My two word review from the thread: Aggressively tedious. Avoid.

Looking through my gaming backlog I decided to play Guardians of the Galaxy, it follows the Telltale formula with a good story and decent voice-acting. Has the Guardians sense of humour but the gameplay is the usual push left/right & button presses. I've finsihed with the current season of Fortnite so it's lots of Fifa 22 & an indie puzzler called Islanders in which you get a random island and a points target to place buildings before progressing onto the next.

7/9 - Metroid Fusion

23/9 - Castlevania Symphony of the Night

24/10 - Metroid Dread

After playing the mainline Metroid games over the past year it was nice to finally have a new game to play from launch. I really enjoyed it but i did find it frustrating at times, especially the boss fights - but it was satisfying to beat them eventually. I'll probably replay it again in the future!

18/11 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Second time i've played this (must have been about 5 years ago since i last played) and i still really enjoyed this. The dungeons are somewhat on the easy side but it does make it up with a lot of charm and decent boss fights. Nice to get back into the worlds of LTTP as well especially as I had forgot a lot of the game!

23/11 - The Dark Anthology - House of Ashes

First one of these i have played (excluding Until Dawn) and i thought it was a decent game with some amazing graphics (it looks so real at times!). However the beggining is somewhat a bit of a slog to get through. It's a good 90 minutes before you really have much control over the characters and maybe a few hours before the story really get's good. Treat it as a movie and you will be more impressed.

Far Cry 5

I bloody loved this I did. Let's get the crappy bits out of the way first.

1) The droning cultists bad guys became tedious pretty quickly. It didn't help that their proselytizing music offended the ears in every base and outpost. A clever idea on paper, no doubt, but it grated beyond belief after a few hours.

2) Whomever decided to integrate a key design feature that 'captured' the player and imprisoned them several times over in a free-roaming sandbox game needs to be put back into the QA dept and strapped into a chair.

Despite these missteps this was marvellous fun. The Prepper stashes were terrific, the vehicles and gunplay excellent and the variety was better than in previous outings. While I loved the atmosphere and systems of Far Cry 2 I never actually got over the line with it (going back to it more recently it does suffer from control issues that we were willing to forgive back in the day). Similarly with 3 and 4 the first few outposts were terrific then the Ubislog set in.

But I got to the end with this and had a blast.

I've been saying for a long time that too many open-world games suffer from a lack of unique locales and hidden crannies that motivate exploration (I'm staring at you Just Cause series) but this nailed it. All those little caves, underground bunkers and eyries, each with loot, lore and stashes to raid made the world feel alive.

Sure, the narrative was poor (I couldn't tell you the main character's name and didn't care) but with so much fun stuff to do it didn't spoil the enjoyment.

I also preferred the way this was compartmentalised into 3 regions and any mission or attack on the enemy fed into the progression there. It curtailed a lot of the grind I'd felt in previous outings.

I may even go back to get some of those final challenges. Never did quite get the hang of fishing or wingsuiting.

Terrific stuff.

8/10

It's not without it's jankiness (due to age mostly), but I still fucking loved it. Apart from having to redo the 70 Man Battle three times. On to Shenmue II and maybe I can unwrap my copy of Shenmue III some time within the next decade. :D

30. Forza Horizon 5 (2021) - Xbox Series X via Game Pass

Obviously I haven't properly finished this as it's an endless game, but, after reaching level 165, winning every race, completing every PR stunt and finding all the collectibles in the 50-odd hours I've spent glued to this over the past few weeks, I feel like I've played enough to call time on it for now.

In summary, it's the most enjoyable racing game I've played since Mario Kart 8, but it's got some of the worst onboarding I've ever experienced in a game: for the first five hours you are constantly plagued with pop ups and notifications about things you don't understand, and which the game doesn't teach you about. If you can muscle through that, however, and essentially teach yourself how to play the game by looking at guides, videos and forums online, you'll be rewarded with an extremely compelling and diverse racer that feels and looks fantastic. The variety on offer, whether that's cars, race types or locations, is what makes it. Initially I was a bit dubious, thinking the game was somewhat structureless and unfocused, but when you realise that the way you play the game is entirely up to you (and once you've made effective use of the map filters), things definitely start to click into place and the game becomes an obsession. I got fed up with Horizon 4 when I played it for the first time last year because of how it constantly pelted you with information, but I'm glad I stuck it out this time around.

