This is interesting - I wonder if it'll actually have an optical drive? I can't see that coming in cheap.

 

The PC Engine is a platform I missed out on completely. On the one hand, this means I have zero nostalgia for it. On the other hand, it's a potential treasure trove full of stuff I'd enjoy.

Yeah, I'd buy a plastic, digital-only NT Mini in a heartbeat.

 

I reckon it's a Duo though, they don't choose their fonts and colours just by pulling them out of a hat. This was their first tease for the Pocket:

 

 

Same date one year ago, come to think of it.

Unlikely that they'd announce this before the Noirs ship, though they so badly mishandled messaging around the Noir's feature set that I wouldn't put it past them.

They are an awful company to deal with, have next to no social media and don't even respond to most people. They have made some very bizarre decisions and have announced things way too early before so I wouldn't put it past them. But they produce some great stuff so sort of stuck in the middle :lol: The Pocket sounded like the ideal handheld for me but it vanished so fast with no hint of it ever being stocked again despite getting so much press at the time.

The pocket is hilarious.  Cover everywhere including mainstream outlets, what seemed like a dedicated issue of Retro Gamer... then sold out in the middle of the night to no-one and then nothing so much as a "We'll work to get more ASAP".

 

And now quite possibly an entirely new project whose factory space they should be using to supply their existing ones.

 

It's a company run by engineers, solve the problem, ship enough to not go out of business entirely and then it's boring.

I have bought both but ended up grabbing a second hand one thanks to those fees. The SG is incredible and well worth the extra pounds, wouldn't even go back to original hardware after using it.

I swap games a lot for various reasons, I'd be more than happy to use one day to day but for "It'll cost somewhere between £250 and £400 depending on luck and you'll get it sometime maybe", and that's for the ones they HAVE in stock... it's very difficult to justify.

For me I use it for MS, MD and GG so I sort of justified it with not having to keep all that hardware around. It's so much easier having a single box plus with the SD slot you can run loads of hacked games. Biggest downside is you need a MegaCD if you want to run those games or that special flash card for it but those are £300!

Yeah, I feel the same way. They should probably accept the fact that they're a successful company and scale accordingly.

So it's useless for collectors which is a lot of the Analogue's market. Plus you might as well buy a Pi if you just want emulation as a £15 one will run all of what these can. Off to my side I have piles of MD, GG and MS games as I'm heading for full sets on at least a couple.

Yeah,  I'm not super interested in GG, anything the SMS has is better on SMS after all but just not using my MDs and MSs day to day would be nice.

 

I didn't think i noticed emulation lag but I generally do better on games on hardware and given I use the exact same controller on PC and SMD/MS there's only one reason for that.

 

And related, the difference between GRID on stadia and native was night and day.

I've only heard about the PC Engine crowd rubbing him up the wrong way but given how awful and dramatic some areas of the retro community have become, I'm not terribly surprised that he'd get stuck in.

There's a fair few exceptions! The GG Shinobi games are gold and never appeared on MS, Ninja Gaiden and Ax Battler plus a fair few others.

Without getting into the whole FPGA is/isn't emulation debate, one of these machines without a slot isn't the same as emulating on a Pi.
