VR is an incredible experience, but having used both PSVR and Quest (1 & 2), I can say that the revolutionary aspect is the lack of tether with the Quest, not the higher res as it means the way you play games can change.

Ah, but the PSVR is a mess of cables, so yes the Quest will seem revelatory in comparison. PSVR2 on the other hand is just one cable connecting to the front of the PS5. I've got a Rift S as well as the Quest 2 and I prefer the Rift S for PC gaming despite the cable.

Your point about time is an interesting one, but that's basically just moving the goalposts. ;)

All they need is AstroBot in VR again, that game on the 1st PSVR blew my mind in ways that Mario 64 dilld, a I have to do is remember that magic and I'm in again for PSVR2 😄 I have the email from Sony with access details to buy one later in November. Will Sony take the money up-front or at dispatch? I've never bought directly from Sony before let alone pre-ordered anything from them.

Isn't the PSVR just one cable to the device? Yes the PSVR2 might be easier to setup but it's still a tethered experience. Whether that matters is up to the user but it's definitely a shame they couldn't go fully untethered to make it a smoother experience.

Fuck no! It's a mess of cables and a breakout box with multiple other cables, including having an external camera (also wired) plugged in and appropriately positioned in the room. The difference in setup and ease-of-use between PSVR 1 and 2 is night and day.

But one cable.to headset?

I have one. It's packed away now. I hated setting it up but once it was in my setup playing was just plugging the headset into the breakout box I think. It was that tether I disliked more than the horrible initial setup.

Eeehh, when you put it that way, it kind of is:

That top cable is attached to the headset, and that cable splits into two and plugs into square part of the bottom right cable, which then plugs into the breakout box in the middle.

I knew I'd answered previously why this is not as simple as some think:

Wireless VR presently isn't as sure-fire as some think. The Oculus solution to connect to a PC isn't great and no way in fucking hell would your average user manage to get it working properly. If that was the only wireless option for Sony right now then they're right to exclude it. They'd get fuckloads of "faulty" returns and a load of bad user reviews simply saying "it doesn't work".  The Oculus Quest is great but battery life isn't all that unless you spend more, and the games are limited or variations on really old games. Resi 4 in VR is amazing, but it's still Resi 4 which is a seventeen year-old game and looks it. Yes, VR elevates it, but compare that to Half Life Alyx and ... llllloooooolllll.

The other option is dedicated wireless hardware for the PS5 and PSVR. Not only is that expensive and would cause battery issues, but correct me if I'm wrong, that's still open to outside interference from other wireless devices in the house, neighbours' wi-fi etc. All of that is outside of Sony's control and could again lead to returns and bad reviews. So again, I believe Sony have done the right thing, kept it wired but simplified it with just one cable that goes into the front of the PS5, and then concentrated on what they can control: The visuals, and the ease & comfort of the experience.

I stand by that final paragraph, and I guess we'll see how this goes next year. :)

Also,  from that same day:

I wonder how hard Sony are trying to get that Alyx port, there must be some money on the table there.

I don't think we'll see it despite it making sense for both Valve and Sony, and strong rumours of behind the scenes negotiations, even a deal being reached.

Would love to be proved wrong on this.

Beat sabre will still be better on Quest than PSVR / PSVR2 as the cable prevents the 360 mode…. but more than that the Quest can be used anywhere but the PSVR is stuck in the room the PS5 is - fine if your sat down but any room scale stuff is another potential restriction as most people dont have the room needed in the living room.

Living room VR is what Sony should be concentrating on anyway. And games like Alyx, Skyrim, Resi VIII, that new Crossfire ... they all lend themselves to those.

No and I’m not even sure I registered correctly. I haven’t had any confirmation and the page still had a “please sign in” notification at the top even though I’d already done so.

How are people selected anyway? Is it first come, first served?

And an upgraded version of No Man's Sky! Which is epic on PSVR1, let alone 2.

If you think it's great on the OG PSVR, you should see it on the Rift/Quest via PC. :) NMS may not have been announced*, but it's absolutely odds-on for a PSVR2 release.

I'd happily buy Skyrim for the ... *counts fingers* ... fifth time, but I doubt there's any chance of that now what with MS owning Bethesda.

*edit:

Why don’t MS have Quest or Rift on Xbox??

Surely it would be pretty simple to get it up an running?

They’re working with Meta to put Cloud Gaming on Quest, so it might be something we see in the future if it all goes well.

Hmmm, that's a non-starter, too much latency for VR, at least with current broadband tech and speeds.

Saying that, I can just see it now. MS announces Cloud Gaming on Quest, and all it is is a big screen in VR to play on, instead of actual VR. Given MS's track record I can absolutely see them doing that thinking they're onto a winner.

edit: I just clicked the link, that's exactly what it is!!

Of course that's what it is. And it's a reasonable and sensible choice. It's not some magic winner in their eyes. They've been very straightforward. Put XCloud on every single screen. This is just part of that strategy. No downside. This is how cloud gaming should be. Accessible from everywhere all the time.

As you say, cloud VR is a non-starter.

Yes, that’s what it is, but it could be their first steps towards proper VR. Personally I think they should concentrate on getting a steady stream of first party titles flowing first.

Anyway, that’s going off topic, so I’ll leave you all to the VR chat.

I can understand them wanting to offer a more high end experience with fully formed games, and they clearly had a market for it with the first PSVR, so why oh why would you alienate all those customers who are already invested by not offering backwards compatibility? It should have been up there as one of if not the most important selling point.

Can you imagine now if the PS5 wasn’t backwards compatible with PS4? Madness.

The decidedly odd own goal of not offering BC makes me suspect it really wasn’t possible. It makes no sense to do so otherwise, as why would you deny a peripheral access to a huge, already existing library of games that could help it over the usual launch drought? Of course, we’ll have to wait until some dedicated nerd gets hold of a PSVR2 and analyses the tech, in comparison to its predecessor, to have a better idea.

Sony are leaving money on the table by not having this PC compatible and also their VR titles playable on PC.  I know this maybe a generalisation, with the cost of PSVR2, PC owners would be willing to pay for the headset if they are paying silly money for GPU’s.  Also the PCVR community is screaming out for more content.

I can understand why they haven't for launch: They're not going to want a load of launch units being scooped up by PC users when there's clearly demand from their own userbase.

I'm hoping compatibility will be a thing in the future.

I was well up for this and even forwarded the email onto my wife so I could say things like "Xmas then"  But I think I'm going to wait - I want to see what happens in the games that come out, and I'm a little nervous about the price given that I spend 70% of the time with my original PSVR feeling sick.  I'm hoping that improved resolution can cure this, but who can tell.

I hastily ordered a PS5 last night and having slept on it I now feel a bit stupid and will probably return it. I love VR and it’s most of my gaming time (which is very little tbh) so to spend £1k+ when I already have a gaming PC and a quest is crazy.

I think I’ll wait and see what happens with regards to PC compatibility and maybe just pick up the headset later. If valve don’t release something better in the mean time that is…
