Out of my element?

Simply participating in the 'discuss' part of the original post. Sorry, Mr. Undertaker, but you're not the only fella on these boards who's allowed to have the extreme views no-one agrees with, you cheeky sausage, you.

Not that this is an extreme view.

Is it really better than 'Miller's Crossing'?

Seriously?

Nope. Nor is it better than Fargo, although it's a little pointless to compare different genres.

Is it better than Raising Arizona?

No.

So that's that then. It's good (certainly not a bit shit), but nothing to get too excited about. Fargo and Miller's crossing, on the other hand, are.

Maude: Do you like sex, Mr. Lebowski?

The Dude: Excuse me?

Maude: Sex. The physical act of love. Coitus. Do you like it?

The Dude: I was talking about my rug.

Maude: You're not interested in sex?

The Dude: You mean coitus?

<_<

I love The Big Lebowski. I think it's weird movie in a way because nearly everyone I know (myself included) was a bit 'neh' when they saw it first. Then you watch it again, you care a bit less about the sprawling, half-random plot and notice something new about a character, about one of the Dudes mannerisms, or the fact Jesus' bowling partner is named Liam. Then, suddenly it takes over your entire life and you spend your days endlessly quoting it like I do.

I've seen everything the Coens have done and the Big Lebowski is by far my favourite.

Like Numbre Six said, it's a bit pointless to compare genres. In terms of comedy, this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Great acting, music and visuals as well.

'What's this day of rest shit? What's this bullshit? I don't fuckin' care! It don't matter to Jesus. But you're not foolin' me, man. You might fool the fucks in the league office, but you don't fool Jesus. This bush league psyche-out stuff. Laughable, man - ha ha! I was gonna fuck you in the ass Saturday. I fuck you in the ass next Wednesday instead. Wooo! You got a date Wednesday, baby!'

Jesus Quintana, characters are rarely more memorable.

Jesus Quintana: You ready to be fucked man? I see you rolled your way into the semis. Dios mio, man. Liam and me, we're gonna fuck you up.

The Dude: Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Jesus Quintana: Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."

The Dude: Jesus.

Jesus Quintana: You said it man. Nobody fucks with the Jesus.

Walter Sobchak: Eight year-olds, Dude.

What other movies have they made?

Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, Hudsucker, Fargo, Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Man Who Wasn't There, Intolerable Cruelty.

In that order.

All essential viewing, although Bloody Simple is a bit raw for some tastes. Barton Fink is probably the weakest of the lot. For me their big strength is that they don't really conform to usual stereotypes. Their movies just don't fit into the nice neat pigeon holes that Hollywood is used to.

Miller's Crossing is one of the great movies of our times. If a Hollywood bigshot had made it rather than a couple of relative unkowns it would have swept the board at the Oscars. Very differerent to Lebowski though - proper dark gangster film/love story (ish). Essential viewing.

Their remake of The Ladykillers is due out in a couple of months, too.

True. Same with everyone I know.

The bit with the ashes at the end is most excellent!

I love TBL and would rate it as my favourite 'Brothers film. The others that I've seen have all been classic too, apart from The Man That Wasn't There, they gave that one a fitting title.

Wor Lass only likes O' Brother and Intolerable Cruelty, it must be something to do with George.

(wait 'til therearerules hits this thread)

It's brilliant but its no Millar's crossing.

Fargo has prettier photography too.

The Coens have made so many fine films that its hard to pick a winner.

Barton Fink was a bit special too IMO.

I would say Lewbowski is the most watchable and instantly funny coen brothers movie but Millar's Crossing is best IMO in terms of plot, cinematography and just general Coenness.

Lebowski is very good, I like all the Coen films i've seen, even Hudsucker Proxy. I think it's one of my favourite coen films certainly, I really can't split them actually, Fargo, Lebowski, Intolerable Cruelty, O Brother, all quality.

Not seen Millers Crossing, Blood Simple or Raising Arizona. Worth a watch?

Milller Crossing - Brilliant. Watch it through uninterrupted. One of the best films of the 90s, without a doubt.

Blood simple - quite hard work at times, and much more raw than the others, but worth a watch for sure.

Raising Arizona - Lacking the subtleties of some of the later films, but still excellent. Anything with Cage, Hunter, Goodman and Coen mixed together is bound to be good.

I downloaded 'The Man In Me' by Bob Dylan from the bowling dream sequence. What a great song.

There is so much to love about this film but if I had to pick a favorite scene it would have to be when the Dude is driving his car smoking a doobie, chugging a beer, and thumping his hand on the roof of the car to the beat of a loud song. He's as happy a butchers pup. Until he drops his fag into his lap and ends up crashing his car.

A simple, non plot related scene, that had me roaring.
