Mario Golf Super Rush

Still undecided about getting this. I don’t understand how the shots work in this one. You press A to start the shot, A again to set power and then just leave it? 🤷‍♂️ It seems to perfectly hit the horizontal bar every time. So no timing skill required?

Timing is in the power. There's a range of the bar at the top that makes it less accurate. That range increases in bunkers, rough terrain, etc

Its pretty simple overall so far (not played much myself).

I could probably do without the speed golf in adventure mode. Doesn't add much really.

Thanks. That’s put me off. I always felt the whole point was being able to time the contact moment with the ball. It gives tension all the way through striking the ball as a badly timed contact could mess up all of your planning.  Seems like they’ve tried to make it more forgiving.

Both yes and no. The meter fills twice, first time is for power and top/back spin. This is where the tension comes in, as the top part of every stroke includes the "shift" area where you can mess up by pressing too late.

The second time is to add curl, and you can also get this wrong by adding 3 arrows instead of 2, or be at 8 o'clock instead of 9. It's less stressful, admittedly, but still important enough to make sure you get it right.

This is good but ultimately disappointing really. I just did a "boss fight", which much like Mario tennis just shouldn't be in this imho.

Or there should be a vanilla tournament/ career mode and also a wacky adventure mode.

I don't mind the courses per se and it plays an alright game of golf but they really get too carried away with the story/ RPG stuff. If anything, it should be more like golf story or something as all of the running about is ultimately pointless. Very few of the NPCs say anything useful and the loading between areas makes it more annoying than it needs to be.

It's very strange.

It really is very odd. I love the concept of Cross Country Golf, but think it has no place appearing in front of me when it does. I would much rather have a standard career, with the optional crazy modes coming towards the latter stages. As it is I'm likely to abandon Adventure due to simply not being good enough at getting up cliffs.

I feel like being able to choose a Lob shot would be useful, but the Lob Master won't help me out. I expected there to be some kind of quest/reward structure, but am starting to think it's just going to be a grind. While online really is exactly what I hoped it would be, I currently see a huge blocker in my way to more fun. Which is a shame, this is an unusual misstep from Nintendo who generally nail this kind of balancing thing.

The actual golf itself is very good. I didn't expect the level of shot control available, and am very much looking forward to games with friends. (Even Cross Country games, if I ever get past it in Adventure!)

I actually really enjoyed Tennis Aces but this definitely feels Super Rushed*

*struggle to imagine I'm the first person to make this joke but then a lack of effort or originality seems to sum the whole thing up rather nicely.

You get access to lob shots later. Far too late to be useful.

Also bizarrely you get them immediately after you pass the cross country golf where it would be most useful.

I can't help thinking it's attempting to be aimed at 10 year olds or something but then I think that all of the banal chat and faffing about is going to be too boring for that age.

It seems incredibly misguided which I can only put at camelot's feet as Mario kart doesn't have weird wandering about Mario GP 1 with people telling you how to brake (and it really doesn't need it).

Even if you want to do a tutorial type element, have it introduced and demonstrated as you go round a course. Or even do it simpler than that - here's the 4 18 hole courses and after you've done those, wario turns up and plays havoc by changing the topography (or even lazier, just "switches on" all of the stuff like the tornados and Petey piranhas).

And although I still don't know what other courses outside of new Donk city are on the way, it's almost like they intentionally didn't have courses in dry dry desert or what have you, it's weird. Those types of locations are there in all but name but for some reason it's all a "new" area.

I'm still going to finish it as I have a strange love for all things video game golf ever since pga on the amiga but I can't help but feel it's a very oddly missed opportunity.

Even very basically, outside of a course based on Mario 64 Peach's Castle for instance (which was in the n64 one iirc), the lack of cross pollination insanity, even within Mario is incredibly lacklustre. Imagine a novelty track that was actually a part of a Mario kart track and the obstacles were the other idiots racing their kart around a particular corner of the fairway or some such?

It's painfully easy to come up with more interesting novelties than they have done that it almost seems intentionally making a point by not using all of that legacy.

Odd.

They should just get the everybody's golf people to do it.

Camelot made the first Everybody's Golf. Yes, really!

