(Apparently. Looking back over the 101 games I completed in 2022 59 of them involve violence implied or otherwise being used on other humans, creatures or aliens. 60 if you count Katamari Damacy so there's that.)

Being the next Harry Potter is the big draw. At least for my kids.

 

The Fantastic Beast films are too removed for my kids to be interested but having a chance to be in Hogwarts, being a wizard just like Harry? Yes please (say my kids).

 

 

As for JKR...

 

My son is 9. He still lights up every time he goes near anything HP.  It's one of the few things that still trigger child-like wonder. Regardless of my views I don't want him to miss out on this game if he wants to play it (which he really, really, really does).

 

My daughter is 11and we have had some convos about JKR. She thinks she's an idiot and literally can't comprehend her views. That's good enough for me. She should play the game all she likes.

For some, it seems that JRK being a hateful bigot and the game funding that abuse/ highlighting her is crossing a line.

 

If for you its not, then so be it.

The crazy thing is, I tend to agree with them on most things politically, but I really don't like how miltant they are about this game. I've loved reading her the books at bedtime (literally finished Order of the Phoenix last week), we took her on the studio tour for her birthday last year, we've even played through some of the PS1/PS2 games. I don't like being told that I'm a terrible person for wanting to buy this game to play with her. Maybe it's cognitive dissonance, I dunno, but it's pushed me away. I also don't like that if and when I do play it with her I'll probably end up putting myself on private to prevent friends and colleagues from thinking I'm a terrible person.

The problem is that no matter how you spin it, sales from the game go to JKR who will use her money to aggressively pursue an agenda of making the lives of a whole group of people worse and invalidate them. You can't mesh that with 'but I don't want people to think of me as supporting that', because even if you're not supporting her actions for those reasons, you're supporting her actions.

 

The best thing to do is to stop giving a shit what other people think and just be honest that you're going to prioritise your own enjoyment of things on this one. There's no shame in it - no ethical consumption etc etc, but leaving a community and putting yourself on private to avoid the 'judgement' that I suspect you realise is on some level or another is valid is a strange path to take. You do you, and be honest about it. Have your friends ever eaten anything made by Nestle? For sure they have. Proper assholes supporting that company.

 

Again, etc etc.

 

I'm going through something similar with Diablo 4 at the moment. The Diablo games have been a key part of my gaming habits since I was a teenager, and I desperately want to buy the new one. Like, super strong urges with a rock solid nostalgia backbone. I suspect I won't in the end because I simply can't give Blizzard any money after hearing the stories that came out and the fact that they've not seemingly made any efforts to change anything, but I do understand exactly what you're saying.

I get that you find the cognitive dissonance uncomfortable - as I said above, you'll find it much easier if you just say "I am prioritising my own enjoyment on this one" rather than come out with stuff like the above. It doesn't matter how much money she has, the ethical stance of "I don't want to financially support an aggressive transphobe" is completely legitimate.

 

If you just want to not think about that side of it, that's totally cool.

You're right. I'm not sure why this one bothers me so much when I no doubt buy/use plenty of things made by other terrible companies too. Tech in itself is full of them (Foxconn etc.). It's definitely cognitive dissonance.

And half the people judging you will be posting from iPhones, buying From Software with their Tencent backing, buying EA, Activision or playing Blizzard games. 

 

Plenty of games that Era will happily allow discussions about actively try to hook children on gambling. Little kids getting hooked on gambling but they like Madden/Fifa so we'll let that slide. 

 

Plus have people actually researched how their gadgets get made? The entire supply chain from mining to production involves exploiting poor people and human misey. For fuck sake the factories where IPhones were assembled had netting outside the windows to catch people who were driven to suicide working there. 

 

I'm old enough to remember when Nike had small children stitching their products together yet the same people judging you will be decked out in Nike gear. 

 

The Chinese government is fucking horrendous yet people will happily buy games that were made with Tencent's backing. The 2022 goty that many people consider the goat, Elden Ring, was partially backed by Tencent who have direct ties to and support one of the most brutal and oppresive regimes on the planet.
