Anyone know how to get the dolphin GameCube one to actually play games? I have it on my internal HDD but when I try play any game it's just a blank screen. Does the game also need to be on the HDD? Is there an easy way to send games straight from my laptop to my Xbox?

I have the dolphin stand alone emulator from the above link.  The games are on an external hard drive.  They play fine in Retroarch.  On the stand alone the game works great but the controller isn't recognised.  Pressing in a stick gives me an options page and I can select options...  So it shows the controller is working and connected but I can't press start to actually play.  All I can do is watch the intro screen looping around.  No idea how to fix that.

Install this app on the Xbox

Spoiler

Then install filezilla or other FTP program on your laptop and you will be able to transfer files between the machines if they're on the same network.

I can't recall the file layout on the Xbox though. You'll have to google what location to transfer the files to.

I have a 2gb external hard drive.  All my games on all formats are on there.  Also bios files etc which you have to point the emulator to look in the right place.  I'm not risking my expensive SSD hard drive space in the Xbox itself, as you can't be sure that you won't fill your harddrive with junk remnants etc.

I still don't understand how Gamr13 does this.   This private individual has the ability to let me install stuff on my unmodded Xbox, and I'm not using Dev mode etc.  So how come he's the only one doing it? Why isn't the Xbox flooded with people sticking their games on Xbox?

Please can someone tell me the exact bios(es) I need for PS2?

Will set up XBSX2 later and that’s been the first stumbling block.

Just Google PS2 bios and put them in a folder with your game isos.  Then in the emulators settings tell it which directory you put them in.

I’m actually giving this a decent amount of my time to set up properly (previously I just dumped a massive batch of ROMs into RetroArch and barely played anything properly) and the videos and available content for the likes of XBSX2 and Dolphin has blown me away. So excited to have RetroPass setup to use those two + Flycast, with all the settings, cheat files and HD texture packs.

That Archades Games YouTube channel is a goldmine, as is the Xbox Emulation Hub Discord.

Seems they’re migrating some of the discord content to a forum in the new year, presumably to monetise it (don’t blame them) so hopefully that takes off. Would be good to get the GBA Temp and Dolphin forums content in one place as a, er, emulation hub. :D

Yeah they go down fast. Honestly the Patreon starts at £1 and is worth it, even if you just pay a quid, grab the latest downloads and then cancel it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

And no you can’t share Patreon links (not that I would, honest) cos the process is once you’ve “donated,” you DM him your Xbox email address, get whitelisted and then the links work for you.

Purely for emulation, is there any point having a Series X over the Series S?

For example, pushing higher resolution rendering, or the additional RAM and GPU grunt in the X preventing bottlenecks in performance with emulators like Dolphin or XBSX2?

new version of Standalone dolphin emulator is out - now has a proper front page UI as well fully functional menu etc..   also you can now set it and the standalone ps2 emulator to run directly from retropass.   Quick vid showing it up and running

I'm torn between buying an Xbox X or upgrading my pc under my telly. Graphics card will be about 350 or Xbox pre owned for about 400.

I really can't justify either :(

If you have room for a pc under the telly you can emulate pretty much anything, including PS3 and Switch. Xbox emulation is amazing for a retail console but a decent spec PC can do just about anything.

Yeah, I've had the pc under the TV for a while now. It's a nice thing to have. Ryzen 5 3600 and a Nvidia 1050 ti. It runs everything up to PS2 generation at 1080p, but it can't do it at 4k. Also I've bought adapters for the joypads I want to use, snes, n64, PS2 etc.

Comparing Xbox X specs though I've realised that console is a bargain. Looks like 3070 Nvidia performance.

It's probably madness to consider a series X for emulation when I've got a pc. Maybe just looking for an excuse for new hardware.

Good point about the switch and PS3. Those are two consoles I've never owned. Ill try emulating them.

Bear in mind that the Series S/X can't run emulators that lack a DIrect X renderer. That rules out RPCS3, CEMU etc.

The Series consoles cannot run everything at 4K - even the Series X cannot manage this, because the emulation is CPU-heavy so the GPU in the X doesn’t boost performance above the S. For example, on my Series X, XBSX2 (an Xbox-specific build of PCSX2) hits 4K flawlessly with Burnout 3, widescreen, running de-blur hacks. However, it cannot run SSX Tricky at 4K - you have to drop the resolution to 1440p or you get slowdown on some courses, e.g. Snowdream. Outrun 2 still exhibits a lot of slowdown at just 1080p, and swapping from DX12 to DX11 (which sometimes improves performance) doesn't help either. F-Zero GX looks spectacular at 1440p, but the Casino course has proper hitching/pausing (always in the same stretch of track) and occasional crashes to the dash, and that's even after compiling shaders before launching the game and increasing the emulation clock speed. Ridge Racer 2 on PSP has occasional hitches at 4x resolution.

Don't get me wrong, it's fantastic to have the option of running emulation on a current gen console, and PS1 and below seems flawless, and likewise for the PS2 games I've played (Burnout 3, SSX Tricky), but you'll not have *everything* running at 4K, even on a Series X, and you don't have the same range of choice and level of control that you do on PC, particularly when something doesn’t work as expected.

This is exactly the info I was looking for. Thanks. The hardware for the price looks amazing on the series X. So much so I was thinking it might be a better way to emulate. But I'll stick with what I've got for now. Even if I can't run everything at 4k.

I don't think you can beat a PC under the TV, as long as you don't mind the size and also the use of Windows on a 55" TV using a mouse on the sofa.  Consoles are just so much more instant and accessible.  But yes, purely on the basis of quality and breadth of emulation nothing beats a PC.

There's an app for iOS / Android called Unified Remote that allows you to use your phone or tablet as a mouse and keyboard combo. Alternatively, you could just boot straight into Big Picture on Steam, or install the Steam Deck OS that'll run on most common CPU/GPU setups (although I'm not sure if it's been updated recently).
