They’re banning people from mentioning a game that isn’t allowed to be discussed.

If they preordered it and didn’t discuss it over there then they wouldn’t be banned.

Yes it’s all a bit Orwellian with its enforced groupthink but they’re entitled to set the rules as they see fit.

Oh absolutely, it's their forum, it just seems a folly to ask people what they're buying and then ban them for answering truthfully. I assume they'll ban people for including it in the sales threads as well. They'll have a forum of people who accept buying the game is transphobic, but have bought it anyway in secret.

Heavy handed tactics are only going to encourage the anti-trans brigade though surely?

I have  put a post up in the A&F thread but wanted to follow similar lines here. This thread largely seems to be ignoring the game by this point and I just wanted to put my thoughts forwards before I bow out of this thread now (unless it get's back onto game discussion at some point).

Those that keep coming back in here to discuss the trans / JK issue are largely speaking into an echo chamber at this point, it is a group of like minded people going around in circles just to ensure any actual game discussion can not be had (least that is how I feel). There was a release trailer posted a few pages back that never had opportunity to be discussed because this thread is moving so quickly on the trans discussion (and now misogyny).

My view at this point is that the trans discussion in here is achieving nothing, anyone at this point that could be dissauded from buying the game has been and anyone choosing to buy the game at this point will do so. In continuing the trans discussion in here all I can see is people getting bans for bickering with one another and if anything is probably having the opposite effect when it comes to putting across the trans issues currently. I have largely been dissauded from coming into this thread to discuss the game now and will likely discuss it on other websites. I imagine I am not the only person to do so.

In turn that means those who might have a change of heart or might learn from these discussions are no longer coming into this thread to do so. In fact I am at the point now where I have suggested this thread may be better off being closed rather than it just being a thread repeating the discussion being had in off topic. The downside to that is then the opportunity to raise the trans issue awareness with those who might not know what is going on may disappear as well, but I feel like that may have already happened.

I have said it upthread, at this point there is nothing that would persuade me not to buy this game, it has been ordered and I do not plan to cancel it and that will be the case with any others at this point. If anyone supporting the cause feels that makes me an enemy, well that's a shame but that is up to them if they want to choose to see an enemy where there isn't one.

A few comments to this post ..

- discussion on the game will increase once the actual game is available.

- I don’t think anyone is actively preventing discussion of the game. They are just talking about things they want to talk about.

-just because you find it difficult to focus on the aspect you want to read/ talk about , doesn’t mean the thread should be closed.

- accept there are people that would like this game not to exist and will think less of anyone that buys it. You don’t have a right for people not to feel that way. It’s up to them.

- in short buy the game, enjoy it, talk about it. Nothing is stopping you from doing that here.

The guy says “the game functions like a Ninja Garden-esque combo masher”. It does look more like you just find a good combo and then do that over and over.

Here is the preview in case people missed it.

I wouldn't call you an enemy. Probably not an ally but who cares. You don't know me and you don't owe me anything. If I'm hurt by someone I don't know buying and enjoying a game I'm skipping...well life's tough. Wear a helmet etc.

That's a joke right? Despite my feelings, everyone has the right to buy what they want without punishment.

I'm with you on that. I'd describe myself as being more to the left than most on the forum and I think what ResetEra is doing is nonsensical. And counter productive quite frankly.

Tbh I find the people who are like "I really care about trans issues, just not in my Harry Potter thread" a bit much.

I'd respect you a lot more if you just came out and said you don't really care and you just want to talk about the game.

To be fair loads of posters have said that, hard to spot in between all the other posts. (And I'm out, I do want to play something tonight rather than sitting on this thread hogging up space.)

You know, there was a lot going against this after development started, with Rowling’s behaviour and the debacle with the Fantastic Beasts series, but making a Western take on a Japanese character action game seems like a really safe choice.

Focusing on the game here, this is going to set a new bar in terms of ludo narrative dissonance isn't it?

Murdering hundreds of faceless death eaters isn't really very Harry Potter.

I don't see why a game like this needs regular combat at all. Surely it'd work better as a third person exploration game with the odd bit of duelling?

