Wait, what? I've just unlocked Meowcenaries, I'm assuming they're like the Pawns in Dragon's Dogma. What's the deal with sending them off in the sub?

Yep, you can recruit the buddies and train them and swap them in and out when you're on missions.

You can send them on the Mercenary missions for resources and I think the Argosy/submarine bit is like the farm from MH: World; you select 1  buddy per sub (of which there are 3 once unlocked) and send them off to collect resources of a similar type and can boost the gathering chances with items.

The sub bit is near one of the ships in the separate area over the bridge (right from the smithy) :)

I learned a bit more about the Hunter Connect mulitplayer option and I think we may be able to use it as a way for mukkers to easily join in games with each other at any time. From what I understand if someone sets up a Hunter Connect they can then invite players they meet, or folk from their friends list to it. Once you are signed up to it, at any point you can join your Hunter Connect and team up with people that are also online rather than having to create lobbies every session and invite separately. Has anyone given this a shot yet? I'm wondering how it deals with when you have more than 4 people online in your Connect at once.

Yeah Hunter Connect works great and just as you describe. Someone creates the connect, then sends out invites. Other players can then search for that Hunter Connect lobby. If one exists, you join it, happy days. If none exist, you create a new lobby with those settings for other people to join. I don't know what happens if more than 4 players try to join. I guess it makes multiple lobbies once one is full, but I haven't tested it.

Magnamalo is down, the credits have rolled. If this is where reviewers stopped playing, then we can basically double those review scores! I consider this tutorial complete, time for the game to start.

I'll be online all day, using a Hunter Connect called RLLMUK. If what you guys are saying above is correct, then you just need to join my lobby to get the Connect, and we can spread it that way? Might not even need to actually do any quests together, but I'll do expeditioning mostly because I'm waiting for my son to get a bit further in the game before going all-in with the High Rank stuff. Some of you are on my flist, some aren't, so we should be able to get everyone together-ish in some way if we work it right. I think. My code is 8251-2550-6632 if you want to send a request.

I am absolutely hooked by this, having never properly got into a Monster Hunter before. I played a couple of hours of World and enjoyed it but was frightened and confused by the hub area so reluctantly bounced off it, and the last Switch MH completely turned me off after only a few minutes. There's still large swathes of this I don't think I properly understand but it's not getting in the way of my enjoyment so far.

Most of what I'd heard about previous Monster Hunters was how difficult it was to get multiplayer up and running so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I love the multiplayer in this. It's exactly what I want from an online game - jump in quickly, pair up, smashy smashy, repeat.

My main newbie question is this - I am sticking exclusively with my starting buddies and levelling them up as I am not sure I can be arsed with that side of the metagame at the moment. I've hired a couple of others with different skill sets and am training them up in the dojo. Should I be switching them in and out and bringing my backups out into the field more? Or can I just plow on with my OG buds?

Also I'm assuming the Argosy comes into play more later in the game when you're trying to get specific ingredients for armour/weapons/traps - or is that something I should be looking at more now too?

Brilliant game.

I have a bit of an issue with this. When I started playing World I went with the Dual Blades, which I really enjoyed until I moved over onto the hammer as a change of pace. Finding Rise a bit overwhelming at first I stuck with what I knew, the hammer, and discovered that the changes they'd made to it meant I could charge up the big hammer and then spin the big hammer around and hit dragons in the face with it loads. And I really cannot explain how good this feels.

But I read about the hunting horn and wanted to try something new with a bit more depth so I tried it out! And it was good! It was cool knowing you were helping your team out and you had to be skilled and time your strikes right in order to unload a full combo and do huge damage. And here comes my problem.

It's not charging up the big hammer and spinning the big hammer around and hitting dragons in the face with it loads is it? I'm not sure anything I've ever done in a game feels as good as charging up the big hammer and spinning the big hammer around and hitting dragons in the face with it loads. I plan to play this game for a very long time, I'm utterly hooked on it but I always have this nagging feeling that I want to try something else. But then when I do I just want to... well you get the idea.

What's the most fun weapon? Sod your buffs, sod your damage, I want to find something else that's as fun as the hammer.

For me, it's Hammer and Horn that are the most satisfying. Like you say, hitting things in the head is the best feeling. You might, therefore, also like Gunlance. And, you might be surprised at how much you actually like the Great Sword if you get used to it.

