Although I'm against this game I also cannot criticise anybody that chooses to buy it. As that would be hypocrisy.

Whole bunch of people (myself included) playing other games using technology products that were literally built by Uighur Muslim slaves in horrific conditions.

People literally dying for our entertainment.

Surprised by how disappointed I was to get a Twitch alert just now that girlfriendreviews is going live with an early copy. They got death threats for their excellent take on TLOU2.

edit: They have a pinned donate link in chat to support trans rights. Still. Hmm.

It does seem like some on this forum are far more zealous about encouraging people not to buy this game than they were about encouraging people not to buy Cyberpunk on release despite CDPR having a long and murky history of repeatedly upsetting the trans community. I'm sure it was absolutely nothing to do with that being a new insanely hyped game from the developers of The Witcher 3 of course.

A top tip for people trying to make themselves feel less guilty for buying. Stop talking about the issues and just talk about  the game. That way we stop going down the "But if you don't do everything you're a hypocrite" argument every 50 posts

If you want to buy this game, buy it.

If you don’t want to buy this game, for whatever reason, don’t buy it.

You don’t need to justify your actions or decisions to a bunch of randoms on the internet.

Nor do you need to hunt down or otherwise ostracise anyone who enjoys Harry Potter and can divorce that from JK.

I was trying to do exactly that and got labelled a TERF for my trouble.

This is the first time I’ve seen people on Twitter upset about a game being good.

It's because everything has become political and about being on a particular side.

Wasn't the CDPR thing the GOG community manager making some edgelord posts, which he was then sacked for? And that trashy exploitative poster that you can see in-game. I'm not sure it's quite on the same scale as the Hogwarts Legacy stuff. Cyberpunk 2077 is a strange one in that the female and trans characters are generally well-written, complex people who aren't defined by one aspect of their personality, who are by turns sympathetic and deeply flawed (this applies to most of the game's characters, come to think of it) but the world itself has some gross, OTT stuff that is probably intended to push the idea that this is an exploitative, dystopian world that treats people like commodities but ultimately comes across as extremely sleazy itself. I get the sense that there were different groups within CDPR who are probably working in slightly different directions - the world building adverts, posters and TV programmes are sometimes tonally at odds to the characters and the dialogue - but I don't think it's some kind of fatal flaw in the game. The society in Cyberpunk is meant to be exploitative and sleazy, and the devs sometimes took this too far.

Not only did GOG sack their community manager the same day they made a shitty tweet, they're *a separate company from CDPR* (under the same parent company, CDProjekt).

CDPR reached out to trans community groups after the PR shitstorm to get a sensitivity read on LGBT depiction in the game.

JKR conversely uses her significant fortune and media profile to repeatedly champion transphobic bigots and lobby for the rolling back of human rights and medical care.

So yeah Majora's post is a *bit* of a reach, but at this point adult Harry Potter fans aren't exactly bothering with logic.

...

It's been hilarious to see the absolute no-hopers that the dodgier sites have had to dredge up to review this game after anyone with a semblance of a reputation passed on the assignment. Good to see RPS and Eurogamer haven't touched it at least.
