished the first big area and probably heading to the war zone next. Like crystal maze.

There are nowhere near as many icons in this and you uncover as much as you need.

Still finding this huge silly loving Christmas fun. It’s beautifully made.

What’s the deal with the wrath zones? You keep getting them every so often until you enter their lair and kill em?

Yeah. You can just keep moving though, and the wraith is very unlikely to catch you. The fights in the lairs aren’t bad.

Hephaestus’ Vault has some great puzzles in it. Really odd that the mechanic they’re all based on doesn’t seem to show up anywhere else.

But in between his Forge and his Vault, the setting and puzzles are Zelda tier. I’d love to see them try a sequel - cut some of the fat off, improve the writing and invest a bit more in world building and the more inventive puzzles, and it’d be a stone cold classic.
