Board gaming expenditure 2021

Add 1 Doom for starting to realise how expensive the Arkham rabbit hole goes.

Thankfully I joined this thread long after starting collecting AH, so I try not to think about how much I've spent on everything that's been release to date.  And how much I'll keep spending, as I love the game to bits.

It’s not so bad now, I figure, as I can spread out the remaining expansion cycles, plus I understand they do reprint those so I don’t need to panic buy anything ( forgotten age box is basically out of stock everywhere so I assume that must be on the way soon-ish ).

And I guess that’s birthday & Christmas covered for the foreseeable too!!

The real rabbit hole is that this could be the start of a ‘board gaming phase’ in general, as I’ve also got Too Many Bones on the way, plus I’ve backed the Marvel United Kickstarter so things could get real expensive, real quick.

Picked up a Cloudspire bundle from eBay for £245 delivered after watching the start of a solo play through on YouTube to get a good idea of how it plays.

Comes with main game, plus the upgrade pack, all expansions, first set of miniatures & the scenario / lore books. The main game has been played a couple of times but all the stuff from the second campaign is still sealed.

As long as it’s all in mint condition, it’s a pretty good price as it would be about 320 to buy it all new from Chip Theory’s website.

Well this has been an expensive month, granted its largely been down to Marvel United X-Men and the things I've been wanting for a while coming back in stock (AFfO Norwegians, New York Zoo and Spirit Island Jagged Earth).

I'm really going to try take a break for a while, feel quite content at the moment and nothing I'm desperate to pick up, only thing on my list that's constantly been out of stock forever is Potion Explosion so I guess if that came back in stock I'd pick that up. Not terribly much on KS I fancy either other than Isle of Cats expansions. I've got a few decisions to make on games I've backed at a dollar (Chai tea for two, My Fathers Work, Eternal Palace and ICE off the top of my head) and a couple pledge managers due, Robinson Crusoe and Canvas Reflections.

I've not included my hotel costs for UKGE but suppose it is a board game expense so wasn't sure if I should or not.

Pictures of the table please. A dedicated games table is on our list but it'll be a while before we're in a position to get it.

Another 4-5 months before it’s delivered, but absolutely will post some.

  • 4 weeks later...

That time of the month again...

It's been an expensive month but a good value for money one.  Best of all, NO NEW KICKSTARTERS.  Being a real creature of habit, this is an important step forward.  Just a couple of pledge managers still to be charged and then that's it (at least for a while).

So this month we have:

Tales of the Arabian Nights £50.  Not sure why I hadn't spotted this in the listings earlier; its not new.  I've crafted some solitaire rules and achievements and, if my initial experience as Sinbad the aggressive sailor, turned envious sex-changed giant ape, is anything to go by, this is a stone-cold classic of the story book genre ( I assume it influenced the likes of Ryan Laukat).

Bargain Quest £33 - probably the worst value for money item because the heavy boards are redundant, but a really cool game.

Destines £39 - this is the app driven Lucky Duck game which has a real Diablo vibe to it, especially in the final scenario.  It replaces the metric of health with time - if you fail a test it sets you back a day versus your competitors.  In solo you can either play with no time pressure, or with a deadline which is far too short for non-experts - it should have an option to select your own deadline.

League of Infamy £67 - this is a dungeon crawler with a difference - the conventional heroes are now villains each trying to stab their team members in the back whilst also leaving with the most loot and highest infamy.  May be played with a DM or with an automated DM.  A bit old school - needs a Player guide.

Mice and Mystics £50 - this month's impulse buy - I know it's got issues, but I do like a strong story so let's have a good look at it.

Chronicles of crime 1900 - £19 - I really like this series.

Imperium Classics - £20 - been playing a lot of Legends, so this just completes the set, with some easier civilisations included.

Total new games £278

KS extras - circa £35

Total for the month - around £313

Next month- hopefully the Robin Hood game arrives, plus Neuroshima Hex anniversary edition.

May ended up not being too crazy board game wise but since I decided to get into painting I've bought a lot of stuff for that to get set up. I'm including it here as it's board game related.