I've had a wonderful time with this, and I'll definitely be back for more once the DLC expansions are out. It's a shame that the online elements seem a little borked, otherwise I'd have enough of an incentive to stick around for a bit longer. And I know it's been said already, but the fact that a game with this production values is 'free' on Game Pass is pretty damn sweet.

Excellent. If you have GP and you aren't playing it then what are you even doing?

30/11 Haven (PC) Here's a game that's been done a disservice by its demo. A vertical slice that pushed together the gliding and the intrusive turn based battles which gave the impression that these battles would constantly interrupt. They don't (especially when set to a lower difficulty.) A sci fi romance You control Yu and Kay, two lovers who have fled from their homeworld and the arranged marriages that were their fate. You explore a broken planet and clean it up while you look for spare parts to repair The Nest, your spaceship / caravan. It's charming but due to a few design decisions I didn't get lost in their story but felt very much like an outsider looking in. Especially in the visual novel loop of the game in The Nest where you explore it first person while they hang around in various parts of the ship. Made me feel a bit like the flatmate that never talks in The Young Ones. The turn based combat is OK but it's skating around the French comic inspired alien planet which is the real drawcard. Your mileage will vary on whether you find eavesdropping on Yu and Kay's love life cute or off putting.

I've been playing this at request of my youngest, who we bought the game for and instead has watched most of the game on YouTube. It's been a lot of fun - there's a lot of great ideas and getting to a new floor for the first time is always brilliant and other than the controls being a bit of a struggle at times, it's been a blast just churning through it and squishing some ghosts on the floor. Luigi is full of personality and great fun to watch and some of the puzzles are great to figure out.

Suspect I'm going to be, uh, required to go back and collect a bunch of the gems/find the hidden boos/etc though.

Doing that two games in one day thing again.

Crimzon Clover is another indie vertical shmup that doesn't feel indie at all until you see the credit roll and it looks like the Sega Saturn hi-res mode. It's an absolute riot of colour and explosions and medals and my high score is in the several hundred billions becuase why not. Struggled a little initially, as I kept dying to things I hadn't seen; I'm not sure what conscious decisions I'd taken to improve but I went from feeling like I was losing lives in an "unfair" fashion to feeling like every time I died it was because I'd done something stupid and totally deserved it.

Don't be too swayed by the "Novice" tag, this gets pretty tricky towards the end and the other difficulty - "Arcade" is hilariously difficult in that I think I'm genuinely too old to process the information fast enough at this point.

It has a fun scoring system that took a while to get used to, as well - your weapons are split between a regular shot which is not quite powerful enough but mostly gets the job done, and a homing laser which locks on to more targets the longer you charge it, up to a capped number of targets. These are also quite powerful so you want to use them a lot to make sure you don't die. The cool bit comes with the multipler bonuses, which are applied when you destroy something wtih your homing laser and also hit a lot of targets; this leads to a great risk/reward gameplay where if you want to score high, you want to stop shooting your regular shot in order to maximise the number of targets you're getting with the laser, but also doing this means you're Not Killing Things so there are more bullets to avoid/ships flying around you/etc.

If all this wasn't enough, as you kill stuff you charge your Break Gauge; when you Break, all bullets on screen turn in to big shiny things to collect, your main shot powers up, and you can lock on to more things at once (and faster).

Oh and you can enter Double Break Mode if you charge up enough gauge which is even more ridiculous and there are ludicrous score multipliers and everything melts and oh my god it's like pure dopamine going into your eyeballs for ten solid seconds

Anyway. It's dead good. Super good. Both this and Blue Revolver have been magnificent and I'm just hoping I've not accidentally played two of the best indie shmups available and everything else is going to feel a bit shit now.

Final boss spoilers:

Spoiler

There's a final boss at the end of stage 5. If you beat him, you reach the True Last Boss, which I got hammered by the first time, and gave myself another credit just to learn the patterns a bit.

