Wasn't Billie from the oriinal movie meant to be Comanche or at least half Comanche?

Nailed on he will retrospectively become a descendent of Naru.

Yeah I thought that too while watching it. Too on the nose though.

However, the main actress reminded me of April from Parks and Recs, and her brother looked liked Corey Feldman

Still think they're cheating bastards.

They are, but at least Prey had the sense to downplay the fairly absurd notion that the Predator is some noble warrior following an ancient code, as the original did. I think the only aspect in either is them not killing seemingly unarmed opponents. Otherwise, they are unknowably alien, merciless hunters and I don't know if we should necessarily understand what their sense of fair play entails, if anything. It's only in other Predator sequels and media that they've attempted to anthropomorphise this, always to the detriment as far as I'm aware.

This is tight as a ducks bum  and pretty decent to boot , along with Predator,Predator 2  there's now 3  good(one classic) Predator movies and  1 that's not bad (Adrian Brody one). There are obviously faults but some of the callbacks are incorporated pretty well.

Not particularly spoiler-y spoilers

Spoiler

I liked that the Predator's tech looked more old fashioned than his 80s descendent, a wee bit hand crafted and analogue. Not sure about the unmasked face, are the creature designs from the originals tied up in some legal limbo or something? Looked a bit goofy.

Am I being dozy or was the musket at the end being the exact same one from the end of Predator II implying that this is a different 'timeline', or that the ship would be returning to correct this ballsup? The Comanche having a predator's skull trophy seems like quite a big loose end to tie up. Leaving door open for a sequel I guess?

I thought this was pretty great. Along with the underrated Predator 2 that makes one classic and two good bordering on great

Brings the franchise level with Terminator and Alien in overall performance I guess. Whatever that means. Bet James Cameron would make an amazing Predator movie.

Found this absolutely awful. Really came close to stopping it after 70mins but pushed on.

I don’t normally watch these kinds of films but was curious by the response. Just find them so formulaic and by the numbers, it’s not that far away from a generic video game movie adaptation.

I can’t believe the whole first half hour leads up to the whole bear encounter but if you’ve seen the trailer you know the outcome.

Dreadful acting, straight to video CGI, dull plot. Best thing I can say about it is that it had some nice shots of rivers.

1/5

officially my worst movie of the year so far

It’s factory CGI, type of stuff that gets rushed due to low budgets. I mean it’s serviceable but just has no weight/realism to it. It’s not the film-makers fault, really it’s the least of the movie’s problem. I just didn’t care or believe in any of the characters.

The bear looked a bit 'Colin's bear', they went a bit overboard with little CGI animals in the little between-scene intermissions, and there's at least one 'fighting with blades CGI'd in after' Witcher type shot that looked pretty ropey. But honestly it was pretty non-distracting for the most part.

I'm not sure what "TV quality CGI" is supposed to mean when that encompasses ILM doing some of their best work these days.

This was brill. Predator is my all time favourite movies, except those days when it's Aliens. It did a bunch of things right, and some things actually better than the original.

Spoiler

The better things first; the protagonist was fantastic. She was a flawed wannabe, still learning yo become the badass killer worthy of the Predators' attention. This gave the film an interesting hook and some actual plot development beyond "wait for the characters to figure out what they're up against and then die" that we've had for 4 movies now.

It handled the 'conspiracy' angle better than anything since the first film. The first hints at it, the second has the goofiest sub-plot involving the Government, The Predator took all of the amphetamines before writing the script. I loved that when the hunters rock up they already know about the thing and are trying to kill it.

The dog. Loved the dog.

The kills and action, bar one or two moments, were great. Some of the shots in this were fantastic; a gore covered but still camouflaged Predator running across the field was brill.

I agree with the comments up thread; rolling back the Predator to something Alien - both in terms of its interactions and its appearance - was a great move. Stop trying to make them heroic anti-heroes! They're space dicks!

I thought the predators tech was cool, and its appearance was fantastically creepy. It was one ugly motherfucker, and that's how it should be.

I liked the move away from the laser cannon, that was nice. Also, the playing around with expectations with its arm bombs worked well too.

Just brill all round, really.

What was going on with Pred’s mask in this? It seemed to be bone, with some electronics, and did it or didn’t it have a vacuum seal? They may have shown this, can’t remember.

Spoiler

It had a seal, but it seemed to work differently to the originals. The Pred appeared to have some kind of implant in its skull that it attached to and there was an audible disconnect when it came off.

We've had enough variety in the films by this point to be cool with tech changes though.

I either had my brain switched off or I’m a bit of a dumdum, but

Spoiler

I really liked it when she got covered in mud and then immediately washed it off. Then when the herb that makes you cold came into play instead I was shocked I didn’t see that coming. Wasn’t overplayed too.

My only gripe was the lack of subtitles, specifically when the French turned up. I get why they did it but I still had to switch them on to see if this was a problem with my stream (which has happened before) rather than a choice. Ideally the whole movie should have been in original languages and subtitled…that and the Predator didn’t laugh enough!

Oh shit I didn’t get the plant bit at the end at all. So the Predator couldn’t see her? I thought it ignored her because it either a) did not consider her suitable prey or b) was sexist and only hunted male humans.

Anyway, I absolutely loved this. Was gripped from the outset. I really like these brutal wilderness survival films

like Southern Comfort and The Hunted. This is in that vein. In particular the Predator looked awesome.

Best Predator movie since the original for me. Loved it!

I can't say I had any real problems with the CG at all. It wasn't top tier stuff, sure, but there was nothing especially egregious and, far more importantly, I didn't notice any of the truly immersion-shattering physics nonsense that plagues so many other films. The bear scene in particular felt brutal and weighty to me, with a very claustrophobic POV, and worked just as well as scenes in The Revenant, for example, which I think other people have also referenced.

Perhaps the MCU and things like the Hobbit trilogy have lowered my standards here, so that I'm happy as long as people aren't bouncing around consequence-free like rubber balls or flying up into the sky for every fight.

Looks like DannyTRS is coming good. Interesting to see how he started as a commercials director/minor internet personality pre-YouTube and has now done 2 decent sequel/prequels. Hopefully he'll get the chance to do his own new thing at some point in the future.

Wasn't he a SlashFilmcast guy? God, they were so smug.

This was my take, loved it.

I also thought that...

Spoiler

The reason the "new" Predator has metal armour is learning from mistakes of the past. And also, I'm sure that Predator has a cannon on the shoulder? Maybe that's why they eventually separated it from the mask due to unfortunate events in the movie, as well as being able to shoot in a near 360 direction.

I loved a few of the rug pulls as well. Covered in mud but doesn't use it to hide in plain sight, preferring to set a trap.
