TLDR: See poll (I wanted to add a third "neither" option but I only got 2 boxes).

As I live somewhere where the next gen consoles are even harder to find than they are in the UK, while you're playing your next gen console, I've been spending my Christmas at work pondering the next gen hype and what the point of it all is ;)

I must admit I find this generation upgrade more confusing than previous ones. The main selling point of the newer consoles seems to be 4k. I've seen 4k monitors in some shops and wasn't massively impressed, but I suspect they may not have even been showing a 4k source. Some of the really high end 70 inch 4K OLED TVs in shops showing videos of the night sky/a waterfall etc are impressive, but maybe they would be on a 1080p OLED too and I can't afford those tvs anyway. I mainly game on a 24 inch monitor.

Next there's framerate. Apparently 60fps is low now and 120fps is the big deal for gamers but it's a similar situation to the 4k stuff for me.

Then there's PC where you can choose 4k at 60fps if you have a beast of a machine or 1440p 144hz. Or 1440p 60fps. PC gaming seems to make a bigger deal of above-60 fps gaming than the next gen consoles but how important is it really?

The console shortages have me considering an rtx3070 but I don't have anywhere to experience 4k or high frame rate gaming without actually splashing out on a new setup and monitor.

Is it REALLY worth the money to upgrade my current PC that can run everything I've tried at 1080p 60fps and if so, which balance of framerate/resolution do you personally find to be the sweet spot for gaming?

I didn’t care about 60fps until I moved my Destiny character from (base) PS4 to Steam and quickly noticed how much smoother it felt. Admittedly I haven’t jumped to 4K yet, but I feel like visual improvements become less notable with each generation, whereas 30 vs 60 will always stand out...

The most impressive feature is the SSD.

Loading times actually do seem to be what most of the hype amongst next gen console owners is about.

I have an ssd in my pc (I know ps5 etc ssd is more impressive) but to be honest the difference I've experienced in load times vs ps4 doesn't really mean much to me, so it's just a minor "nice to have" vs a killer feature. I haven't been particularly bothered by load times since the c64.

I definitely agree that 30fps vs 60fps is massive, it's everything above 60fps I'm not sold on (and don't really have any way to experience without splashing out on a fancy new setup).

Backwards compatibility and the quality of life improvements the new machines give to older games is a big one for me. Not that I've picked up the new consoles yet, but it's such a fundamentally important part of my PC gaming life that it's great to see the steps MS have taken in the previous gen really get improved upon for their Series machines. Sony are kind of muddling through it in comparison, but I'm sure it'll all work out fine there too.

60fps by some distance, and I have the perfect example.

Monster Hunter World on the Series S is 60fps but apparently the textures are low quality and the resolution low (relatively speaking). I didn't notice this at all, whereas playing at 60fps instead of 25-30fps is like moving from playing in treacle to playing in butter.

Loading times improving are a big boon but they rarely bothered me that much in the past.

Playing Miles Morales on PS5 quality mode 30: hey, looks nice. But then I switched to performance and it was OH MY FUCKING GOD IT'S MELTING MY EYEBALLS IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL! Performance mode in Miles Morales on a LG CX OLED looked the most next gen of all the launch titles across both formats. Incredible.

Ray tracing looked okay in static screenshots but added so little in motion imho, especially compared to how fluid and solid the game looks at 60.

Your screen/panel is more important than anything else these days.

Going from an LCD telly to an OLED (yawn) has been the most impressive and significant factor for me since the jump to full HD with the PS3/360.

PS4 on an OLED looks better than PS5 on an LCD.

Miles Morales, I actually preferred at 30fps. I thought the added motion blur at 30fps made it look more cinematic than the sort of hyper real look of 60fps. I think it also has really low input lag, so felt fine to play.

But that seems to be the exception to the rule. I’ve put Immortas Fenyx Rising down to 1080p60 instead of 1440p30 because I find the latter feels horrible to play. Even at 1080p, I don’t feel like my Series S is a lesser console than the PS5, even if the resolution difference is massive. It feels just as fast and responsive (because of the SSD) and games run at 60fps, because of the CPU.

I’m playing on an OLED and would probably say the SSD is a must have, 60fps should become standard and everything else (increasing resolutions, frame rates and added RT) is a nice bonus.

I’ve switched between 60fps and 120fps lots and can barely tell the difference.

But on the original question, I agree with @HarryBizzle that it does somewhat depend on the game, but by and large, I'd take 60fps for almost anything over the extra resolution. For gaming, I can't tell the difference between 1440p and 4K and I sit 2m from the telly. HDR is more significant, although plenty of games still bork that.

In addition to load times, the other big thing that people have hyped about the console SSDs is the potential for them to affect gameplay mechanics. Since you can guarantee that every PS5 player will have an SSD, you can make it an essential part of the design in a way that you can't with PC SSDs.

I think the most prominent example of this so far was the trailer for the next Ratchet & Clank, with its instantaneous warping to completely different environments through portals. But has anything actually been released yet that features the SSDs in a way that could never have been done before, rather than just for snappy loading times?

Also agreed on a good LG OLED making a huge difference outside of the consoles themselves. Played my PS5 on a 1080p LCD for a few days, then the CX arrived and I was astonished at how much better it looked. As I excitedly said to my like-minded friends: "it's like my PS5 is suddenly a PS6! WTF!"

Missus Gerbik couldn't care less about games or fancy tech. Going from SD to HD didn't impress her at all, she saw a difference but "meh". But seeing the CX in action she literally said "oh my god" and has been telling all her friends how incredible the new telly is. She even recommended it to her parents, who are even less interested in tech than she is. A few minutes into the demonstration, my father in law turns to me and wanted to know how much it costs, does it come in other sizes.

It's a bit steep but worth saving up for. The SSD in combination with how these consoles look on the LG OLED, are the biggest and most impressive improvements. On the other hand, whether a game is 1440p or native 4k makes little difference for the overall visual quality, nowhere near as much as the difference between 30fps and 60fps. IMHO of course.

The only next gen feature I’m interested in is uploading faces in FPS, like we were going to get with Perfect Dark and the Gameboy Camera - would be a snap with today’s connected consoles.

Ever played Rainbow Six Vegas on the 360? You could use the Uno camera to do exactly that. It was hilarious playing co-op with friends and their real life mugs actually staring you in the face. Always thought it a shame that this hilarious feature disappeared.

No! I would have loved that.

Agree with the general consensus that it goes SSD -> 60 FPS -> 4K.

The load times for games are now so short I can't imagine ever going back to an older disc based console. Being able to fast travel across the map in an open world game in about 3 seconds instead of 30 is practically worth the price of admission on its own.

I was never really a stickler for frame rates and was always perfectly happy with 30fps but now that basically everything I've played on next-gen has been 60 I'm a bit worried it's spoiled me. Switching between 60 and 30 in these games is so tough and whatever resolution or graphical differences there are in the 30fps modes they're definitely not worth the trade-off of the screen looking like a sluggish slideshow in comparison. I never thought that about 30 fps in prior gens but it really is tough to go back once your eyes are used to 60.

4K is whatever. If games can run at 1440p or thereabouts they look totally fine on a 4K TV. 1080p they can look a little soft but 1080/60fps is still better than 4K/30fps.

60fps is the most important for me. I don’t care too much about frame rates above that as I don’t have a 120hz telly.

I don’t have a 4K telly either so resolutions above that aren’t too important anyway. Also my eyes are shit end I can’t see the difference unless I sit right up against the screen.

One thing I wish devs would do is include the option for larger fonts on every game. It’s ridiculous that not all games have this as standard.
