Grand Theft Auto VI - Leaking all over the place

I don't think Rockstar need to respond to this if they don't want to (other than finding our how and sorting that). Ignore the leak. Stick to their schedule. Maybe put a joke about leaks in the eventual first trailers. Be that later this year or next. Why do anything else?

The takes that this is actually a big problem for Rockstar (beyond security and similar) are surprising to me.

If this was some new IP or a lesser known developer then sure, the negative public discussion could kill its buzz before it's announced. Every future piece of PR would have to convince us it's better than that.

But it's fucking GTA and Rockstar. It's going to sell like crazy even if it looks slightly ropey on release (which I'm sure it won't as this is all early stuff). No one actually cares what this looks like right now d ok they? It's interesting at some level to pick over for a certain type of person but most will say, "oh, of course, GTA 6 is in development and this looks like that".

They have taken every internal system down with no timeline for bringing them back up whilst they investigate.

So yeah, this could end up delaying the game pretty significantly, based on how long that takes.

Personally, nope. If anything seeing some footage, even in leaked form, does raise a bit of excitement that the game is further along than realised.

Realistically though, the game is not out for at least 18 months, perhaps two years, so the amount of polish and upgrading that will be added between now and then will make the final release look like it’s a remaster of the footage seen this weekend.

If its anything like the Half-Life 2 leak, then all this does will be to delay things all the more..

Valve used the Half-Life 2 leak as a thinly veiled pretence to delay a game that was obviously incomplete and not going to make its release date anyway.

That's exactly what I thought, but I wondered if I was missing something when people were saying it was a nightmare for Rockstar.

I don't actually know if it'd be a problem for a lesser game though. I just don't think people would be that arsed about a few leaked videos.

I mean, realistically what is a few days in the development of a game that takes a decade? If they can’t figure out where the leak came from, they’re not going to carry on paying their hundreds of employees to sit about doing nothing. Even if internal systems are down, their artists and writers are still going to be working.

The idea that this might delay the development of the game seems bizarre to me. Even if the whole source code leaked, what are they going to do, cancel GTA VI and build a new engine to replace the one they’ve been iterating on for 15 years which runs the most financially lucrative game ever made?

It’s certainly no Last of Us 2 situation. Neil Druckman has been on Twitter with a “hang in there, this will soon be a footnote on the wiki article” message, which I expect is true.

Yet to this day any discussion around TLOU2 is caveated with acknowledgment of the reaction to the leaks.

Clearly they wouldn’t rewrite the entire engine, but a substantial source code leak (above and beyond the seemingly fairly innocuous code that’s been leaked so far) would be catastrophic and 100% lead to a significant delay. The online aspect is guaranteed to be a huge part of the game (not to mention where the bulk of its money will be made) and the implications for the vulnerabilities that would potentially be exposed are absolutely enormous.

I usually hate leaks of any sort and wish that relentlessly attention-seeking blabbermouth ‘insiders’ would all fuck off forever, but this one is so substantial and gives such an insightful peek behind the curtain of the biggest game there is that I can’t help but be utterly fascinated by it. Considering its pre-pre-alpha-alpha state and the purported age of some of the leaked footage I also think some of it looks stunning. The final game’s gonna be bananas if this is anything to go by.

I can only imagine the frantic moving of heaven and earth that Rockstar/Take Two are engaged in today to prevent any more significant damage. The guy that leaked this is in some seriously deep legal hot water and is about to feel the full force of Take Two’s gleefully litigious army of lawyers come down upon him, yet seems naively blasé about the whole thing.

You're making the potentially incorrect assumption that the person who did this is in a country where Rockstar can actually get at them, which might not be the case.

Having sat through the entire video leak, most of it is cutting room material which doesn't tell you very much about the game really.

But it's clearly well beyond the PS3-level visuals of GTA V, the character modelling of the 2 main characters, Jason and Lucia is well ahead, even at this early stage. Interesting to see how they do placeholder models, reminds me of those art mannequins.

Which may or may not be true, I haven't got a clue, but it sure as fuck delayed the game further than it would have been had the leak not happened. And if they used it as a way to give more time to make the game better, then I'm not sure I'd criticise them for it.

I find all the debug information on the footage absolutely fascinating!

I’ve only watched a little bit but it’s actually increased my personal interest far more than a cgi or hype trailer would. Though given I’ll end up buying it anyway…

First I’ve even heard there were any leaks of TLOU2! 😂

I kinda think its a bit of a missed opportunity to not lift the curtain on this kind of thing. Kinda like DVD commentary, or a making off.

Forgive my naivety, but couldn’t they just create a security patch like you get on iOS, for example, to sort it out?

I think that’s rather understating the scale and scope of the problem. If the hacker has the source code, Rockstar could potentially be playing whack-a-mole with them for years.
