Battlefield 2042

Undoubtedly loads but I wonder how much EA are actually bothered by it?

With no attempt at a single player campaign, and the inclusion of Portal (Easily the best part of the games), this is obviously an attempt to introduce a long term Battlefield online platform, which will only develop further from here.  So while it is nice to have masses of people willing to fork out to buy your game is it really necessary in what they are aiming for?

I predict pretty substantial patches this side of Christmas, followed by new content and a quick release onto EA Access early in the New Year, once they have mopped up any Xmas purchases they can attract.

Starting to settle in a bit now and though I am having lots of fun, some of the maps are hopelessly unbalanced. Some of them barely come up in rotation as well.

I seem to be stuck in a Kaleidoscope/Manifest/Renewal hell, with the occasional bout of Hourglass thrown in to tease me. Orbital has never come up, Breakaway has twice, and Discarded only once.

When a match ends, it doesn't just auto-rotate with the same players - instead you get dumped back into the general player pool and off you go again. As a result, I've ended up on the same map, and the same side, multiple times in a row. The game desperately needs a server browser.

Hourglass seems well balanced, and is fun to play until you get to the C flags and then it goes a little bit downhill. Manifest is horrendous for the attackers, and with just one channel of attack against B1 and B2, is a dull as fuck meat grinder most of the time. I've had one match get past that point.

Kaleidoscope is hell on earth for the defenders, until they back to C2, at which point they all just stare at the lift doors and murder anyone who dares come up. Boring.

Renewal is alright. I like A1/A2, though the solar farm falls in seconds, every single match. B1 is an automatic loss. C1 and C2 puts up a good fight and then you're just done. Very flat though.

Breakaway is the best map by far, though I've spent no real time on Discarded at all.

You don’t need a lift….you need a hovercraft!

I find the skyscraper points a bit limited.

Normally you would expect there to be a collapsed building next to it which would open up a hilariously convenient way in for any attackers but it’s just lifts, choppers and gaming the system with hovercraft.

I hope it’s not too long before we get a new map, I feel like we need one every month.

Im guessing the time line is more like every 3 months.

Is all the above on Conquest. Not really touched that as Breakthrough has my attention at the moment.

Now up the dizzy heights of rank 18. I feel the jump to 128 player's is perhaps not the best idea. Like some have said if you don't get in a vehicle it's sometimes a good hike before you fire a shot.

Destruction 3.0 seems to have been dialed back somewhat. I remember in Bad Company 2 you could bring the house down literally. The wind thing is a bit lame.

I'm only playing Breakthrough.

Tried to hovercraft up a 'scraper at lunch and despite getting vertical against the wall it would not lift. Have they dialled it back?!

128 players sounded like a fantastic idea on paper and I was so excited to see what it would bring but it just hasn't worked. It strikes me that a lot of the technical issues are related to the doubled player count (heavily CPU-bound on PC for example) and they've had to tone down things like the destruction to compensate and I don't think it's worth the trade-off.

They've also clearly struggled to design maps that accommodate 128 players and still flow well which is my single biggest issue with the game. Everything's been stretched out and you're left with these bland, wide open fields of death-trap nothing to traverse between frequently lacklustre objectives. The best Battlefield maps would have multiple points of entry into objectives with vehicle lanes, cover for infantry and a coherent connection to adjoining capture points. There's very little of that in this game and there's no way that the jumbled mess of Breakthrough as it currently plays is what they envisioned. In that regard I think they bit off more than they could chew and no longer have the talent in the studio to implement the vision they were going for.

Ah the cycle of Battlefield games. They come out, everyone calls the newest version shit and say the previous version was better, then things get better, everyone says they are happy, New game comes out, everyone hates and says the previous version was better amd so on.

This happened with BF3,4,One and Five.

Just had another hard crash om Series X. Everything freezes and the Xbox shuts off after 10 seconds.

Managed to play a bit with the PP. Much lower damage than any of the first two AR but way more lethal at all ranges. Weapons balance is off by quite a margin.

From BF3 to BF5, the community, I agree. However this feels different.   They can patch the bugs, make improvements and I’m sure many will be happy but for me, specialists are not BF.

The series has been built on dynamic, squad based gameplay at its core which has been discarded by the current developers.

Voice chat?

Scoreboards?

I fondly remember my clan on BF1942 and BF2, which is many years ago.  Series evolve and innovate and I’ll always support that so don’t want you to think I’m against change. It’s just I have so many great memories with this series.

Thinking I’m coming across as just a grumpy old man and this game isn’t aimed at me and that’s fine and if your enjoying BF 2042, cool.

