I really want this but I haven't played the last thing I bought with rewards money.

Buy it anyway! I think I might go Switch as I reckon this will be on Game Pass in 12-18 months where I’ll just start over. Some of the cars are brilliant.

People saying we haven’t had a decent arcade racer in years and then two come along at once.

Are the tracks interactive in any way?

I'm probably being a bit thick but what's the other one?

I’m having great fun with this, it’s stonkingly good looking, the drift/boost mechanics are straightforward but with lots of space for player improvement and the tracks are suitably bonkers with massive loops, jumps and all that good stuff. I’ve only dabbled in online a couple of times but races are quick to get into and can be really close and tense.  Looking forward to unlocking a few of the cooler looking cars and I need that Delorean!

Couple of early observations:

- speed and drifting are ace and addictive and we're talking Wipeout-style addictive here

- track environments are solid (college campus, skyscraper), the actual tracks however are surprisingly boring and bland

- even on Medium this is a hard game and I feel there's some rubber-band

- something seems off with the collision model and ramps and high speed. I find myself off course quite a lot, especially after jumps and when driving on ramps.

The difficulty levels seem to be missing one in between easy and medium.

Easy is piss and medium seems to totally ignore my car stats (and the others) and just make all the cars better than mine unless I drive really well

Does it suffer from wall riding (i.e. just using the wall to turn for you), or is the slowdown penalty sufficient to discourage it?

Edit: I ask because I am really up for getting this, just don’t want it ruined by poor play techniques.

The penalty is definitely discouraging and in any case, the drifting is superb fun.

I've really enjoyed this game - love an arcade racer and unlocking stuff.

The Switch version is great.

Excellent news. I’ll be getting this on Switch first thing tomorrow then!

It is, but not massively discouraging - especially when there are boost surfaces right after the curve.

In fact, it reminds me a bit of Quantum Redshift on Xbox which was supposed to be a Wipeout killer but which didn't penalise wall sliding/riding enough.

it slows you down enough that my partner doesn't want to play this and go back to Cruisin, as she hasn't quite got the skills to drift every time.

it discourages me enough to make sure I drift well as I don't like the way it juddery slows down your car.

it's not discouraging in the way original Wipeout stopped you dead though, of course.

Yeah, they urgently need to patch out the rubber banding. In combination with my colission / jump issues that's infuriating. You can't make a single mistake on Medium, surely that's not supposed to be right.

Yeah, rubber banding in this is a killer. I can't even win the first race. Well I probably could but I'm too fucking annoyed at how perfect you have to be in the very first race of a Hot Wheels game, I'll go back when I've chillaxed.

Hope they patch that shit soon.

It would have been okay within a system that allows you to properly kick opponents off course or sent them into walls and slowing them down for good. As it stands, the 3 or 4 obstacles (small hurdles/walls that temporarily slow you down) on the tracks are a joke and trying to push them off track is way too risky (and most of the time not possible anyway) given the aforementioned zero margin for error.

This is really good fun.  The tracks are great, with some serious Re-Volt vibes going on and it looks glorious.

Normal mode has been just about right on the first handful of tracks but it's starting to feel a bit much.  Up until now I've been able to recover from a few bumps and the odd early catastrophic error (rolling over, flying off track etc) and still take first, but half a dozen tracks deep it's taking a damn near perfect run even for a third place. It's very stingy with the rewards so it's not even like you can upgrade a vehicle all that much to help keep pace. Definitely needs a bit of AI tweaking.

That's small fry though, this game is going to thrive on its community content.  I hope the player base take to it like they did the early Trackmanias.

Fuck me this is quite a challenge.

I've started on medium difficulty and am learning the rules and foibles as I go (foibles 🤗) but it's fucking difficult to get in the top 3 on any race.

Are the cars you get at the start random or pre determined? I got a toaster (brown bread), a chevvy and a pointy green thing that looks like it's quick, which it is, but handles like shit. The toaster has been the best so far.

Random then maybe. I got some long black and yellow dragstery thing, a weird looking green one and an ace little Fiat 500 which is what I’ve been using.

Edit - I realised last night that it’s by the same developer as Gravel. I absolutely love that game.
