Games that run better on the Xbox Series S|X (includes BC games as well as Series S|X optimisations)

Recommended Posts

Regarding games that do/don't work with quick resume, games that don't currently support it don't appear to interfere with the ones that do. So if you play a game, quit out, then play 5+ other games but only some of them support it, it'll still remember whatever you were playing 5+ games ago.

Might seem obvious, but it caught me by surprise by resuming Tetris Effect ages after I'd last played it.

I'm quietly hoping they'll patch it for 60fps, but knowing Ubi they probably won't because they don't want to cannibalise the sales of Valhalla.

The Witcher 3 might play there hand. If they want to keep up with CDPR they have too I would say.

I guess they will do something after Valhalla had its run in terms of initial sales. Origins also got a One X upgrade back in the day while Odyssey was out already.

Been battering through some oldies to see if they are lookers.

Dead Space  - Looks like it came out a week ago.

Mad Max  - Blinding HDR sun and super smooth explosions

Wreckfest - Really benefits from the faster loading tracks and garage.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory  - Still perfectly playable and remarkably doesn't look its age

Assassin's Creed (Original)  - you are looking at it telling yourself that it can't be the same game you played 15? years ago

Sea of Thieves  - From the crows nest the sea looks even better which is impossible but true.

Half Life 2 - Looks its age stylistically but still dripping in atmosphere and immersion.

Dead or Alive 6 - Bouncy and smooth

Forza Motorsport 7 - really benefits from the fast loading particularly when scrolling through the garage and tracks loading up.

The new pad feels great with it. Can't explain why but it's an improvement.

 ?? It always was!

Tetris does indeed look and sound wonderful.

Apex Legends looked sharper but also more jaggy when I played it last night.  Tonight, it seemed just sharper.

Ori in 6k looks lovely. My cat was watching the TV intently when I was playing! First time I've noticed. She must have an eye for quality.

Watch Dogs Legion is still ugly as sin, even with ray-tracing (bear in mind these were captured in HDR so the levels are fucked):

Valhalla is their first direct x 12 version first, and the first to really make use of a PC class CPU properly. An upgrade/patch to odyssey to occasionally hit somewhere around 60fps might be more of an engine rewrite. feels unlikely.

It's not in 60fps yet, it's a capped 30fps game. Next gen patch not out until 9th Dec. It'll have FOV slider too so should look significantly slicker.

What? Are you sure? Felt much smoother than it did on PS4, but it was a long time since I played it but I remember finding it so hard to aim compared for example with a CoD game.

But if it gets even better on December 9 then great! :)

It really does need a FOV slider.

Sorry mate. No hardware talk in this thread.   Hardware impressions thread is where to post that bit.

The Auto Hdr on some games is actually better than quite a lot of native/'authored' HDR games.

What have you found that’s good? I’m still finding it completely overdone in most cases, it’s not so much specular highlights as full-on “TV in Curries with all the settings turned up to max”.  I keep having to squint at the screen.

If you were playing before on base PS4, maybe it wasn't even hitting a smooth 30? I've seen plenty of DF videos that show games that in theory are locked at 30fps actually dropping regularly below 25 and 20fps.

Had my first go on Forza Horizon 4 and my initial impression was deep sadness as it chopped like a motherfucker. Regularly dropped frames, grinding to a halt in fact, and was very unpleasant.

And then, it just... didn’t anymore. So I got the fastest car I could find and belted it down some poor bastard’s road as the console yawned at me and asked for a challenge. I’m not very far in at all so I got to a season change where it shows a gameplay video in a highlight reel cut scene, which I’m pretty sure was rendered in 720p30, because it looked horrible compared to the buttery smooth car porn I’d just been enjoying.

Hope that that first impression doesn’t happen again!

@BeeJay re Destiny 2. Yup my One S would regularly drop as low as that or worse during public events. It's one of the reasons I stopped playing it.

Making games I like playable again for a reasonable amount of money is the reason I went for the Series S, even though I agree with whoever posted that the X is better value for money really.

@Swallow I must admit that I almost entirely stopped playing anything on my One S due to the poor performance, especially when most of what I wanted to play was also on PC game pass. Playing Gears 5 on series X, at 4k60 compared to on One S (at whatever that could achieve) is just stu[idly noticable to that point that the game is multiple times more enjoyable on series X.

No way. The CPU of the Series S/X is miles ahead of the slow Jaguar CPUs. Just unlocking framerate will push it to 60fps without breaking a sweat. See Jedi Fallen Order for a good reference point.

I agree that if you start changing the image quality settings (e.g. from a PC based "medium" or "high" profile to "ultra") it might struggle in a DX11 engine.

FH4 is the most transformative I've played coming from 1X. Obvious increase in image quality, plus the super-short loading games make a vast difference to the experience. Before, fast-travelling to the wrong race was really frustrating, and sometimes I couldn't be arsed to change or upgrade my car because of all the waiting. Just whizzing through the menus is a lot more responsive.

No Man's Sky looks and feels miles better now. I was a bit disappointed with how stuttery it was on 1X but now it's sharp and silky smooth. It felt compromised before.

Also, I played Skate 3 for the first time last night. No graphical improvements but going back to a session marker at the top of a long run is super quick and must massively improve the experience.