What I didn't realise is, going into the final boss with five lives in tow, the True Last Boss also has a second phase and it can absolutely fuck off doing things like that. I was able to take it down first time but I may have woken the family up by making incomprehensible noises when it appeared

Anyway. It's dead good. Super good. Both this and Blue Revolver have been magnificent and I'm just hoping I've not accidentally played two of the best indie shmups available and everything else is going to feel a bit shit now.

 They are great, but don't worry, plenty of godly indie shmups to get through yet.

If you want somewhere to go next, Blue Wish Desire just came out. Easily the best game of the year - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1794300/BLUE_WISH_DESIRE/

05/12/21 - Guardians of the Galaxy

Unlike everyone who thought this was going to be shit from the moment it was revealed, I had faith! And pretty much said here I think that it was one of my highlights of E3. It's nice to be vindicated. ;)

I like the characters (even Star Lord who some people seemed to despise), the story is excellent and even the combat was good, albeit during that last couple of chapters went on for far too long. It is a little buggy though and I had to restart checkpoints a couple of times because the game glitched out on me. And also characters getting stuck behind objects. It could've used a couple of months more to iron things out. But other than that......it's no Spider-Man, but happily sits alongside it. Hopefully Square Enix get the developers to make more in the Marvel Universe. Though this being a western developers, they'll probably blame them for not selling 100 million units or something.

Cyber Shadow (Switch)

I've been waiting since launch for this in a sale and I was amply rewarded. Hard 2D platformers do it for me for some reason and I knew within minutes of trying it on GamePass at launch that I would love it on Switch and it was very much so. Incredible soundtrack, perfect controls, plenty of content and even the hardest of all game design boxes to tick - enjoyable boss fights! I expected good, I got a strong GOTY contender. Lovely.

Also I'm pleased it gave this stat at the end. That's well under two minutes for the average life

I think I own this on three different platforms and paid about 80p for the lot. It's such a shame this wound up being deeply discounted and given away so quickly as it's a lovely and charming platformer about a monster that kicks the shit out of everything with its elasticated legs, and helps overthrow an evil robot corporation. It's just the right amount of stupid, really well written and there's a few fun puzzles in there too.

Number of games in the series: 3

Number of player-led decisions in the series: 0 (assuming you don't view clicking "start" a player-led decision)

This final episode wraps up the story nicely in a mixture of talking too much about theoretical financial products and the main character being intensely dislikable on occasion. In reality it's a completely preposterous love story wrapped up in billions of fictional currency units. On the moon. Despite misgivings about the protagonist, I found it really compelling. It's more like an airport book or a short anime series than a game really, though the soundtrack does as much to set the stage as the visuals.

Sadly the wrap-up bits at the end are over too quickly, which is a shame as the amount of time that some points are deliberated upon is huge, and then the things I really wanted to see play out at the end were literally reduced to a slideshow during the credits. A shame but I still enjoyed my time with these, uh, games

Forty games this year. That's more thanI've completed  in the last decade I think

40. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (XSX)
A linear, single-player narrative game with no MTX or GaaS elements in 2021. Crazy, yet a breath of fresh air which – almost – rinses out the bad taste left by the tedious Avenger's game.

An excellent script, jokes that are actually funny, some touching emotional moments, breathtaking visuals and a killer soundtrack push what could have been an average game into the very enjoyable category. I got really bored of the combat around the half way point, but they have included a fantastic array of options to balance this how suits you best.

I would play it again if I could skip all the combat to see how the alternate decisions play out, but unfortunately that's not an option, so I'll move on to the next shiny thing (Halo! The Gunk!). Recommended.

I've been playing this on and off for years. You'll have seen this game before - you stand in the middle of the screen and _baddies_ run at you from both sides, and you must attack in the right direction at the right time. Only, it's polished and distilled and perfected in such a fashion that means that it can run at rocket speed, have twenty enemies on screen at once, and you can still decipher exactly what is going on and what actions you need to take.

The original one was brilliant on XBox Live Indie Games and somehow this is even better, and there is just SO much game here. I've run through from the start to the end and there are still two areas I've not even touched, a bunch of bonus content (including a level which announces itself as "super unfair") and a full survival mode, post-game stuff... it's unbelievably satisfying, just the right amount of challenge (I had to use a Revenge Token, which regenerates your health, during the last level only) and I'll definitely be back for more in short bursts for a good while yet.

