The soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, the music was fine, but the original Predator soundtrack is a masterpiece and at least some callbacks to it were surely deserved?

As much as I love the music from the first Predator it's so similar to the score from Back To The Future as to be distracting.

"When I was little, we found a man. He looked like... like, butchered. The old woman in the village crossed themselves... and whispered crazy things- strange things. "El Diablo cazador de hombres." Only in the hottest years this happens- and this year, it grows hot. We begin finding our men. We found them sometimes without their skins... and sometimes much, much worse. ..."El cazador trofeo de los hombres" means "the demon who makes trophies of men".

The old unreliable narrator. The times a predator turns up it a bit hotter than usual. Human nature to assign meaning to things to make them make sense takes over, and suddenly you have "It always happens this way".

We've seen Predators in snow before.

I watched the original again the other week and, as good as it is, the music is very much more of an 'active participant' than you tend to get in modern movies, very much up front and in your face for large parts of the film. Works great for movies of the time with their pacing and the way theyre shot etc, but not sure anything close to similar would fit for many modern movies, certainly not Prey. Most they could accomodate would be a little sting or motif hidden away somewhere.

I enjoyed this a lot as a skilfully done remake of the original, with really skuzzy, nasty gore - the kind we got in the Halloween reboot from a few years back that lends the whole endeavour an unmistakable air of legitimacy

A few contrivances annoyed me:

Spoiler

The sudden hard turn to Stupidsville the Predator takes at the end, and the medicinal plant that makes you so cold you don’t emit any detectable body heat being the most obvious.

But apart from that it was a great romp, and even had the decency to come in at a tight final running time.

The plant I agree with, far less natural than mud or something similar but at least they set it up with the hunter, I guess.

The pred becoming suddenly stupid though? It's a dumb as a doorpost all the way through the movie.

I very much like that part of the evolutionary aspect of the Pred between Prey and Predator is them being less stupid, and not just laser cannons.

The plant

Spoiler

I assumed this worked mainly because the preds heat vision is tuned to a fairly narrow range, so that a difference of more than a few degrees throws it off. Bit of a contrivance of internal head-canon but makes as much sense as anything.

The pred

Spoiler

I think it's more that it totally wasnt expecting the humans would be very capable of outsmarting it, so it got caught out by its own assumptions. The trappers try but obviously just take the same approach they would with anything, so fail, whereas Neru is a lot more observant and applies lessons learnt about that specific creatures behaviour.

Also based on its interactions with other animals, either this pred is quite inexperienced, or the species in general is not too familiar with earth as yet. I've seen arguments prior to this film being made that you could say the same of the Pred 2 pred, too (lol) - having seen it recently, it def comes off as a bit, uh, overstimulated by being in the middle of a target rich city, and just goes off on a total unrestrained bender. Hell, if not for their own single mis-assumption about it only having heat vision, Buseys boys would have successfully caught it.

And when you meet the rest of the clan at the end you have to assume it's the most junior of them all, right?

Hell, even the original pred has a slip-up where it gets net-trapped (and squeals like a total wuss), before going on to frag everyone. Until I rewatched Pred1 recently I'd forgotten just how upset it sounded when that happened. :D

I always took this as the main recurring thing with pred films - theyre capable against people generally, but when they inevitably come across the rare outlier who is way smarter than the average human, they tend not to be expecting it due to their own arrogance/complacency/assumptions and thusly get blindsided before they can adapt. It'd be interesting to see a pred movie where the pred understands early on that it has underestimated the 'main' human and changes tactics a bit, in an almost-inversion of the format with they trying to outwit each other.

  • 7 months later...

Finally sat down to watch this last night. It’s the first Predator movie I’ve watched since the original.

I liked it but wasn’t totally convinced, there were several times where any kind of logic would have seen the predator do his thing

Spoiler

Kill her off and the movie would be by about 60 minutes long

but it was fun and well

put together overall, with the exception of a couple of dodgy CGI bits.

We watched this tonight, I thought it was excellent, and in some ways actually better than the original. My only real gripe with it was the shot quite early on

Spoiler

of the ship departing and then the cloaked Predator being revealed.

I know the marketing department had already spoiled it before it came out, but it didn’t need that reveal so early on in the film. Our first glimpses should have been from the main character’s point of view, realising she wasn’t up against a big animal but something else entirely.

But that really is nitpicking. It was just a really taut action film, and it looked beautiful.

I had a similar gripe, but then the original started out in pretty much the same way.

Certainly would be amazing to see a Predator unexpectedly appear, but at the same time, I dunno if I'm going to start watching the film in the first place.

It sounds like that was all studio interference on that front. The director wanted to keep it a secret as long as possible. He didn't even want to reveal it in the trailer.

They should just drop a predator in other films randomly. Olympus Has Fallen? BOOM - predator. Anne Hathaway Romcom? BOOM - predator. Muppets caper? Not anymore, because BOOM - predator. This is what AI was made for.
