I keep forgetting to use them myself, but the silkbind attacks are just another special move really but often a particularly useful and powerful one e.g. Gunlance, one is a parry which if you time it right auto-sharpens your weapon and the other one is an aerial attack that speeds up the cooldown for your big special attack.

Although I don't think I knew this about the Gunlance. To YouTube, I guess.

I played the first demo for 20-30 mins and killed the monster first time.

On this some giant greenish badger type thing killed me twice before I took it down. Was I levelled up in the demo? Can you improve your own stats for weapon handling etc? Like strength, dexterity etc

If anything you were leveled down in the demo cuz it was fixed basic armor.

I wanna know what this green badger is tho!

That's the thing that's confusing me. They were set up in the tutorial as a method of weakening the monsters quicker by running them into walls but I've not been able to do it.

Using silkbinds increases the chance of riding the monster, then you can smash it into the walls. They are also super special moves, some are amazing.

In the demo you were towards the top end tier of Low Rank armour, which is a lot better than your Leather or Kamura armour. You also had a weapon that was noticeably superior to your starter weapon. Go to the Smithy, and start crafting better stuff. Start by making an Izuchi set, maybe. Or Arzuros, for the level 2 defence boost skill it will give you. Full sets confer bonuses, but there's really no need to worry too much in Low Rank. Just get the highest numbers you can.

Arzuros is a bear! And he's blue. Maybe Tetranadon is the green badger?

I started trying the Long Sword last night, and it just feels like I'm spamming. How do I not feel cheesy with this weapon? It's clearly good, but also annoying.

Just took on Pukei with the Long Sword, and ... I like the weapon a lot better now. The default LZ+A Silkbind appears to be bloody useless, though. It's some kind of counter, that looks cool but has you stood there waiting while the monster just gives a trollface. However, the Sakura Silkbind on LZ+X is MAGNIFICENT! Get the sword to red sharp, and slice through the monster doing about 10 hits. It truly is a thing of anime beauty.

Next up ... Charge Blade.

I've also renamed my pals. Say hello to:

Notorious D.O.G

Tucat Shakur

Cardi Beak

Are you using the ZR+A Foresight Slash to counterattack and the ZR+B Special Sheathe (and its ZR Iai Spirit Slash counterattack)? They're what make Longsword users who know the monster they're fighting well look like absolute gods, as you never have to stop attacking and you can combo into the Special Sheathe from anything, so you can keep going after landing a big attack like the final hit of the Spirit Slash combo or a Helm Breaker.

If you use the Sakura Silkbind is there anything to "spend" your gauge on since you can no longer do the Helm Breaker and missing the Iai Spirit Slash counter no longer consumes gauge? I haven't tried it yet as I like trying to pull off Soaring Kick → Helm Breaker → Special Sheathe → Iai Slash → Spirit Slash combo to spend some gauge and immediately get it back when there are big openings.

Something in Latin

I've never used LS before, so don't even know how to Helm Breaker. I did manage to get some use out of the Foresight Slash against Tobi Kadachi, though, and have already revised my opinion on it. Poor workman blaming the tools, basically! I now really like the weapon, and will no longer instahate on anyone I play with. (Unless the buggers constantly trip me.)

There's a specific tutorial for monster riding. Do that!

Can I get my owl to take photos of me and my boys posing over the kill? Sort of thing people get Facebook hate groups dedicated to them in the real world for standing by an elephant they just shot type thing.

(nb: I do not condone shooting elephants)

You almost certainly can, you get plenty of carve time in which to do that. Set Camera with left and right on the d-pad, press up or down to call it, and tap the R stick in to switch to owl view.

Once they're mountable it's basically holding R, directing them towards a wall, press Y to bash it, then B to stay on (one recovery per wirebug).

I'm just treating it as two special attacks - ZL+A, ZL+X.

Then there's ZL+ZR to ping around, climb walls etc.

Maybe there's more to it than that but if so it's disappeared from my mind in the flurry of tutorial popups.

I'm sure the game said that using the silkbind attacks would allow you to ride the wyvern, but it doesn't seem to make any practical difference in-game. I can use the attacks repeatedly and don't get the option to ride. Then a second monster shows up, I hit it once and I can ride it immediately. Odd.

Silkbind attacks (generally) get you aerial

You can then do ‘blue bar’ damage numbers (not blue numbers a blue flash around them)

These contribute to staggering the monster into a rideable state - looks stunned and like it’s ‘bound’ to ground by silk bind straps. (Attack and you’ll mount)

At least I think that’s it...

This is my first time with a Monster Hunter, barring a quick go on the Wii U one, and I now realise I've missed out on something special by ignoring it for so long. I'm absolutely loving this, I've tried a couple of weapons and landed on the big smashy hammer which I'm sticking with. My brother played a lot of World which is how I got talked into this, so we've co-oped it a bit and it's a lot of fun.

I think I've wrapped my head around the main systems now, I can already tell I'll be playing this for months. My PS5 might as well go in the bin.

Is there any way to see what the Hunting Horn melodies do? I couldn't find a way in the crafting menus.

Also when do I have to worry about new buddies?

I don't know if you ever have to. There are ones you can hire, but I'm basically using them for fishing.

The Horn melodies do literally what the Smithy tells you they do. So, Kamura Chorus does Defense Up if you play the blue notes, Attack Up for the reds, and Health Recovery for the greens. Some of them do things that I'm not even sure about, like Sonic Barrier. If you don't change the Switch skill, all you need to do is play 2 notes for the buff to be applied. Changing the skill allows you to choose when to play. But, basically, just make sure you alternate the notes, and always have one of each in your bar to RZ+X for the trinity. 100% buff uptime, god mode activated, goodbye Felicia.

Wait, what? I've just unlocked Meowcenaries, I'm assuming they're like the Pawns in Dragon's Dogma. What's the deal with sending them off in the sub?

EDIT: That was at Janski. The Hutning Horn is hilarious but fuck me they don't want you to know what shit does, do they?
