GTA: Amsterdam. You know it makes sense. You have yer drugs and Red Light District, you have the historical city centre with the shops making it

look like a mishmash of every culture in the world mixed together, tourists from every part, canals for boat chases, you can have everyone in the game speak English and still be authentic etcetera

really lean into the bicycles from San Andreas, because that’s the only way you can get around outside of really slow canal boat chases.

I was reading some of the comments on the link Broker posted.

God, people depress me. Loads of anti semetic, racist, transphobic bullshit. None of it challenged, not of it modded.

DSOgaming never struck me as a particular shit hole. Have I misjudged it, or is everywhere this bad?

The narrow roads and bridges around the canals would make for really tense races and once you get out of the city centre the roads become a lot wider. Going by 5, a GTA Amsterdam would also include the suburbs and the more rural areas outside the city. You have a forest there (Amsterdamse Bos) and of course Schiphol Airport is nearby. The airport, Rijksmuseum, Central Station, Amsterdam Arena (the Ajax stadium) would all make for suitable locations for epic set pieces/shootouts. Shit, imagine a heist to steal a Van Gogh in the Van Gogh Museum! A hilarious shootout in the Sex Museum! I'm telling ya, Amsterdam would be*perfect*

It's the internet. It's generally a receptacle for the unfiltered liquid shit of every mouth-breathing fuckheads every thought.

One of the final missions could involve you trying to smuggle drugs out disguised as Sinterklaas presents. Halfway through something goes wrong and you end up stealing the horse of a Sinterklaas and escaping over the rooftops as helicopters start shooting at you.

Edit: oooh and at some point you come across a racist moron dressed as the racist version of Black Pete and you get to punch him in the mouth - achievement unlocked: "he did nazi that coming'

What amazes me is that in this day and age that there is no leaks whatsoever of a game of this size.

And by leaks I don't mean screenshots, videos etc - I mean more like - drunk programmer in the pub talking about things he shouldn't be etc.

How do they manage to contain information like that? I understand there is NDAs and stuff like that but there's NDAs everywhere in the world and things still leak. Always find it kind of fascinating.

If they hold out on GTA6 too long and/or they focus on the Online portion too much, surely that creates room for something like the Saints Row reboot to swoop in and attract fans of the single player campaign parts of the GTA experience? Both Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs showed you can have a sandbox game in that vein with good controls and combat. The melee combat in Sleeping Dogs was particularly excellent. Both games imho put all the R* GTAs to shame in that regard. Now more than ever would be a perfect time to release a Sleeping Dogs 2, but alas Squeenix are the absolute kings of wasting potential.

You have to admit though that Amsterdam is a particularly good fit for the series. It's *Amsterdam*.

It has rubbish roads and the literal name of the game is about stealing cars.

I don't see how it would be that good, taken as an exact replica.

Not really, given all of the fun things about Amsterdam are best experienced in person, whereas all of the fun things to do with America are best kept at an ocean's length.

It'll be America if they ever end up making it, and probably one of half a dozen cities in America. I can't see them making a game set in Japan, if only because the games to date have been so laser-focused on American culture, both in terms of crime and in terms of pop-culture. Sam Houser is still driving the series, and as an adopted American citizen, this seems to be his area of interest, so I doubt he'll be going off and making a game about a completely different culture which neither he nor the game's target market will have much experience or knowledge of. If nothing else, the radio stations in Japan will be completely alien.

It's high time for the series to move away from the toilet humour, sledgehammer "satire" of IV & V, but I would be very surprised if the next game wasn't set in analogues of Miami or San Francisco.

Tokyo is a metropolis and generically bland outside of a few tiny areas all of which are a long way apart. And those areas are best explored on foot.

vancouver - you’ve got the ocean, the rivers, the mountains over the way, a mixture of building heights in and around a downtown core, a gridded downtown, various stadia.

then the dystopia of Chinese money, crippling social policies meaning locals can’t afford to rent even if they’re not down around Gastown looking for a fix etc

Not sure why anyone is entertaining the idea of the next GTA not being set in the US (the game's biggest market).

Because at this point it's the most boring and overused setting in videogames. It's not strange that many hope the next GTA will be set in an interesting location rather than USAgain. And we've all seen and heard enough about the USA these last few years IRL, it's not a fun escapist setting anymore.

I don't think setting it in the US again will stop many people from buying it.

However if they don't have it taking place in the US there will be loads of Americans who will take against it.

I'm not saying it's strange to want it set somewhere else – it just seems a bit crazy to think there's any chance of them ignoring the US.

This is why I've never understood people who say it's the best one. The map means it isn't.

Yeah, the flat map (and blurriness, since I went from PC GTA III to PS2 Vice City) was a big disappointment for me. Not enough Golden Girls references either.

I'm in no hurry for GTA6, I'm waiting for the PS5 version of GTA5 to properly play through that first.

I have one friend who used to get regular updates from a good mate of his who worked there. He would share it with me, but it was on the understanding that we were lucky to hear stuff and that we could possibly get this guy in the shit so we just kept quiet. Not that that counts for everyone, but we knew to just keep schtum.
