It’s the one vote 10 pointers that intrigue me most; 27 people (including myself) with a personal album of the year that no one else thought was worthy of a top ten placing.

My first, second and third place albums all only received my vote, not sure what that says about me:lol:

Surely it's more about no-one else actually hearing the things rather than hearing them and judging them unworthy.

There's too much music these days for the results of polls like this to be anything other than completely scattered outside of a handful of albums by bigger artists, especially when there aren't that many people submitting lists. Placements are always going to be decided more by visibility than anything else.

All but two of my nominations were one-vote wonders :D

The Avalanches did well, at least. ^_^

I'm in good company as a one vote wonder (Daniel Avery & Alessandro Cortini - Illusion of Time was my 10 pointer).

As @Rsdio said, the abundance of music makes these lists difficult to compile in a meaningful manner, especially with the small sample size.

Let's face it, when the general public respond to end of year reviews en masse they're usually full of pricks like Sheeran or Robbie Williams so I'll take a carefully curated and unique list any day.

I bought 8 of 10 of my list on physical formats, (yes, I'm old) but will be spotifying a lot of the ones on the list over the next few days.

+1 to everyone who contributed!

Broadly agree but I think there are a few reasons and complexity to this.

There are albums on this list I have heard that I haven't included on a top 10, but may have included on a top 20/30. Having so few choices means tough choices on the latter half, so unless I am incredibly passionate about it, if it's between a critical consensus pick and something else I would probably choose the latter - it's just more interesting to do so and feels more valuable for others. Not only is there is too much music but accessibility to new music is so much easier than ever before. I can quite easily embed a Spotify or YouTube playlist within a post and be listening in seconds, which even in the history of the forum is relatively new. Also agree strongly that the fewer submissions of lists, the more likely a higher number of single vote albums.

I'm personally always quite disappointed when looking from the end of year lists from the likes of Pitchfork/NME/AllMusic the picks are generally same albums different order and given the vast array of releases, makes little sense to me. I suspect it is so they don't get a backlash from readers for not including album X or Y or maybe their listening habits are too defined by what is shoved under their nose for review.

Thanks @ngchol again for pulling this together - the fact I know this is coming every year really forces me to listen to a bunch of things before the end of year vote so the process (as well as the list) always helps me find new things to try!

I don't think I've ever submitted an album voted by anybody else.

Prog is many things, but it's decidedly out of the mainstream. Still, I enjoy inflicting my choices on you all each year and it's interesting to see what is broadly popular here.

That’s the beauty of this list though imo - you get to hear stuff that nowhere else really talks about.

I forgot to vote. But I only really had a top 4 anyway:

1. Spanish Love Songs-

Brave Faces Everyone

2. Taylor Swift - Folklore

3. Tricot - 真っ黒

4. Taylor Swift - Evermore

Will look forward to listening some from the list as always.

I'm working my way through the top 10 (at least) of anything I haven't listened to to see what I've missed , regardless of whether I agree with the placing there's always good stuff in there I haven't heard.

@ngchol you're a  legend for doing this every year.

If you guys like Pheobe Bridgers, you could check out my poor, maligned, and ignored thread about the Youtube movie of covers of Daniel Johnson songs which features a heartbreakingly beautiful version of Peek a boo by her.  It's at 36:21 in the video.

The only thing that didn't make this list that would have made my top 10 is Jim Noir - A.M Jazz, which I discovered courtesy of the Piccadilly Records end of year list. It's a very relaxing, melodic record with shades of The Beta Band, Air and even Feels era Animal Collective in the case of one song.

  • 4 weeks later...

Lying in bed today & realised that for the first time in a long time (maybe ever?) I totally forgot to vote, as I had way too much going on in the tail end of last year so haven’t been here on the forum very much at all.

But as always thanks to @ngchol for compiling this, & to all the voters for the albums. It will give me some stuff to listen to over the coming weeks. Good work all!