Plot twist: You end up BEING the first Death Eater.

I think people really want this to be as black and white as possible.

For the most part we don’t know everyone’s personal circumstances. Let’s say someone read all the HP books etc with a beloved relative who died young and the one thing that makes them feel close to that person is enjoying the world of HP, for example.

People can go through various emotional issues at the same time.

Someone could be going through something deeply personal they don’t want to share that informs their purchasing decisions one way or another. Maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to judge all the time.

Maybe I’m going soft because a number of people in this thread reconsidered their use of a particular word.

Fuck that, this game looks like a deeply average flawed character action game with a Harry Potter skin stretched on top.

That always annoyed me with RDR2. I got so immersed in that game but then you'd go into a mission where you mercd like 50 people and the immersion was shattered.

Ok, maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to judge humans we don’t really know.

A game can often be judged (and sometimes reviewed) from a single screenshot.

That sounds really boring. Combat in games is fun, if well done.  Hence so many games have it.  Very few games succeed with exploration as their main focus.

I'd argue many many games succeed with no combat. A fair number of gamers are a bit blinkered into action/FPS being the primary games but there's a whole world of stuff out there.

Combat is just a skill test. Or a playground. That can be achieved without murdering hundreds of people. Obviously it requires more effort from developers so we end up with many games, like this, lazily adopting a "fight or kill everyone" approach.

I'm always a bit disappointed when magic is just turned into lasers. It looks like you've got a float mechanic in there but it feels like there can be a much of more visually interested spells they could have used.

Yep. They could have stole the portals from Portal and the Gravity Gun from Half Life 2 and it would have been immediately more interesting.

I didn’t say games had to have combat to succeed.  I said combat was fun if done well.  I also said exploration rarely succeeded as the main gameplay mechanic.  Avoiding combat can be fun if done well, like in Tenchu games, where the combat is actually a bit of a chore, certainly in the early ones.

Really? Surely there are loads, Tomb Raider being one straight off the top of my dome. That was pretty successful. I’m sure there are thousands of them.

From the playthroughs preview it might make a welcome change from burning up poachers. The amount of time the word poacher is said.

I think I’ll have the most fun just flying around and seeing/interacting with all the Potter stuff they’ve recreated than the actual storyline. I feel it’s going to the be the same open world stuff as usual though.

It's just a hazard of doing a sort of Victoriana/ Edwardiana/ early 20th century story, it's going to be wall to wall poachers and strange people in wooden caravans living at the edge of town.

I grew up with a lot of old Just William stories and Danny Champion of the World/ Famous Five/ Hardy Boys type stuff, and I greatly overestimated the amount of times poachers, tickling trout, quicksand and liquorice water would come up in later life.

This is an open question (not aimed at you, @Unofficial Who) but I'm interested in this aspect, because to me - and I fully accept my view as a cis white man here is irrelevant as it's not my choice to make - it seems that a line is being drawn over this game in defining who is/isn't an ally. And I guess I think having such a black-and-white stance isn't helpful - again though, not my place to decide.

But what does that mean if somebody does loads of positive stuff to support the community but loves HP and buys the game; will that override everything else they've done? What about the voice actor who is in this that has had criticism from the community (was mentioned many, many pages ago) but does a lot of work to further the cause - is he no longer an ally? After all, how can he be, he's directly contributed to the game. Ditto all the people that worked on it, are they no longer able to be thought of as allies? It's been said in here that they don't count as it's a job etc, but if there's nuance available for them, why not for people wanting to buy the game who otherwise do good stuff in support?

This isn't trying to find a way for people to 'defend' buying the game or defending Rowling, it's more a slant on the separation of art & artist, which I don't think has ever involved such a person whilst still culturally relevant in the here and now (given that for many such incidences the awful things they've done only comes out once they've died) and I'm trying (badly) to articulate that this feels like a really unique situation.

Another open question for the forum off the back of this comment would be is there anybody in here whom considers themselves an ally buying this game? If so, do you consider the act of buying the game to be transphobic? How do you separate the game from Rowling's toxicity?