07/12/2021 - The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan (PC)

I normally enjoy writing about the games I play - and I've put some in the dedicated thread for it - but I really didn't like this and don't feel there's much I want to say about it. Until Dawn was a great concept, with an interesting story and some really well-written characters. This had a terrible 'story' (I put that in ' ' marks because there's barely any plot at all), characters that lacked any charm and a setting that was as dull as could be. The game did nothing to change the formula of Until Dawn, either, so there's was no feeling of pushing the genre forward. Just an all-around waste of my time.

Picked this up when sifting through a Switch sale not that long ago and is the first thing I've really put much time into on the OLED Switch. it looks really nice in its minimal design and the soundtrack is by far the highlight of the whole package, it just bubbles away in the background and is absolutely superb.

The game follows a circle with a big chunk missing (Definitely Not Pac-Man) as it traverses the world looking to make itself complete. You meet other characters who can fit in the missing space and then you go on a platforming journey together. The platforming is usually pretty decent, as each different piece gives you new abilities and a bunch of stages designed around the skillset, though there are a couple of places that are extremely frustrating due to the controls being just a little bit wonky (deliberately) and one area where you might just randomly run into some underwater plants that instantly kill you, which the game would just be better without.

The story is extremely on the nose at points (the developers are not native English speakers so maybe that has something to do with it, or maybe it's that it is extremely difficult to write about the feelings of a circle with existential anxiety and make it sound natural) and didn't quite land for me, but there are times where it's nailed and is really impactful.

There's also some bonus levels at the end, one of which is

Spoiler

an homage to Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy

...I didn't finish that bonus level (too frustrating for me) but it made me smile a lot.

8/12/21 Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita)

A bout of Covid sent me back to the Vita to play this classic for the first time, and it quickly became a bit of an obsession. It's a perfect fit for the hardware, and still really stands up almost 10 years after release. I got the true ending (by using an FAQ) and my word what an ending it is - probably another 10 hours of game. I never really got to grips properly with the Persona fusing, but the story was great fun and I enjoyed most of the dungeon combat with the exception of some of the boss battles. It's never fun getting one shotted after 15 minutes of grinding away at a boss health bar. Still, I'd highly recommend this one.

I should also finally finish Soma, and that will be it for 2021. I've finished some sensational games this year and I think Death Stranding was the best of all of them.

37.) Doom 3 - Switch - 2019 (2004)
Aka. "Doom: BFG Edition - Switch Version". Completed just the Doom 3 compaign on default Marine difficulty (approx. 15 hours).

I've been mostly enjoying playing all the old Doom games up until now, but Doom 3 is a bit of a slog. I don't handle scary games well at the best of times, but Doom 3 on the Switch is a hard game to control, its aiming sensitivity never feels quite right for the little analogue sticks, and weirdly the game doesn't have any gyro aiming to help, which the other Doom games do. Now that you have to aim up and down, move in and out of cover and reload your weapon, it's not actually that much fun anymore. This is an entirely different type of game from its predecessors, a slow-paced survival horror where you rarely fight more than one or two monsters at a time and where noises and voice recordings fill in the downtime with a sense of dread. Its scares come in the form of jumps and ambushes, usually from hidden rooms or from demons teleporting behind you, and these quickly get predictable. The original version of this game had an interesting mechanic where you couldn't use the torch and a gun at the same time, which was absolute bollocks and terribly unpopular but at least it was interesting. Now you can use the torch at any time, but you have to turn it off every twenty seconds to charge it up, and given how dark the game is, you basically just stop and wait, then carry on - it's pointless. Unlike the previous games, the combat is not much fun; this is no Halo, that's for sure. I kept accidentally crouching, scrolling to the wrong weapon, getting stuck on scenery when trying to avoid attacks, and the way the screen shakes whenever you're hit is just plain irritating. It's from an era of FPSs where the most dangerous enemies were often ladders, and yet it does look ridiculously good still. I remember this being the game to get a new PC for (in fact, I think I did!). There was nothing else doing visuals like Doom 3 at the time; all that dynamic lighting, shadows, bump-mapping and specular shinies. I know it's made of cramped corridors and entirely scripted encounters, but this game was pretty phenomenal back in 2004, wasn't it? Visually, anyway. I didn't like actually playing it much back then, either. In fact, this is the first time I've finished it and I don't want to ever play it again. It is indeed a one-way ticket to Hell (and back).

