Outside memorising the pattern of their attacks which is the bare minimum of what you need to do, my tip for the Returnal bosses is to just stop trying to aim at them. The game's auto-aim is incredibly aggressive and provided your cursor is somewhere in their area you'll be hitting them. Focus instead on exactly what they're doing and the pattern of all the shit they're throwing out. Later bosses, specifically the 4th boss just fling out such insane amounts of bullets it's crazy.

To add, re Phrike keep your distance at all times. Remember you can dash through any projectile except purple ones. In later attack phases, he tries to get close and melee you so make sure your dash is ready and not on cool-down when you need to dash away. Try and make sure you’ve got the integrity boost, a large vial and an Astronaut when you go in (although RNGesus didn’t grant me an astronaut on my first 15 runs or so for some reason). The main thing is try not to rush it. I think the sidearm is a pretty good weapon for Phrike first time round.

I have pre-ordered the PC version. That will be this year's only full price* game I buy I think. Sort of considering investing in a Dual Sense as well if the haptic feedback really is that transformative in this...?

*£35 full price, PC style.

I really enjoyed the haptics on this but ymmv.

(I heard the TCGS lads the other day taking about how no game has used it since astrobot which I thought was odd as I notice it in almost all the games I play)

I think it is. I haven’t played it without a dual sense but it’s the best implementation of it so far, especially the half press trigger stuff (the trigger ‘stops’ halfway down for targeting buy push it all the way down to fire. It uses trigger resistance to make this very intuitive), plus all the whirring and clicking ‘sounds’ you feel through the controller make it all feel very alien.

Returnal is in my mind not just one of the best games of the generation but one of the best games ever and I love it to tiny little bits.

This is not a lie.

It is an astonishingly good game and, thanks to the incredible endless DLC, remains my default, go to, PS5 game nearly two years after it was first inserted into the disc drive. The game mechanics and that all important 'feel' are absolutley perfect and remain as addictive as hell.

I cannot think of a single thing about it that comes anywhere close to being a negative but, despite that, am now thinking about double dipping with the PC version just because proper 4k at 60fps+,  and maybe some fancy dan RT, would be nice but I'll wait on reviews in case they botch it.

And, yes, PC people, a Dual Sense will add to the enjoyment.

This makes me happy as I still haven't beaten Phrike and whilst I love what I have seen of the game cannot understand the praise it gets.  Time to give it another go!

You will do it, and the game really opens up after that. I breezed to the second boss straight away (haven't beat him yet but got close). For Phrike, i had a health vial and an Astronaut, i wouldnt have done it without them> Thankfully after you beat Phrike, you dont need to beat him again to get back to the second level :)

Oh, and if you haven't already, set the auto aim to high, reticule to the biggest setting, and auto run to on. Helped me massively.

As it tuned out I got the Astronaught on my run last night which helped me get Prike down to his last bar.  I also set auto aim to high but will cretainly change the other settings and auto run sounds like a game changer!

Will give it another try tonight.

Dumb question - but have you set yourself to always sprint? There's literally never any reason to not be going at full tilt in the game, and the always-on sprinting will definitely help.

Does this ever pop-up in a PSN sale? It still seems to be £69.99 digitally on PS5. I mean, I love the game, but that is still ridiculous.

It's been on sale a few times, including earlier this month for £35. It's also included in the Extra tier of PlayStation Plus, which itself has been discounted recently.

Quoted for truth. This is not a cover shooter, you should be sprinting around as if you were doing the ‘Team America’ wavy hands all the time.

  • 3 weeks later...

This is out on PC today. I've bought it again, even though I very rarely double dip from next-gen consoles to the PC, especially when the Playstation performance was so good.

On the offchance anyone hasn't played this because they never got a PS5, I can't recommend picking it up enough.

I pre-ordered it, but alas, CD Keys are not being forthcoming with the code yet. Hopefully it's a good PC port (lol), as I'm going in knowing next to nothing about it.

EDIT ah unlocks in 4 hours

I got to review it again on PC for RPS, and I'd say it's a great port as long as you've got a powerful enough machine. Mine pretty much matches the recommended specs (RTX 2070) and managed a fairly steady 60fps at 1080 on High settings. You don't want to go lower than that, though. because it drops down in quality quite noticeably if you play on Medium, and it's the sort of game that really benefits from having everything turned up to Epic with as many bells and whistles on as possible.

Fucks sake. Crashes to desktop with no warning constantly. Benchmark runs in Epic at 60fps.

Had a similar issue with Dead Space. Had to run in Nvidia debug mode to play that.

Could my card be a bit fucked?

It's certainly not normal. I don't think I have ever had to use debug mode. If it makes it work then that would indicate that either the factory overclock or software defined one (using Afterburner for example) is making the card unstable. I would get onto whoever is responsible for the warranty.

Well, this is just as much fun as it was back on the PS5. First proper run (not the tutorial one) and I've got the two bosses down. I'm screwed now because I'm off to bed and when I come back I'll have no idea what I'm doing.

I played this on psplus and then went out and bought a physical copy, despite having nearly a year of plus extra remaining, just because it is so clearly a masterpiece that will be getting replayed for years and I don’t want to be dependent on a subscription to have access to it. I didn’t want the game to be associated with the subscription in my mind when I’m playing it ;)
