This is an odd argument

How many people regardless of gender do you call cunts to their face? Are you in a pub glassing blokes calling them cunts? Sounds fun!

Blokes do it all the time to get me another, although usually in a light hearted way.

There are certain people who call women cunts.

Is a useful diversion from discussing transphobia?

I don’t think it’s a diversion. It’s a discussion on the discourse.

Do you think calling women cunts helps when JKR and her followers are convinced that everything surrounding trans rights is about telling women they don’t get a say? Is it really the best way to spread a message of equality and respect?

I think you’re a misogynist. Hope that helps.

And there’s no way you’d say it to a woman’s face. And probably wouldn’t describe a woman as a cunt in front of other women.

There’s a big difference between calling a man a cunt (which can also be done affectionately) and calling a woman a cunt. It’s the word men have used to tell women they shouldn’t speak.

What in the holy fuck?

You think I'm a misogynist because I called JK Rowling a cunt?

I....don't....eh?

Will tell you this, I'm not. And you are coming across as a prick.

I don’t really care how I come across on this topic. I’m anti-misogynistic language. I know it will be unpopular with some.

Whilst I accept using it is actually offensive to women and will stop using it. The bit in bold is just incorrect and I'd rather you stop implying it. Because as already pointed out, it has been used but not to be misogynistic in all cases.

But there are certain people - as in not everyone does it.

I don’t mean there’s certain people who fit a neat description.

I very much respect the position you’ve taken on it.

 Will not use it anymore.

I never once in my life have used it in a misogynist way. It's a term that gets used in everyday language where I am.

Note to self. I will use prick, bam, bastard, bellend, wanker and shitehawk from now on.

Fair enough, but your statement does imply that it is a certain type of person that uses it, which we have already identified isn't exclusive. I now understand what you mean but maybe we should all be a bit more careful with our language (yes, I am a hypocrite, as I can't help but tie my words up in knots due to the ADHD and Autism  )

I’m not bothered by men using it to describe another man. Or a woman using it to insult another woman.

But when men use it to insult a woman it’s beyond awful. It’s the word as a gender we as men have used to really out women in their place. So none of need to be part of that horrible history. No matter how much anyone might hate a woman.

have you always been? If not then when did your realisation land? You realise that those who use problematic language are not always the label you wish to brandish them with. Education is a process - calling someone a mysogynist when they call a woman a cunt (and no other sign than using the word) is not going to educate them it is more likely to create a barrier to realisation that the term is problematic.

When you called a woman a cunt, if somone had called you a misogynist straight off would you have railed against it or said oh yes you are right I am a woman hater.

Listen to one of our podcasts and you'll hear why ;)

Can't string two words together without five more trying to come out at the same time!

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever called a woman that. Not because I’m a perfect human being or because I have a daughter but because it’s always made my skin crawl when I’ve heard a woman called it.

Everyone has a post history and everyone can slip.

Personally I am against misogynistic language and I try not to use it anymore but I am not and never was perfect.

I am also against racist language and I do not use it anmore but I am not and never was perfect.

I would hope noone would call me a racist or misogynist without a bit more evidence than a single instance. Certainly I am learning all the time , as are we all. I think the trick is to learn from it. Many posters and people have given JK Rowling a shit ton of chances and rope and she keeps associating with transphobes.

And all this argument/pages of invective stems from the fact that trans people have said you cannot be an ally of trans people and buy this game. That is it - not that you are a transphobe or you hate trans people or that you don't think trans women are women etc etc Just that they don't feel you are an ally.

Just to throw it in there... Can anyone call an NB a cunt? Thus does it make them the one true one?

This crossed my mind but I don’t have an answer.

The word cunt has historically been used as a weapon of oppression. So I guess for someone who is NB it’s whether that individual feels ‘oppressed’ by the word? Rather than simply it being a strong historically-gendered insult?

Maybe not misogynist to you and intentionally meant that way, but how it could be received and perceived and the effects it has on others is outside of your control. You know and appreciate that it's also one of the single most misogynistic insults to be used against a woman, and language is only meaningful inasmuch as the person you're talking to interprets it right?

You can't just go around on the internet saying whatever whenever and get defensive because you expect everyone else to have somehow understood that you mean something in a specific colloquial potentially non-misogynistic way you have decided. You wouldn't walk up to someone in a pub in London and start talking about how much of a cunt a woman is, right?

I’m not telling people they can’t/shouldn’t hate JKR. I’m saying they shouldn’t call her or other women cunts.

I’ll be honest, if I heard/read you saying/posting something racist I’m afraid I would consider you a racist based purely on that. Maybe that’s not fair - I don’t know. But I probably wouldn’t think ‘oh that person using racist language, I should get some context for that’.

It’s been said that you cannot be an ally to trans men/trans women/non binary people if you support a product linked to someone with a history of transphobia.

You can’t be an ally to women if you call women cunts.

Maybe we should treat everyone with dignity and respect?

I'm Scottish and don't call women a cunt. I don't think Scotland's long and noble history of generalising a very course word for a woman's genitalia to the point of meaninglessness means you get to use it uncritically.

Let's get back to something less controversial though, like the transphobic bigot's cash-in game designed by a misogynist white supremacist in which you go to an exclusive Victorian boarding school where you enjoy the slave race handling all the dirty jobs and collect the heads of members of the race of hook-nosed financially savvy types who are trying to take over the world.

Also, the slave race are the bad guys.

You had weirdly selective quoting when the top of his post he says that he's going to stop using the word.

Feels slightly pointless explaining why someone shouldn't use gendered insults to women just after said he won't.