I have no desire to play the Resurrection of Evil expansion either, and to be honest I'm pretty done with Doom games for now. Maybe I'll come back and give the two new ones a go... but not on the Switch.

21/12 The Gunk (PC) I've always been a little worried when teams that have worked on 2D games make the leap to 3D. Most seem to not be able to make the jump with the games either being ugly or clumsy, usually both. Image and Form (previously creators of the Steamworld games) have made stuck the landing with this lovely (albeit short) action adventure that feels like a Double Fine game. You play as Rani who along with her partner Beck appear to be down at heel space scangers. You find a planet which looks promising but it's also infected with The Gunk, a sort of blobby mass. Using your artificial arm you mostly clean up gunk by using your arm as a vacuum cleaner and manipulating objects and solving simple puzzles. It's one of the best looking games I've played this year with the entire thing looking like a very high quality claymation animation. The writing is good, the mechanics are solid and it ends before it gets tiresome. And this is the great thing about GamePass, it creates space for these short experiences to exist. Highly recommended for a lazy afternoon, for the most part it's got a very chill vibe to it.

12/12 The Procession to Calvary (PC) A point and click game done in the style of Terry Gilliam animations. The Holy War is over and your superiors tell you to stand down. "No more murders!" "This is the worst day of my life!" laments the knight you play as until she meets with Immortal John and takes some of what he's saying as an excuse to nip down south and take Peter's head. It's all very silly and there's a wrong way of playing this that will wrap up the game in half an hour (missing a lot of the content) which is still a laugh. I enjoyed this a lot and felt compelled to unlock allthe endings and the achievements only referring to a walkthrough twice. It's on Gamepass so there's no excuse not to try this.

12/10 The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan (PC)

528675-the-dark-pictures-anthology-man-o

I'm not into long form gory horror so I bounced off Until Dawn. But short form anthology horror is something I've always loved and so I gave this a shot before it disappeared from gamepass. On the off it looks astonishing , much better than The Medium which gathered a lot of attention earlier in the year. I almost bounced off this at first as I didn't like any of the characters but the narrator as the framing device kept me hooked. I didn't like the last third of the game which seemed to rely a lot on QTE's which changed it more from a Telltale like game to Dragon's Lair but overall enjoyed my time with it. If any more of these hit gamepass I'll probably play them. In then end almost all my crew survived

apart from Conrad who failed a QTE and got impaled by a pipe.

Third Castlevania game i've played and i enjoyed this quite a bit. Some of the bosses were tough but overall easier than Castlevania IV. Might play it again as the other character sometime.

30/11 - Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Been a while since i completed this, didn't manage to get all the emeralds due to Tails being an absolute dick in the special stages and loses all my rings. I should have turned him off.

9/12 - Mega Man X

Funny game this! Some levels I beat without losing a life whilst other levels were as hard as nails. Sorry, i lie - the levels are not that bad but the bosses are a right pain. Didn't realise i could refill from energy tanks till the final boss though! Overall a fun game which could have benefited from a battery save and maybe a bit more work to get rid of that lag during the game as it is horrible!!

Dangerous Driving

This is very good and an impressive achievement for such a small team. On the downside it has a very narrow focus and lacks that final polish you'd get from one of the big publishers, but what it does, it does superbly well. That feeling of speed and the sheer seatofthepants terror as you powerslide around a corner, hoping against all hope that there's not an unavoidable truck in the oncoming lane is a thrill rarely experienced in driving games these days.

But by the 4th event class repetition inevitably sets in. Still, I'm sure I'll go back to it from time to time because there's nothing quite like it.

Halo Infinite - This high-profile game took six years to develop, came out delayed, buggy, and missing multiple features, but still has really fun core gameplay loop and a polished campaign. Wait, that sounds like Cyberpunk 2077, which the internet told me is the worst thing ever! Ah, but this a long running franchise that people have nostalgia for, so it's actually brilliant, apparently.

