There aren't really too many ps1 games that demand the second stick, but having one stick comes in very handy for any racing game that supports analogue and plenty of other games that just use one stick.

I've just bought one for my brother's birthday pressie and it's really neat.

 

The screen is great although the native res of 320x240 isn't quite right for some consoles/games (so there is a little shimmering sometimes) but it is bright and sharp.

The controls are really good - not perfect and not as good as something like an 8bitDo but really good nonetheless.

The emulators all seem to run really well and PS1 (from the two games I tried) work great too.  Neo Geo was really good too.

 

I can't recommend it enough. :)

Excellent! Really nice little unit I think, well worth getting it sorted imho. What's surprised me about mine is how much time I've spent on it. I thought maybe I'd enjoy it very occasionally, but I've spent loads of time across various games on it. Currently on a GBA Castlevania (Aria of Sorrow) which is nice on our wee gold GBA clamshell, but much nicer on this! Much better screen and nicer design imho.

If you just want to play roms I would get the RG350. If you want to spend loads of time customising and tampering getting a GPi. I've made my first skin ever for something for the gpi - used the gz35 dark theme and edited a bit to make it look nicer and added tronkyfran backgrounds. Looks slick as hell.

Spend way more time trying to get the perfect build than playing anything, which is the usual way. Currently awaiting v2 of supreme build to try, it drops later today so will be getting that up and running over the weekend.

 

I convinced my mate to get a RG350, he's not a tamperer or gadget guy so I think it's the best choice for someone who just wants something to pick up and play.

 

However if you can find a first gen PSP in good quality and cheap, get that instead. It's the same, generally half the price on ebay, and you can run PSP games on it as well as everything these units do.

Just about to give the latest Recalbox 6.1.1 a go on the Gpi. I've shied away from it for some time as I had mixed results with the main edition on the Pi 3B+, but having been off work recently I decided to give it another go and it is absolutely superb so far. I love the customisable interface which is much nicer than the Retropie one imho. In the past I've always found performance and user options a bit lacking in comparison to Retropie, but this latest edition seems so much better. I'm considering switching to it on my Mega Pi. I much prefer the new O Zone UI for Retroarch too.

 

Anyway it's copying my stuff over for now so I'll post back when I've tried it on the Gpi. :-)

Well it's very good and doesn't take any work at all to install. There's no set up now, as the scripts are installed by default so you're good from the get-go. The only thing I had was the D pad not working but that was solved by holding select and up for five seconds.

 

It won't be replacing my GPi community users image though. That is still the best one. Performance still isn't so great (I noticed both GBA and SNES struggling more than my main image, with glitches and audio drops), and also Recalbox does not offer many ports, so while I have SoR Remix, openBOR and Cannonball on my main image, you cannot have these on Recalbox. It does have Doom and Cave Story though.

 

Mostly I'll be sticking with my current image though because of performance. Not only do some emulators struggle, but the interface does too. HOWEVER I reckon Recalbox is well worth keeping an eye on here, and it's not hard to imagine that it will get much better.

@LumpyI've put a lot of time into the GPi now. You aren't going to get smooth play across all GBA, PS1 or SNES games as the zero isn't powerful enough. I would always make sure you are running those through the standalone emulators (not RA) with wifi and bluetooth switched off to make your play smooth as possible. I've got the GPimate coming soon, will report back on performance.

I've had one for a little over a week and it is a very nice little unit. Even better than a custom-firmwared RS-97, which is what I had been using. The screen is really sharp and the colours are bright. I've mainly been playing SNES and GBA and so far and it's been pretty much flawless. It hasn't struggled with anything I've tried yet, even Starfox runs pretty close to 60fps.

 

For PS1 games I've been using bin files, which have worked. I did try ISO, which didn't. I've only played a bit of Dino Crisis 2, and a quick go of Vandal Hearts but performance was perfect to my untrained eye.

Aye I know that, I just meant in comparison to the community image. There's noticeable drop in quality between the two OS's for those emulators. I didn't check which emus Recalbox uses though to be fair to you.

 

I like the look of that RG 350. I might hang on for a newer revision (which is inevitable at some point lets face it) as I'm not so keen on the D pad position. There's a very impressive community working on the images though. Even my RS-97 runs really well thanks to them.
