Ahh, looks like some people are getting upset about a petite girl going up against a pred. Which I guess on the face of it does sound a little ridiculous considering the strength delta, even against an arnie type. But I'd also assume they address that logically and she's not flinging the pred around like a super hero. No point getting angry at a film you haven't even seen yet...

I'm still incredibly wary to think this will be as good as those reviews suggest but I might have to give it a go now. 

 

The last one was such a messy turd though and I'm sure there were some good noises about it to begin with.

Did you watch the English version or the Comanche version? Initially from the news reports I thought that the Comanche version was them shooting all scenes in both English and Comanche, with you able to choose which version you wanted - which sounded awesomely ambitious and cool - but it sounds like it's 'just' an audio dub (ie. Comanche language dubbed over the original English lines) with English subtitles. Can anyone confirm?

I checked and there wasn't an option for Comanche (I'm watching D+ in Japan). Some sections were in the language and they weren't subtitled, but I don't think you need to know exactly what they're saying. You can guess from context.

Shame. Seems like a missed opportunity, but I can see why shooting scenes in two languages might’ve been a bit ambitious - considering the scale of production. 

Appears my worries about the predator’s tech being too advanced were (mostly) unfounded judging by some recent footage. It’s the same level of ‘kind of the same, but ultimately unfair,’ that was in the original film.

Instead of arrows, it uses wrist projectiles that are fired with magnetic field technology, rather like a tiny rail gun. This is still targeted by the laser, though. So yeah, it’s pretty unfair.

Surprised and delighted this has such a good reception so far. I really didn’t want The Predator to be the last entry in this series.

I watched the English version but it did still have some Commanche only bits and also some

and I'm glad the film makers didn't feel the need to provide subtitles for those bits as the context made it clear and also a bit more menacing.

 

I should also add that where I thought the action was unclear, this was likely to be an issue with the viewing conditions rather than film.

I didn't enjoy this much at all, utterly predictable at every step, baffling accents and americanisms.
Liked: The dog, sfx, audio, standard Predator action moments
Disliked: Predator just being a massive space twat, everything else.

Are the unsubtitled Comanche dialogue bits deliberate? I ask because streaming services have a habit of fucking up the subtitles on films that have dialogue in more than one language; they often only cater for no subtitles or subtitles all the way through. I watched Last of the Mohicans on Amazon a while ago, and thought “wow, this is a bold choice by Michael Mann. You can pick up the gist of a scene just through context and body language, but still pretty cool that he trusts the audience to follow the occasional short scene in a foreign language” and then eventually realised after an incomprehensible twenty minute unsubtitled foreign language scene that Amazon had didn’t support partial subtitles, and that I had to turn them on and off depending on what language was being spoken in the scene. 
 

If it’s deliberate, then that’s awesome. I’m just slightly wary of streaming platforms ability / willingness to do subtitles properly.

I think it was an red letter media video that showed that a streaming version of a movie was strangely showing the "clean" version with actual post movie text about the characters also removed. 

 

I assume most streaming sites have that no titles version as their standard and do all their text themselves, rather than buying all the multi language (and text) versions. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit and it's just very stupid.

Dubs and subs aren't an exact science, even though they should be. Most have to be booked to order, and will more than likely come through a lab that handles content for multiple studios. Some will be hard-coded, others will be dynamic (the preferred option) and not all of them are available as described because labs don't always have up-to-date logs. Add in human error when it comes to checking and booking (many of these logs are housed on exported Excel sheets and go through several teams when it comes to ordering/booking) and it's small wonder films are shown with anything besides the original audio track.

 

This can offer fun quirks though; I once got a 'clean' screener for District 9, which had no subs for the 'prawn's' chatter. Supposing what they were saying rather than reading an English translation perhaps made the alien's plight even more dramatic than it might have been.

 

That doesn't really answer K's question, sorry. Could assume it's a stylistic choice, but as mentioned, not all streaming sites can handle multiple sub-tracks and half the time may not even properly screen their content due to sheer volume of hours (I watched an old English-language horror on Prime earlier today with random hard-coded French subs for signage... go figure)

Holy SHIT this is good. I never thought I’d be this excited by a Predator movie again.

The first act I was thinking “wow”, this is a really compelling movie even without the Predator.

 

The second was “okay, the Predator is a great catalyst for this drama”.

 

The third was just me a-hootin’ and a-hollerin as the Predator inventively tore up some dudes and then got his shit wrecked.

They used a previous line and I actually got goose-bumps from it.

 

A great movie and finally the sequel Predator deserves.

Definitely something I’d have wanted to see in SDR at times, although on a good HDR set with the right lighting it must look glorious.

Yeah. Early scenes at night were awful. It's now daytime though (in the film) and I can tell what the fuck is happening.

Just finished watching and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought if felt as even handed as it could be, what with the predator still being a more advanced species than humans back then too. Having a young female lead was a good update on Arnie et all and didn’t feel forced. Overall a great sequel for once (even though I have a soft spot for Predator 2).

It's deliberate. With the subtitles turned on, the Comanche and French dialog is just in those languages, not translated.

I thought this was really good, even if it doesn't reach excellent - maybe a 4/5 is fair. General spoiler-y thoughts:

The climactic fight doesn't quite convince, and I guess it's the kind of thing that has idiots review-bombing IMDB, but it came close enough.

 

Besides some inventive tactics from Pred, I don't think there were any real surprises at any point but it was very well made, and some scenes like Bear Vs Predator - a spin-off franchise I would welcome - are astonishing. It's a very beautiful film. I have no idea why it's not getting much of a / any cinema release.

 

The lifts from the original film were a bit clumsy. Something subtle could have worked but they pretty much winked at the camera after delivering one of the lines in particular.

 

I thought Midthunder was great - a world away from her wooden Legion performance.