June

Folded Space inserts (Marvel Legendary and Spirit Island Jagged Earth) and 500 sleeves - £44.47 Gameslore
Fort- £13.98 Zatu
Canvas Reflections PM - £14.20
Two paintbrushes - £22.05 Rosemary and Co
Vallejo Paint set and desk lamp for painting - £52.94 Amazon
Nuln Oil £6.97
Drax Marvel Champions pack £14.58 Gameslore
Spirit Island Promo pack 2 £26.71 GTG US
Redgrass games Wet palette £23.63 Amazon
8 extra Vallejo paints £19.36
Geeknson table extras (delivery fee) - £25
Dungeon petz £25.11 Amazon
Mansions of madness path of the serpent - £31.88 Amazon
Venom Marvel Champions pack £14.58 Gameslore preorder

June total - £335.46 (Although £124.95 of that was getting set up for painting)

Year total to date - £3038.97

Still to be paid for in future when PM opens
Robinson Crusoe PM

Unsure on whether to go for and need to decide before next month
My fathers work
ICE

I haven't added any expenses from it to my total but I'm debating about cancelling going to UKGE as train fares are extortionate (£200) and between that and hotel (£150) plus spending money and food etc I'd be looking at around £550+. I can afford it but it seems like I'd only be getting half the experience with a lot of stuff not going to be there and so not sure if its worth it or not. I may just spend some of the cash on some new games and have a games weekend with the friend I'm supposed to be going with. Decisions decisions...

Total for this year:

£56 Cosmic Frog

£2.50 Doppelt So Clever

£4 Lost Ruins Of Arnak (Raffle Win)

I have Ankh with most of the extras on the way but that was paid for last year so I don't know if I should count that?

£62.50 not bad!

Lockdown has definitely helped to curb my spending. Looking forward to playing some of the old stuff more than ever.

I’m new to board gaming, really, only buying stuff maybe once a year but when I do…woah somebody stop me! I’m going to join this thread to try and stop overspending by having a running tally in black and white! :D

August

Mansions of Madness - £72.99

Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion - £42.50

Root - £48

Total: £115.49

Edit: watched a few reviews for Root and although it sounds cool, it also sounds far too complicated for us right now, given neither my wife nor I are very experienced board gamers, and my son is only 8, so I cancelled the order. One to pick up in the future, perhaps.

I've still been keeping my running tally on my phone but haven't updated here in a bit so here's July and August's totals, since I gave UKGE a miss I spent a fair bit in July getting into Dice Throne and picking up Dinosaur Island Extreme edition (and expansion).

August seen me go a bit crazy on picking up more funkoverse. I have had the base Harry Potter one for a couple years and had picked up the Game of Thrones and Jurassic Park ones cheap in the time afterwards but only tried it for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. I'm not typically a skirmish style game person, nor have I ever felt inclined to pick up any funkos but this has got me and I'll likely keep an eye out for others I don't have if they are going cheap!

Glad to see the back of the Marvel United Xmen PM too as I just kept adding to it and now have everything ordered from it, the total amount I've spent on it is crazy although I really enjoyed painting the core set so I've got enough minis to paint for the rest of my life!

July
Marvel Funkoverse 4 pack and thanos - £37.55 Amazon
Dinosaur island and expansion KS editions - £85 Facebook group
Marvel United All the extras in the PM I hadn't added and paid for (Cardboard locations etc) - £81.17 + (Plastic tokens) £36.55
Dice Throne S1 Rerolled (2x packs) and Dinosaur island Folded Space Insert - £50.64 Zatu
Dice Throne S1 Rerolled (2x packs) - £38.98 Board game hut
Dice Throne rerolled S2 pack - £15 Facebook
Ice PM - £102.33 KS w delivery
Villagers expansion - £17 KS
Now or Never Preorder -  £57.21 Red Raven directly with delivery
Brush soap- £10

July Total - £531.43
Year total to date - £3570.40

August
Darkwing Duck Funkoverse - £10.40 Amazon
Back to the Future Funkoverse - £9.99 B and M
Alice in Wonderland Funkoverse - £15.60
Jurassic Park T-Rex and Malcolm Funkoverse - £14.50
Robin and Catwoman Funkoverse- £8.99
Marvel Champions Thanos expansion and sleeves £48.61
Isle of Cats PM £103
Underwater Cities Expansion - £35.23

Aug Total - £247.32
Year total to date - £3817.72

Sept
Robinson Crusoe PM - £55 (Delivery and addons)

Yet to be charged but due this month
Flamecraft KS - $79 (£58)
Wild Serengeti KS- $52 (£38)
The Split KS - £15 (Will upgrade to the £25 one in PM if possible)
