Invincible - Animation based on Kirkman's comic

We finished this the other night. It’s a bizarre show in many ways - crap animation, terrible script; they even manage to get quite inert, boring performances out of some great actors. But the story is brilliant, and it keeps throwing new heroes and villains at you while screaming “Will this stick? Will this stick? Will this stick?”, to which the answer is - yea, it mostly does.

And the violence. My oh my, the lovely violence. I’ll definitely be tuning my television in for another season.

One thing I thought this show did really well was the flight - the battles in the air were brilliant.

I enjoyed the show, but agree with @Benny's reviews. It didn't really do anything interesting with the plot strands it set up.

I thought his girlfriend was wasted

Spoiler

She seemed to exist only to be annoyed by Mark and then forgiven him.

Which became more ridiculous when it was revealed that she knew he was Invincible and was constantly dumping him because she was annoyed he didn't reveal his to her.

Yeah that bit of character "drama" was really weak. To be honest all of the character conflicts that are set up apart from the main plot thread felt incredibly arbitrary.

Spoiler

The Robot plan and the result for example, had literally no bearing on anything. It didn't ultimately go anywhere or affect any characters. Even if it leads to some sort of romantic relationship, it's actually less interesting as a result, because how much more interesting would it be for him to still be stuck in his old body, and for this to eventually be seen by Monster Girl? They would both be characters making the best despite being stuck in monstrous forms they cannot control.

All the result of his plan does is mean they can have a "normal" (if icky) romantic relationship I guess.

Comic spoiler, though so abstract that it’s not actually going to spoil anything.

Spoiler

Both those, if it follows the comic, are setup for future seasons.

side plots not being well executed is pretty true to the comic, unfortunately.

I agree with all of this, with the added wtf factor of:

Spoiler

He chose to take a kid’s body so he could hopefully have an intimate relationship with another superhero stuck in a kid’s body, even though they’re both adults, and it all gets a bit noncey if you think about it too much.

Rexplode annoyed the shit out of me not because of the character but because I couldn’t shake the image of the Brooklyn 99 guy out my head.

I've literally just finished the season, and thought it was flippin awesome. It's probably been said already, but people calling it a The Boys / One Punch Man mashup are pretty on the money.

Still no news of a second season though