Then some Camelot staff split off to form Clap Hanz and made most of the other Everybody's Golf games. Their latest is Clap Hanz Golf for Apple Arcade (avoid: zero difficulty curve to keep you playing and paying your monthly fee, special club chip-ins that make the game too easy).

Everybody's Golf 2 was the best one. It was all downhill after that.

Anyway...

Pretty gutted this Mario Golf is a half-baked, ill considered, soulless, shell of the game we all wanted.

Omg I'm watching the credits now after apparently finishing adventure golf.

It ended with a 'hit it 3 times' boss fight which was inexplicable in so many ways I'm tempted to do a huge post all about this game.

It's one of the most... confusing games I've played in a long time. It's almost like it's a bootleg or something, I'm wondering if I'm missing a big part of it somehow too given how the famous Mario characters barely even get involved.

The only thing I can assume is they put so much effort into the (admittedly fun) speed golf thing that they just threw together some sort of 1p mode just so it was there. But of all of the Mario sports games, you'd think golf is a very obvious game to have more of a 1p mode than any others. And even the 1p mode they do have, isn't even a "play through all 18 holes of all the courses against your favourite Mario characters at normal golf" it's just the speed golf.

But you can play normal golf with quite a few rule options too, so it almost would have been more effort to make the career in the way they did, rather than it just being like a normal golf tour.

I may sound like I'm having a go, but it's more that I just don't understand why it's like it is. It's still a good golf game and I'll enjoy more multiplayer but it's definitely a 6 or 7/10 or maybe even lower for the seemingly obvious missed opportunities.

Although those are compounded if you've played all of the previous Mario golf titles. If this is your first Mario golf game then I imagine it's a lot better because you wouldn't know about how they have got worse in really simple areas.

Ah well. It's still better than that Rory mcilroy ea golf game :P

My partner & I are having fun with the standard golf. If you just want a simple golf game to understand in 10 seconds then this is it.

The Adventure Mode is pretty bad, though.

There’s bizarrely few options in the Settings. We wanted to turn the music off and keep the sound effects. Nope.

I was going to pick this up today in cex as I have some voucher credit but I think I’ll swerve it now reading that bit. Even Mario Tennis Aces had a standard tournament 1 player.

How do you unlock the extra courses?

Is it only in Adventure Mode

XC Golf can do one

You can play and win a round of 18 on the preceding course to unlock the next if you don't want to do adventure.

You can still plug that in if you want.

I'm enjoying this for what it is. It's no Toadstool Tour, but what is there is fun enough.

Who wants to play in an inaugural forum tourney? Whilst we're still going through Adventure mode (or not, judging by responses) I would recommend the following rules: 18 holes of regular golf on Bonny Greens, no Miis, special shots allowed. Hopefully this should be as close to a 'normal' Mario Golf bit of golfing for the time being. Winner is the person with the lowest score out of everyone at the end! Depending on how many people want to play, results from this tournament may affect seedings of future tournaments. Quote me if you're in and say when you're available to play. :)

Speed Gold in Adventure Mode just doesn't work for me at all. For a start, I'm not entirely sure if I'm supposed to be trying to play quickly or well. The actual process of running is piss poor boring. But worse of all, because you've got to control your character whilst the ball is in mid-flight you don't actually see it land - robbing you of both the satisfaction of watching a cracking shot and also the opportunity to learn when it goes pear-shaped.

I've had fun just playing a normal 18 holes on my tod (perfect kind of thing for when you're half-watching the football), but some the decisions made in this game are proper bizarre. It feels like it's trying to fill a hole in the release schedule, but then I'm not even sure that hole exists, so fuck knows what they're playing at.

The odd thing with speed golf (other than the running being boring and a distraction) is that speed doesn't really matter. The shot clock so far has been generous so it's not even achieving a pressured environment. Just wish it didn't exist.

Did my first XC holes. Erm, yeah. Why? It's like they had these ideas, implemented them and forgot to reconsider if they were actually fun.

Oh you did a chip in Eagle? Well balls to you, you can't see it again.

You can capture video on the Switch. I'd prefer a proper method too, but they're probably wanting people to use it.

Yeah but you have to record before you make the shot, I don't know when I'm going to sink a chip in that reliably and recording everything is a bit extra.
