I’m all for people trying to consume ethically, but I don’t think other controversies have prompted the same strength of feeling on here and cynically, I think if people liked Harry Potter more, or as a better example, it was a Nintendo game, more people would probably justify a purchases to themselves.

It will be interesting to see whether the Diablo IV thread reaches the same sort of degree of people making moral judgements on one another. I suspect not. It certainly hasn’t so far.

The forum’s not monolithic. I wasn’t aware enough of the Diablo franchise to even know there was some sort of serious malfeasance by the developers of the new one.

I’m not sure why, generally, it would be a bad thing for people to be more conscious of one issue than they had been previously. Doesn’t that indicate people are making more of an effort?

"Starting today until next Friday, February 17th, it's Magic Week here at RPS, where we aim to highlight all manner of fabulous games about magic, witches, wizards, general sorcery and other spell-adjacent tomfoolery. We're also putting special emphasis on magic games made by trans developers, too. Join us for a glimpse of what's coming up."

I imagine they aren't deliberately tying it into a review of the game.

Ah, I missed that in my read of it.

You’re not aware of the Activision Blizzards scandal(s)?

But I haven’t said it’s a bad thing. Just an observation and a slight hope that the same sort of thinking is applied to other stuff, not just the games which, cynically, I think many are not that fussed over missing out on.

You were just referring to the Activision Blizzard scandals in general which the forum talked about a tonne?  I’m still not sure what if anything you’re trying to say with this “observation”.

Only tangentially related but I just read this morning that a prominent black wizard in one of the later Potter books is called Kingsley Shacklebolt

It just another one of those Rowling 'co-incidences', I suppose.

The forum has talked about it loads, yes. My points are that things never got to the point of people calling one another out if they said they were still going to buy their games and it’s not clear whether or not it will affect anyone’s buying decisions. I hope it does.

I don't really think anyone's been personally called out for saying that they'll buy the game. And there certainly were people who took sufficient umbrage at Blizzard's scandals to find Diablo IV a less attractive prospect.

Reviewing very well, mostly 8/9s, IGN 9/10, Playstation Universe 9.5/10, Metro 8/10

IGN "In nearly every way, Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter RPG I’ve always wanted to play. Its open-world adventure captures all the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding World with its memorable new characters, challenging and nuanced combat, and a wonderfully executed Hogwarts student fantasy that kept me glued to my controller for dozens of hours"

IGN has stuck a large disclaimer in the middle of their review.

As critics, our job is to answer the question of whether or not we find Hogwarts Legacy to be fun to play and why; whether it’s ethical to play is a separate but still very important question. So just as in virtually all cases, we’re choosing to expose and address the views of the franchise creator separately from our consideration of the work of the hundreds of game developers and evaluate Hogwarts Legacy as it stands, leaving behind-the-scenes context to be considered in addition to that evaluation, rather than in place of it, so that it can be weighted according to your own values.

Also 9/10 as Uncle Nasty has quoted above.

Bought it! That'll do nicely.  It's actually good!!

Well, fair play to Avalanche Studios for pulling it off. After two decades of spewing out nickelodeon and disney shovelware it's nice to see a developer capable of so much more by being given a large budget and more importantly, time.

Do you only get early access with the deluxe edition?

Anyone who pre-ordered the Hogwarts Legacy Deluxe Edition will get to play the game starting on February 7. Unfortunately, this Early Access bonus is locked behind current-gen versions (i.e., PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5). Then again, it would prove difficult to play Hogwarts Legacy on Xbox One/PS4 or Nintendo Switch early since those versions are delayed until April 4 and July 25, respectively.

Hogwarts Legacy PC players will be able to participate in the game’s early access period starting on February 7th at 10 AM PST/1 PM EST. Those are the official times the Hogwarts Legacy team recently shared, and there’s been no indication that the Early Access times will be changed in the near future.

PS5 and Xbox Series X gamers have it even better. According to the Hogwarts Legacy team, they’ll be able to jump into the game’s Early Access period on February 7th at midnight in whatever region they are located in. That also means that you’ll likely be able to utilize some version of the “New Zealand trick” to start playing the game even sooner than that.

That's a shame. Friday it is. Can't be doing with deluxe editions. I'm already foaming at the mouth at the idea of spending £65 on a digital game (I've got £25 of Microsoft reward points otherwise I'd go physical). I still don't understand why digital versions are more expensive than physical.

I do wonder if there's a segment of GAMERS out there who would very much like to boycott this game due to the deeply cynical gouging going on with the 'early access' deluxe editions nonsense, but don't want to be confused with the people also boycotting it for wokerati tofu soy cuck reasons.

Yeah I've seen a lot of memes on Reddit along the lines of "you're boycotting the game because of JKR, I'm boycotting the game because of the preorders. We are not the same."

That crowd seem very keen not to be tied in with the anti-JKR crowd.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting the game to be shit. Those reviews are really good and make me want to play it now, even though I have no love for Harry Potter whatsoever.

I won't be playing it though.

I think Johnny Vignocchi used to work there when they did the Disney Infinity games and they put a lot of effort into them back then. You can sort of see the throughline to something like this but it definitely seems like a very different (and much bigger) game to what they’ve done before.

This exactly. To have another studio around capable to doing this kind of game justice is just and all round win for gaming and future games.

Old habits. (I used to work in libraries decades ago. Finding information for people is a weird reflex.)

Oh, you were a Librarian? Name every book.
