RIP Peter Alliss

Peter Alliss, legendary golf commentator and national treasure, has died.  Golf coverage will never be the same again.  He was one of the best commentators on any sports, able to elevate a sporting event with his commentary, which was always knowledgable and personable, and often very funny.  He had an ability to treat the golfers like ordinary people, and let the viewer know what was going on in their heads.

The first commentator I can recall bringing a real sense of personality to the sport he was covering. Growing up in the 80s and 90s his soothing voice was the audio equivalent of a comfy old armchair, and noticeably refreshing versus other more straight-laced comms.

Loved his shout outs to local clubs, bridging the gap between hacking amateurs and the absolute best to play the game. Was a pleasure being able to listen to him, could do so for hours and often did.

Godspeed Peter.

Pretty much fixed in my mind along with a much-loved but long passed gran of mine, who used to love watching a bit of snooker/cricket/golf when they were on terrestrial telly at least. Voice of Golf for sure.

I’ve always liked watching golf in the background and his voice has been part of that, soothing and witty - I’m sure he also voiced a PlayStation golf game, Actua golf maybe, and I remember being more blown away by that than football commentary in games at the time.

RIP

Loved the Actua games and his commentary on this is great for the time.
