PSVR2 - out now!

I've put a pre-pre-order request in, because I loved my PSVR 1, and for all my love of my Quest 2, fuck Facebook/Meta - and there is totally a place for a lot of horse power in this race. If I manage to snag one on the day, I'll think carefully before I commit to it, but if Alyx get's announced, then I'm there day 1.

I think people who'd actually consider early adopting PSVR2 probably aren't in that category. Doesn't matter if it's £300 or £600. We're talking the enthusiasts enthusiasts.

I don’t disagree, but early adopters absolutely do not make products successful. The mass market does.

I love VR and have a PSVR1 and a Quest 2.  But it doesn't matter that PSVR1 was £350, needed a camera and controllers extra, and the inflation calculator says etc..  the fact is that whilst inflation does mean that £550 is the same sort of cash today as £350 was then, wages have not increased in line with inflation for some time.  This winter most people with a spare £500 will probably turn the heating on.  It's madness taking a games console that many people haven't even seen on a store shelf yet (or have seen at an inflated price at CEX) and making a £550 accessory that's not even backward compatible (Jesus!) and expect people to snap it up. Madness.

Totally agree! You have to have shelled out £500 for a PS5 (which many people already can’t afford) just to be able to use this. So all in, over £1000 to be able to play a handful of VR games! 🤣 Oh and then the price of the games themselves, which will no doubt have to be pretty steep due to the small market. Fuck that riiiiiiight off!

I really can’t see this selling well at all. And when it doesn’t sell, the number of games for it will dwindle to nothing and the less value it’ll have, which will leave it in a massive downward spiral.

Has anyone who registered yesterday (as opposed to the people who expressed interest months ago) received an invite yet?

I did, as mentioned above it was flagged as a "Promotion" email in gmail, so might want to check your spam.

However, early adopters build momentum for a product, and a lack of this is then really difficult to recover from and build new desirability. If you have no momentum, you have little or no mass market later.

No one is specifically buying a ps5 for this come on.

If Sony have any sense they'll offer some back compat patches / chea upgrades too.

As I got my PSVR for £120 I don't think I'm in the target market tho.

For what it's worth, there are one or two games at launch which, if you already have the PSVR version, you get the PSVR2 version for free. The notable one here is Pistol Whip.

I've set aside about a grand of my upcoming house sale for a 'treat' ... If there's a decent psvr/PS5 bundle (and it's actually available) I may not be able to resist!

I am disappointed there isn't PC functionality. I do wonder if there will be some low effort PS5 ports to boost the library (Astrobot, Squadrons.. Skyrim again! )

530 quid for VR is not mass market.   The other heasdsets priced at that range have shown this already.  It'll sell I'm sure to the usual early adopters but I can't imagine it'll push VR any further than the first headset did.  I'll be waiting till it drops to the 250-300 mark.

Sony hardware UK launch prices:

PS1 = £299

PS2 = £299

PSP = £179

PS3 = £429

PS Vita = £229/£279

PS4 = £349

PS4 Pro = £349

PSVR = £349

PS5 = £359/£449

Prediction:

PSVR2 = £399

I think everything Sony launched after PS3 has been speculated to be £599 at launch and it never has been the case.

well i guess it's not £599

My prediction of £399 was just for the headset and not including the two PSVR2 controllers packed in, which I put a value of let's say...£65 each.

£399 + £65 + £65 =£529

Spoiler

😎

Apparently quite a few teams are working on upgrades of their PSVR titles. After The Fall has been announced as one of the free upgrades, but that could be to try and generate some good press following that game’s wobbly launch. Even 50% of them offered for free would be a good result.

 The upgrade to PS5 and PSVR2 hardware is exciting if you imagine yourself playing AAA games on it.

 Stuff like Pistol Whip will benefit from not having to use the move controllers but that’s about it really, does a higher resolution really matter for that tier of vr game?

The hardware upgrades and resulting high price would only be fully justified if there’s a decent stream of AAA PSVR2 content, either vr conversions of existing games or new content. The announced games don’t inspire too much confidence that that will be the case.

I still think VR has this concern over how many "active" games does the average player want? The on rails and reasonably stationary experiences reflect the reality I think which is that not only do you need the money to want this, but you might need space, and the energy/dedication to put it on, etc. The limit isn't so much the technology but the desire.

VR experiences are stunning. They can be transformative. But most of the time I don't want that level of physical investment personally. The result is that most VR games have to try to sort of reign in their scope. Make it so that you can be a bit more sedate in how you play them.

These are great but they're a hard sell to consumers and the commitment to do more for a developer/publisher is simply that the audience doesn't exist.

Not to mention developers don’t want to put their customers on a vomit comet and there’s such a wide range of tolerances - and willingness to stretch one’s tolerance - out there. It must be quite a challenging pitch.

I dunno, I think consumer culture is in a pretty bizarre place these days. PS5s are still going for over RRP, people are fighting to pay Nvidia £2K for a GPU. It’s not restricted to gaming, either.

It doesn’t seem uncommon for people to overstretch for birthdays and Xmas, etc. I suspect volumes will be small and for this to be scalped. Hype culture and what not will ensure that, even if the actual demand isn’t really there.

Their biggest mistake is probably releasing it after Christmas.