But this ain’t Battlefield.

I’ve played a lot of this over the last week and ultimately found it hard to stop playing although there are genuine issues. Getting to know the maps makes a huge difference although the 14 mile run at the start of each game of conquest is insane. The operators and the mix & match load outs appeal to me as I’m endlessly experimenting. Then again, that whole system is clearly another EA cash grab. Ultimately you are often better off with a DMR although the PP-29 is shockingly OP and needs nerfed immediately. On both PS5 and PC I often get the same bug in which I can’t change my weapon load out. This happens in every other game. The PC version however has far more severe problems and it’s a badly optimised mess. I’m certainly not playing it on anything apart from console from here on.

I guess I’m in for the long haul and it’ll probably be Portal that is the success story.

I think rather than it being nerfed, the other guns just need fixed. I would love for the assault classes to actually work.

Instead of nerfing the PP-29.. can you not just use it seeing as it can be added anywhere?

I gave up on assault rifles, struggled to hit anything at launch so gave up...for someone who prefers running around on foot in amongst it... smgs were the best option from the start.

If you are a sniper (not calling you a sniper...scenario here)... why would you be worried about the PP-29, you shouldn't be going toe to toe.

Haven't tried a shotgun, never liked them in battlefield but they seem to do the business, LMGs I try to avoid them as they slow you down but have been destroyed by them.

So, yeah, if you aren't a sniper, just put the PP-29 on until assault rifles are any good...dont make the PP-29 as bad as the other guns...then what are people going to use...3 clips to get 3 kills with an assault rifle...exciting

I played a few rounds on Breakthrough yesterday, my first time on the game after an hour or so on the beta.

Initial impressions were poor. The first map I got a bug where I couldn’t redeploy and had to quit the match. The next match I could see the map, but I wasn’t able to spawn in.

After that though, the next few rounds worked as expected, and I enjoyed it more than the beta. None of the maps have excited me especially yet, but I’ve not played on all them and only once on the ones I have, so I’ll give them time.

I think my main grumble so far is the ease with which attackers can get behind defenders line, with me getting killed from behind almost as soon as I’d left the spawn in some cases. It left me wishing for auto AA turrets or more extensive out of bounds areas. Again though, early days.

Quick question… when passenger in the Little Bird in the spotting seat, what does the secondary function do? It made a beeping noise, but I had no idea what it meant?

Had two good games of Conquest earlier today. Running with the PP makes life as infantry much more enjoyable.

Played another game just now where it once again crawled to a halt mid match. Running at 20 fps for a good 5-10 minutes. I think it might be weather related and not to the big tornado thingy.

I thought it was agreed that having a apotting mechanism without letting anyone know they are spotted is a bad thing.

The spotting grenade makes Amy form of PTFO bloody annoying as everyone is farming XP with them. Even getting near an objective without at least 10 enemies knowing exactly where you are seems impossible.

I'm playing on series X, and have only played a couple of rounds so far. One of my main problems is actually with the controls, which feel off. Putting grenades on up on the d-pad by default for example feels odd and like it was only done because of the (in my opinion) useless ability to change gun attachments mid spawn.

I've no issue with not knowing when I'm spotted, but the proximity grenade being available to every specialist and the proximity it seems to be set to is absolutely game breaking. That, coupled with the recons passive spotting via the drone has completely fucked Breakthrough.

A baffling design decision.

God, the menus on this are just so obtuse. Given they're clearly leaning into the gamification of progression coupled with a Battle Pass/Seasons model, it's painfully difficult to actually figure out where you are up to with the base progression, what's coming next, what challenges you should focus on etc. It's pretty shit.

Had my first game of Hazard Zone and, within 3 minutes of spawning in, we were wiped by AI opposition. We'd taken cover by fuel tanks, y'see, and they blew them up and we all burned to death.

Tried the custom FFA mode - given the size of some of the maps, even smaller ones, it's shocking how terrible the spawns are - right in the path of another player for instant death. As bad as anything COD can throw up.

Whilst it is nice to actually be able to hear footsteps too, the audio placement is messy.

The menu system is overly complex for me, I've no idea WTF is going on half the time

Other than that, I believe it will get better in a few weeks or so, but its by no means a travesty.

I'm finding this game headache inducingly complicated. I am supposed to be able to choose what weapons and things I want here, or am I just blocked for some reason? Tried x2 different matches with this and gave up

Think it's a bug, I had it the other day where I couldn't change anything. Thankfully it was back to normal the next match and I've not had it since, don't think I did anything to fix it.
