The Young Ones

Gutted.

I remember loving it when I was younger. Just watched the first series, and it's absolute pants. I was especially disappointed after having raved about it to my wife, who was expecting big things. I honestly can't believe how poor it is. There's probably half a dozen decent gags in the whole first series, if that.

Are the later ones any better than the first? I absolutely loved it back in the day.

Young Ones was very much 'of it's time'. It was astonishing when it was first shown.

Why though? Not being facetious, really want to know. I honestly remember loving it, but coming back to it now it just seems painful. Cringeworthy, even.

Why was it so well received when it first aired?

Because it just broke all the rules. It as genuinely outrageous. We could not believe what we were watching. All that stuff has been done better since and worse (Bottom).

Fair enough, that makes sense. Still feel a bit gutted about it though, although more than 20 years later I guess my expectations were a little high.

Oh well, about to wean her onto Blackadder. I know I'm not going to be disappointed with that one

Laurel & Hardy are much more than Slapstick.

Young Ones is more comparable to The Three Stooges.

Indeed, and I find that the stooges miss the mark sometimes. But Laurel and Hardy, nothing seems to come close to their efforts. Some of the stuntwork for it's time is utterly incredible.

Take Laurel and Hardy for instance, seventy twelve million years old and it never fails to raise a laugh.

Spot on. Laurel and Hardy are just comedy genius IMO.

As for the Young Ones, it has aged badly but as Pickford said it was groundbreaking at the time, especially considering the tepid sitcoms that were around.

Terry and June? Quick, here comes the vicar, let's all hide in the wardrobe.

The Young Ones was definitley of it's time because it dealt with the social and political issues of the era and gave them a big v-sign. The eighties was a time of extreme change and huge politcal backlash towards the relatively new Tory government and Mags and the first series tried to reflect that in an albeit purile way.

The second series was much funnier with totally irreverant episodes and is absolutely so much better when watched today as due to the last 31years of Tory  government we have become desensitised to actually looking and seeing what a load of shitters we have in the house of commons nowadays let alone comment against them eh, Mr Hutton.

Don't be so sure, Blackadder 2 and Blackadder 4 are still as funny now as ever, but 1 and 3 suck more arse than ever. IMO obviously.

Apart from that awful time machine millenium special.

I love the first series too (written by Atkinson himself) although it's a very different animal to the later ones.

Don't think I saw the special. I've seen all four series, and nothing else. The last one is my fave, then the first I reckon. I'm hoping it's timeless, although I've not seen it in a good while.

How could it not be though, with Atkinson and Robinson together? The dialogue between the two is just pure class.

I hope.

I think we have to remember the Young Ones as it was.

Me, I was but a child, and thought it was the funniest thing ever.

But then, I thought Red Dwarf was funny when I was fourteen. Until I realised how absolutely dire it is, and how every performer involved in it is so completely odious.

The Young Ones is still ace, man. The Young Ones hasn't changed. It's YOU.

Bottom's first series is actually very, very good. The second and third aren't anywhere near as great, but I still like them despite their faults.

Filthy Rich and Catflap is due out on DVD in March! Hurrah!

I've just been downloading 'The Young Ones' and I think they're still great and now my kids love them.

Also started getting 'Bottom' to replace my old VHS ones.

And I've been waiting ages to have the chance to watch 'Filthy, Rich and Catflap' again.

Granted I'm older, but I was still very shocked at quite how bad I found it coming back to it. There's plenty of other stuff I liked when I was younger that I still find very appealing. I was just very disappointed with The Young Ones. Anyhow I'm going to rent the second series next, and see what I make of that.

I concur about the second series of the Young Ones... it is better, but don't pin all your hopes on it, it's not THAT much better.

I'm still a fan of the series, though. I like the atmosphere. (Probably just 'cos I was also a fan when I was younger)

The most entertaining thing about Young Ones, IMO, is Rick Mayall. I love watching him be that repulsive little shit.

Hmm,I don't think I want to buy it on DVD now, lest my perfect memories be ruined.

I loved it before, though. Me and my brother would sit down in the kitchen late every Friday (?) night, to watch The Young Ones, followed by Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Good stuff.

I think it's great. There's loads of great music in it, and some brilliant comedy - how can anything with Motorhead and a University Challenge pastiche in the same episode be crap?

or the Damned singing video nasty!...

Sham.
