Modern Retro Handheld Game Players thread

It's the first time I've genuinely been intrigued by something like this. That price mark on the site I found as well really did tempt me. I'm just bothered about accumulating games, but really, a decent hand held capable of playing things and is being updated for support with the right sort of controls, decent size and screen. I might have to get one.

There is an extensive review of the S7800B here: http://dingoo-scene.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/the-dingoo-scene-jxd-s7800b-rockchip_11.html

I'm considering getting one from here which is the cheapest price I've seen with quickish delivery. AliExpress seems to essentially be an eBay for Chinese sellers. I've used them once before and didn't have a problem with my order. I haven't had any experience with that particular seller though. I have come across BangGood, but haven't used them before.

Dx.com actually have it listed for a seemingly ridiculous £30, but are currently out of stock. I'd be surprised if they stock it again, especially at that price. My experience hasn't been too bad with them, but their stuff can take a while to get to you.

It was me that convinced Ashmatuk to get one, whilst he's had issues with his I've never had a problem with the build quality of mine, to be honest I was suprised just how good the build quality was considering price.

Don't get a 64gb card, although some people get then working there's a lot of faffing about, 32gb cards work perfectly

Someone in the reviews on Amazon said there are noticeable lines. Do you agree with that or have any idea of what they're on about? I was about to buy one from there and that comment put me off. :P I might just get a Shield instead.

how much was it on there then?

£115.99, which was a lot more than getting it off a Chinese site. However, I should get it today (through Prime) and should hopefully be easier to return if I have any problems with it. There are a few sellers that have it a bit cheaper but they didn't have Prime as an option.

What's the selection of emulators for it like? Will it run NES, Sega Master System etc? Banggood suggests otherwise:

9 Emulator games(PS1, N64, GBA, SFC, MD, FC)

If there's an Android emulator for a system there's no reason why this wouldn't be able to run it. I know it runs NES and SNES (which I'd assume are SFC and FC in your list) as well as the likes of Dreamcast, Mega CD, MAME, Neo Geo and DS to name but a few.

Got mine. :) First impressions are that it's a bit hefty (a bit heavier than than the Wii U gamepad I think) but should be alright to play on my lap. Screen is nice. Not sure about the controls at the moment. The shoulder buttons seem a bit awkward. The sticks are solid but not sure about the placement. The unit could do with some grips. I've been playing Mario Kart with the gamepad for the last few days so I guess I'm used to the "comfort" of that and that's hardly the most comfortable controller in the world. The D-pad seems good if a bit "clicky".

Please note that I'm a fussy git and have only messed about with it a couple of minutes without actually playing anything on it.

Any people getting these I recommend highly getting the .emu series of emulators made by someone called Robert Borgia, they are fantastic. The difference in playing Roms via these and the standard built in emulators is like night and day. Also ePsxe for your PS1 Roms :)

What platforms have you tried?

I think I'm going to return mine. I just find the sticks and shoulder buttons a bit awkward. They're not terrible but they could be better. I think it could benefit from a bit more grip to it too.

I don't want to put anyone off it as it seems a pretty solid (albeit somewhat plasticy) unit. The screen is beautiful and it's actually slightly lighter than the Wii U gamepad. It's just my personal preference. If I didn't already have a Nexus 7 with a dual shock I can use on it I'd probably persevere with it more. I'd prefer a unit with controls built into it but as the controls aren't that great (IMO) it doesn't seem worth sticking with it. I guess I am also looking for an excuse not to hang onto it because I know I have too many things with screens.

I've got them all but the MD.emu, NES.emu, GBA.emu are all brilliant

Can't believe people would return one after the first day ! It took me 3 weeks just to get mine set up to my preferences ! I find myself not only using mine for retro gaming but watching films and all sorts

I'm tempted by the 32- and 64-bit emulation, good Saturn and DC emus would sell it to me, it'd be a shame to shell out for one when I have a CFW PSP lying around.

If Amazon won't take the return (unlikely) then I'd sell it. I don't need another GBA.

And yes I'm weird like that, but as I said I already have a Nexus 7. That's capable of running the same stuff on it, it's "just" missing the hardware controls which is why I wanted this. However, the controls aren't for me and I don't see that improving. I might hang onto it for a couple more days to see if my mind changes. This is incredible value for what it is, it's just a shame the design isn't a bit better.
