The Dollar Bin

Thought this could be a helpful thread as a spin-off from the vinyl lovers topic, so here we go. I wondered if it might be nice to have a depository for recommendations of musical bargains that still exist in the cutthroat world of collecting – because as nice as spending your mortgage on that white whale record can be, there's no feeling sweeter than grabbing a good deal. Maybe an obscure artist that's worth a listen, or a label that fell out of fashion perhaps? All genres gladly welcomed.

Here's a couple of quick ones if you're into that sort of thing.

Elixir Vitae E.P. - Prelude-2-Dance 12" Edition II

Cheapo compilation of some awesome tunes with very decent sound quality. The four tracks on this would mount up to be quite hefty on the wallet and the Unit 2 track is especially pricey.

Milton Nascimento – Milton

Brazilian music can be super expensive, but this album is a masterpiece and easy to get for sub £10.

That Milton one says five copies available, but when I click it only shows one copy, how does that work?

I’d be extremely wary of buying anything from Europe now - they want 15 euros for shipping, who knows what else would get added on when it arrives. :(

So if it helps, the VAT from overseas purchase gets added at 20% if the purchase price not including shipping fee is over £135 I think plus a standard £12 admin fee. If it's under that then our awful government assume that the vendor or marketplace has taken care of it (I can't remember the exact wording).

But yeah since January 1st this whole importing business is much more expensive.

Ah that's annoying. Maybe they've excluded the UK as a destination now. I wasn't logged in when I looked so it probably just showed me everything. This link shows all of the available copies, but yeah tread carefully with the import fees. It comes up quite a lot from domestic sellers though so worth checking in now and then!

I see, so in theory there shouldn’t be any additional charge for buying records? Slayer collections notwithstanding, of course...

I’m not sure I get it how it works, I see 117 for sale there, but only 5 on your first link...both seem to open up in the app where I’m logged in to my account.

Try this link to all of the versions for the Milton: https://www.discogs.com/master/view/133084

And yeah, Brexit has fucked buying records from abroad.

Here's a cheap proto broken beat 12" banger I picked up recently for £3: https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?master_id=6456&ev=mb

Mass Production – Welcome to our World

This is a great album you often see in the 3-for-£10 bins, but it's also really cheap on Discogs too. It's disco and soul, but has a really loose live feel to it. It's got the sort of independent release sound that collectors spend hundreds on and reissue labels like Athens of the North excel at, but this is super pocket friendly. Every track is a killer.

What are we counting as cheap in here?

I picked up Passion by Vanilla Sound Corps (the best house tune ever made in the UK) and Schoolly-D’s Parkside 5-2/Saturday Night 12”s for a tenner each delivered, those seemed decent prices to me.

I guess anything goes, just whatever people consider a good deal really. I think those were great purchases as loads of that classic 12" tackle gets silly prices attached to it. Bit jealous actually as I've not got enough of that early hardcore rap.

This was a good find I thought. From an artist who fell out of fashion a bit and an era with probably the highest proportion of dreck going, but! I heard Mr Scruff play this ages ago and just saw it's pennies. Side A gets going eventually, but the B side is amazing. Not what I would expect at all.

I’m sure I had a Chicken Lips tune on a compilation somewhere, but can’t track it down.

I’ve got to stop looking on Discogs - I only bought that copy of Passion because I rationalised that it was a bargain and if something happens to my existing copy I will be heartbroken...which as I haven’t played out in about five years seems a pretty unlikely scenario.

This one maybe? Sounds better than I remembered it actually.

I know what you mean about Discogs. I wanted the UK 12" of Bobby Womack's How Could You Break My Heart as it's my favourite song probably and it felt mad I didn't own it, then I thought I'd better pad out the order as the postage was the same up to 8 records. So, when you think about it I'm actually saving money. That wishlist on there will be the death of my finances though. It's like 4,000 deep now which is upsetting.

It was only a tenner. It was graded as Very Good+ which I wouldn't touch usually, but the guy said it played really well it was just someone had written all over the label which isn't a concern to be honest. The other way of getting it is on the Roads of Life LP I think, but I always thought that album was a bit of a duffer and it's quite expensive to boot.

Oh, I don’t know much about the grading - the ones I bought are VG+, Passion is much better condition than my copy so it’s all good.

The seller also chucked in a couple of extra tunes - neither my sort of thing (Big Boy by Colette & Hey Ho by Lords of Acid!) but a nice gesture nonetheless.

That is a nice thing to do. I've done it before but usually when trying to smooth things over after I've made a bosh of the delivery or gone on holiday and forgot to send things out. Grading is a mystery, but anything below Very Good Plus usually means it's absolutely shagged.

Appears on Groove Armada's Doin it After Dark comp which is still boss to this day

This album is a jazz-dance Dingwalls classic and yours for literally two or three quid tops. I like it as it's an easy one to flick past as the artist was a old hat by this point and the list of songs doesn't inspire much confidence, but it contains at least two certified 10/10 anthems and the rest is very good indeed. Anyone with a passing interest in jazz can find something to enjoy here.