8bHAI30.jpg

While I enjoyed grappling around the world and getting into scraps early on, the lack of variety soon becomes fatiguing - there's only one faction of enemies, only one environment type, copy+paste assets everywhere in the open world, even copy+paste bosses. Jason Schreiers piece says they cut 2/3rds of the game, and I'm interested to know if that included more varied content or just the current amount spread even thinner - if it was the latter they made a good choice.

It's also very unambitious, even dated-feeling in some respects - the FOBs and open-world systems are incredibly barebones, the outposts involve blowing up fuel containers like in Just Cause 2, the world is completely static, people compared the design to Crysis, but that at least had destruction a decade and a half ago, here saplings are like concrete bollards to your Warthog. There's none of the massive dynamic Scarab battles from Halo 3 here, the increased scale isn't really put to use, and the Banished war machine is 90% explosive barrel. Combined with the underwhelming graphics this feels like a cross-gen title from the 360 era, rather than a generation later, and without the brand name it probably wouldn't have set the world on fire then either.

Story wise, you definitely feel that 2/3rds cut, but I'll keep the spoilers in the box below:

Spoiler

At the 90% mark it actually starts filling in the status quo of the beginning, and at that point I thought to myself, "what was driving the plot before this then?", and I couldn't even remember, distress signals? Unlocking FOBs? The first half of the game is weirdly aimless, and the failure to establish anything before the penultimate dungeon just leaves you wandering about confused for most of the game.

And that ending, so abrupt, like if Halo CE ended when Guilty Spark warped you away, it's clearly missing the introduction of the second faction. As the credits rolled I was left with the feeling that nothing much had happened - we get some exposition on what happened offscreen between Halo 5 and the start of this game, but the main character knew all that because he was there and could have just told the pilot, the uninformed audience surrogate, at any point. It's all just constructing a mystery for the player, rather than anything that actually informs the characters - a bizarre choice. A lot of time is spent developing the relationship with nu-Cortana, I guess, the Pilot barely figures into the plot considering how prominent he was in the marketing, I get what they were going for with both but none of it really worked for me.

The Banished writing as mentioned, is infantile, everyone is just one-dimensional balls of rage, all the audio logs are just about them loving torture and being cartoonishly evil, Saturday morning cartoons for actual toddlers have more nuanced villains at this point. And then Chief goes "he was a good lad" about the head cannibalistic fascist warmonger, while the rest of the game is holding Chief up as the best of humanity, this is what you get when you just write entirely in tropes, like a hack.

What's amusing too is that it's clear they were changing the story during the delay, the weren't going to have the baddy from Halo Wars 2 in it, he was going to be dead offscreen, but then fans asked where he was and they clearly hastily commissioned this dodgy CG trailer at the start, because they previously said the Pilot cutscene was the very first cutscene. No one refers to Atriox being alive during the non-flashback events and there's are still lines in the game saying he's dead.

Needless to say, I'm not particularly convinced by their writing going forwards, they've just hit a reset button for another Force Awakens, despite Halo 4 already being a Force Awakens, and Force Awakens being shit. Did we really need another ancient evil with flowery language and vague motivations going on about abstract concepts? Did we really need another cliffhanger ending? Fucking time travel?

But I get the feeling fans don't care, they just want their nostalgia series to continue, the fan reaction has changed with this one - 343 seem to have struck a bargain that they'll stop making the games look like plastic Bayformers and stop the Spartans from wallrunning and the userbase will be happy with their lot as a declining B-tier franchise.

TL;DR: Honestly, Halo Infinite is OK, neither a disaster or a triumph, a 6/10 title that won't trouble any but the longterm fans GOTY lists, the shift to the open world mixes up the gameplay, but doesn't really fix any of the series long running problems. The dated engine, development troubles and incomprehensible writing are still all here, all still an issue going forwards.

The multiplayer I actually really enjoy and have put 50 hours into, I'd probably give a 8/10, but even that's kind of hard to recommend due to the state the game has launched in, before the campaign had launched it had lost 2/3rds of its players in three weeks, and there's no new content until May.
