I binged up to date on this over the weekend and really enjoying it so far.

 

It's a series based on the character played by Jason Sudeikis for NBC to advertise the Premier League in the states.  In this he is a US football coach with no experience or knowledge of "soccer"who gets a job at a Premier league team

 

They have changed his character as the way he was wouldn't make for a great series but it's just a nice show to watch with a good cast (Juno Temple and Nick Mohammed are always watchable)

Season finale, was a pretty good example of an ‘emotional rollercoaster’.

 

Really enjoyed this, definitely recommend it for an easy watch. Would be good one to watch with kids for some of the lessons Ted puts over but it’s full of swearing so one for the teens.

 

Hope there’s another few series of this but as the man says, “it’s the hope that kills you”.

This has to be my favourite show of the year.

 

Was worried after the first episode but from episode 3 I was fully in love with everything about it. The characters are just so damn good and the 'feel good' nature of everything is a complete break away from the norms of comedy. By the end I was insanely invested. I really hope they can keep this going for the next couple of series.

I'm another who thoroughly enjoyed it - only put it on on a whim, based on a surprisingly high IMDB score. but to be honest I'd decided I liked it before Ted and Coach were even off the plane, and I ended up loving it. Really nice change of pace to watch something that's almost always so upbeat and positive, even when it's not all going according to plan.

Definitely one of the best shows of the year, if not for a long time.  Can only echo the comments about it being good to watch something heartwarming and positive.  For those turned out by the premise, it is as much about football as Star Trek is about a spaceship.

 

I think that it is good to watch a comedy about the characters and not situation.  I don't think that I've watched something in a long while where you let out an inner "yes!" when something good happens to a character who you feel deserves it.  You get invested.  Some surprisingly subtle and interesting things to say about quite deep topics, such as toxic masculinity and the role of high profile women.

 

Sudeikis is obviously the focal point, but I though Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple were completely brilliant as Rebecca and Keeley respectively.  And Coach Beard is a laidback, one sentence, God.

 

"“He thinks he’s mad now. Wait till we win him over”.

It was something of a surprise to find a male dominated show about football put the lives and stories of the female characters so prominently at the centre of the series.

 

What they want and how they feel is never trivialised or used as a mere plot devise for the male characters. Which given their cliched introductions (jilted spouse, ex page 3 WAG) would be incredibly easy to do.

 

It’s definitely a major part of why it’s been such a big hit and why the show works even when it’s portrayal of football is a bit shonky.

 

I kind of think of it as the tv version of Cool Runnings. Broadly drawn, likeable characters doing their best in a slightly cartoony version of a sport.

Yes, I think that the two female characters are the glue for the whole thing - the players themselves are a little bit more stereotypical, though Roys arc I thought was particularly satisfying.

 

I've rewatched the darts scene several times.  So satisfying, so well done.  There are some broad gags in it but you notice some real subtlety.  Though if you haven't seen the show, don't look it up.

When Ted says "Hey... better manners when I'm holding the darts", he's got his big smile on but his eyes are full of anger.  He's talking about being judgemental, and Rupert asked him if he liked darts, not if he played darts. Ted says "I'm more of a cornhole guy".  Ted doesn't like darts because it reminds of something he use to do with his dad, before he died.  Doesn't mean he wasn't good at it.

It’s as much about football as athletico mince. 


I love it too and don’t care about football - it might even help, as I’m oblivious to the things it gets wrong about the beautiful game. 
 

Plus I’ve just discovered that all the stadium scenes were filmed round the back of my house at Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park, and now I finally feel like I have a home team to support.

this is great - I would have given a swerve if not for this thread as suspected it would be the same as every football comedy that went before it

 

first couple are so heartwarming and you instantly root for Lasso as he seems such a decent chap, but its not schmaltzy heartwarming as the other characters take the sugary edge off things brilliantly.

 

surprisingly good.

I might make a topic at some point, but until then, for everyone who enjoyed Ted, I recommend giving The Unicorn a go. Walton Goggins is the lead and it has a great supporting cast, too. The theme is completely different to Ted but it has the same feel good factor from the three episodes I’ve watched so far.

Checked on Geektown and there is no UK broadcast for this show.

Renewed for 2nd & 3rd seasons with the 2nd due to start shooting in Jan apparently. 

 

I really hope they know what resonated so well with this one and continue down that path, the worst thing that could happen is celebrity cameos from Rio Ferdinand etc and the characters all being amplified to caricatures of what they were, which often happens in subsequent seasons of shows.

Late arrival to this but isn't it just brilliant? 

 

Only 4 eps in and its really hit me now how good it is. Not even counting the brilliance of how the series slowly chips away at any skepticism you may have initially (Its not a laugh riot after all) just as Ted clearly does with everybody else in the show. 


Just this and Ravens Quest have really made Apple TV an essential ongoing platform for me along with a number of other bits n pieces.

Agreed. It's perfect as it is. Only thing is how they theme it ongoing once the 'journey' of the first series is done. 

 

It definitely shares a lot of its themes and 'kindness is magic' sentiments from Gervais's output (Which I mainly love) and I don't mean that to put people off if they don't like Gervais but the cameo thing is the sort of thing he would do and this 100% does not need it IMO.