If you find the hammer the most fun, use the hammer. I can't find anything else that's as satisfying either so I'm sticking with it for now. 90% of the player base online seem to use long sword anyway so I've usually got a useful role to play.

I usually Long Sword and Hammer my way to the end, but Light Bowgun is a comfy and fun endgame option once you have your pick of the weapons and armour to put a strong set together for it.

For pure fun, in World my thing was Bow set up to use nothing but the big Dragon Piercer attack with the risky charge time, firecracker SFX and massive damage numbers all the way through the monster, but I don't think that's a viable build any more in Rise.

Nice, thanks for the info. I will pop on the RLLMUK Connect today although I doubt there's much point in teaming up with you because I'm still Hunter Rank 1! In World if you took high level players into low rank matches they would decimate the monsters and make it way too easy, if I recall they still got to keep a significant power boost even though it was capped.

All this talk of big smash smashy has made me pine for the great sword but no! I will resist and give some other weapons a fair stab (pun intended). If anyone has any tips for landing the insect glaive flying attacks do let me know, I tend to whoosh over the targets head which looks great but is only really damaging the soil..

So, what tends to happen is that players stay in the armour and weapons they are using, instead of changing down to earlier sets. I ususally make some lower rank sets specifically to avoid this problem, and as I'm avoiding going much further at the moment you have basically just given me my target for today! Full sets of LR armour and weapons, so I have some suitable loadouts for all levels of multiplayer. Cheers!

This is totally fine, just switch up the weapons as you play, feel like smashing dragons on the face use the hammer sill fancy doing that but also buffing your teammates use the horn, wanna be a posing anime badass use the longsword.

I would encourage people to also try the Gunlance it is amazing in Rise and rivals the hammer for sheer feeling of power, I just opened up a silkbind where you use it as a rocket to chase the monsters down.

Just popped in, seemed to just let me pull up the hunter connect from the menu and join up.

I realise this is probably a very dumb question - I’m struggling to get to grips with everything early on - but what do you press to actually lay a trap?

You need to use it like any other item in your bar. Press and hold L, cycle through to get it, ensure you have no weapon out, and press Y to actually set it. Then, switch to Tranq Bombs, and throw 2 of them the same way once the monster is actually in it, although you can do these first.

If the monster has ran off to go to sleep, this is a guaranteed capture.

If you're new to MH there are precisely ZERO dumb questions. No-one in here will think anything you ask is dumb because we've all asked it before (and some of us still know fuck all).

So, somebody called Mayor Sailor joined, and I have now been invited to a different Connect. Was that someone from here, who got to see me cart twice to a Barroth?  I have to head off for a while, so hopefully somebody else can host the Connect, or even a different one, and we get it to get around.

Thanks both! I think it was that I had my weapon out. I'm really enjoying it but it does feel a bit impenetrable at the moment!

All I could tell you is "Do quests, loot shit, make cool armour and weapons". If you follow the village quest giver, use the training room to get a feel for how the weapons swing and post in here you'll fathom it out eventually. I tried to get into Monster Hunter sooooooo many times but it didn't take until World, which I put 125 hours into (seasoned MH veterans are currently laughing their tits off at that paltry amount) so I'm just killing shit in the one and two stars Village Quests, eating Dango and looking at what monster bits I need for cool armour. I'll figure the rest out later.

Is it just my impression, or does this look almost as good (graphically) as MH World on the PS4 ?

I think it's testament to how a clear art direction can trump graphical fidelity. It has fewer pixels, polygons, textures, etc., but looks more pleasing. As stunning as grass reacting to you moving through it is, it's not really a necessary detail. Direct that resource elsewhere, save cycles, get an overall smoother experience.

That was me! No worries, I got over-cocky myself there.

So what’s the feeling on this game’s overall length? Is there as much content as, say, World or MH3U? It sounds like the Village quest lines are quite short but I’m hoping there’s a lot more to do in the Hub.

There's also more post-game stuff coming for free in April

It might be because I'm so l33t, but I'm having a hard time capturing monsters in this - they just die too quickly and don't go off to rest as often, like they did in World. Isn't there supposed to be a purple symbol next to their icon on the map if they're ready to be captured?

I must find a way to more effectively harvest their various body parts.

Also, this is my first time using the Hunting Horn and it is an absolute beast. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets nuked in an update because it's making most encounters pretty trivial at the moment.
