Battlefield 2042

I'm waiting for the December patch now - have all but downed weapons for any level of serious play. I'm not confident it'll fix it though, as I think the maps are actually its biggest issue.

Interesting thing from playing with bots; Breakthrough has different arrangements on it per map. I do wonder if they could rejig the current ones to be more dynamic and offer better lines of attack.  I suspect they can remove/add capture points at will.

The breakthrough spawns and A flags are awful on some of the maps. As defenders you're getting hit by rockets from aircraft as soon as you spawn in and the enemy ground vehicles can get to the flags insanely quickly too. Plus there is way too much space for attackers to flank behind the flags - they seem to be able to get way too far into the defender's space.

The maps are very uninspiring too. I wasn't that happy with most of the BF V maps, but they feel like masterpieces of inventiveness when compared to the 2042 maps.

2nd update's out everyone. 5.08GB (on PS5). The abridged notes from the BF website are...

Weekly missions coming, new game modes for Portal, new rules editor thingies, UI improvements, and "over 150 individual fixes, small changes and improvements"

A further balance and bug fix patch is coming in another week or two.

Playing Breakthrough in Solo is a pretty good way to quickly unlock stuff. It's pretty much easy-mode. The enemy bots are like zombies - no problem in small groups, but quite dangerous in large numbers (although this is countered by the ineptness of your own friendly bots when trying to take awkward flags - the only way I could successfully take flags atop skyscrapers was to call in a tank onto a neighbouring tower and clear off the enemy crowd from a distance. Otherwise my own bots would just get killed instantly when coming up the elevators in pointlessly small numbers).

Despite this, I've found that I still can't use helicopters effectively. Even without anyone launching AA missiles and no enemy aircraft in the sky, I still can't hit shit. I've no clue how to correctly aim rockets when moving - they go nowhere close to where the HUD would indicate. Even if I'm pretty much hovering in place it's still exteremely difficult to land hits on target, and the minigun is even worse!

Smart play! Would the 40mm on the Wildcat be more effective? (not sure if it has the range to do skyscraper to skyscraper combat though)

I had another solo game at lunchtime today and spotted that you can increase the difficulty lever and choose the map you want to play on, which I didn't realise before. The maps are different to the standard multiplayer versions too, I think. I managed to get about 10 weapon upgrades in the single round.

I don't have the Wildcat available to drop yet, but that would be super effective (until it gets nerfed).

I hate to say it but I think this is battlefield coming to an end -

It show's where the priorities lie with this game moving forwards and it's not something I can see me enjoying which is a shame as i've played the series for quite a while, even enjoyed BF1 & BFV and this is just falling off a cliff edge.

The game has so many issues, I was going to jump in and try the update this evening but this santa outfit bollocks has just put me right off.

It's not a surprise though, is it? The class system being replaced for something like CoD Warzones operators is such a ridiculously misjudged decision I almost want Dice and EA to fail. They should be leaning into what made Battlefield Battlefield, but they're concentrating on monetising bullshit like this. Almost everything about the philosophy behind this iteration of the game is so spectacularly fucking dumb.

They're copying CoD, but even if you're in the market for wacky Christmas skins, it looks like shit. Compare the quality of that model to last year's CoD offerings.

Vince Zampella knows what he is doing but I don't think that will matter.

I really think BF is fucked. The higher ups in EA want that microtransaction money and no amount of great developers or directors is going to change that.

DICE has been tech heavy and design light for eons.

Interesting to see US Protestant style work ethic finally bulldoze DICE’s Scandi spirit, and in some ways I think this move will work in the short term - until the new team fails to deliver and they then decide to just shutter the IP for good.

Hate to say I told you so, but...

You could see that this series was headed down the EA shit chute and likely to follow their depressingly predictable studio ruination when DICE started haemorrhaging key staff following the release of Battlefront 2 and Battlefield V. It's just not the same studio anymore and the direction they took 2042 only hammered that fact home. They're chasing that CoD/Apex MTX money train with everything they've got and I think you'd have to be hopelessly naïve to think that the series will flourish as a result. I'm sure plenty of diehard fans will continue to insist that the shit EA are shovelling down their throats still tastes like ice-cream though.

I have zero interest in a narrative-focused Battlefield game or any free-to-play spin-off driven by cosmetics and skins sales. Vince Zampella has a strong pedigree but Battlefield was very much its own thing that was created by a core group of developers who understood just what made these games tick and how to provide a large-scale, tactical and squad-based experience that couldn't be found elsewhere. Who knows, maybe under his guidance the series will find its mojo again but somehow I doubt it.

Let's hope that the DICE alumni who opened Embark Studios in Stockholm produce something that is worthy of the series' former best but the warnings that I was given about the future of the Battlefield series have proven to be sadly prescient based on everything we're seeing and hearing today.

BF1 still kicks ass and BFV is still trucking along too, so at least while the servers for those are still up and running the old magic can still be had. Such a shame to see one of my all-time favourite games run aground in such fashion though. 😟

Yeah I am reverting back to BF1 & V, I think battlefield is done. One thing that was suggested is the fact EA have lost some of their big money licenses i.e. Star Wars, fifa, so they could be doubling down on the 2 main game series they have to try and make them as profitable as they can.

In doing that battlefield is a gamble and it's not a gamble I see paying off.

Sadly there's not really anything quite like what battlefield was, i'm not into Halo and I haven't really played COD for years. I've given hell let loose a go which is decent but very different, I need some other suggestions outside of old battlefield games ^_^

Going down the route of a battlefield universe will just result in many sub-par games that they will make a bit of money off initially because of the name but it's not sustainable.

I played this again last night with the update and it didn't really feel like much of an improvement, still so many issues. I.e. why put the server information in but still no way to select a specific server outside of portal?

Just yeah, I think it need's a big turn around this game else I think it will be the last battlefield I buy....

This new 'shared' Battlefield Universe they've announced, starting with a new game from Ripple Effect, sounds like EA still desperately trying to chase the tail of CoD. In particular I"d bet they're going to try and emulate the CoD/Warzone relationship where the latter changes based on what's going on in the current main game at the time. I suspect it'll be a Battle Royale and will be about as successful as all their other copycat attempts while further driving off the dwindling loyal Battlefield fans they have. Battlefield Firestorm couldn't have flopped any harder and Hazard Zone (lol that they made sure to insert the word zone in there) appears to be dead on arrival.

I was contacted by EA to complete a BF2042 survey. Took forever to do and as I appear to be the only person alive that enjoys the game I’m probably not the ideal candidate to provide them with information.

I’m on PS5 with cross play turned off so perhaps that has some bearing on my enjoyment of the game.

We've all forgotten they already tried this before with Hardline, shared menus, the BFV purchasable cosmetics and the like then?

None of this is a surprise.

Re; yesterday's update - loads of good QoL changes in there (medic distance etc), coupled with a new BF2042 Rush mode in portal are brilliant. The latter is immediately fun and addresses problems with the map size too, as they are fresh maps.

Looking forward to seeing the weekly missions.

I don’t think it’s the same thing at all, as with this ‘Battlefield Universe’ they’re talking about now the focus is on other studios expanding the narrative and story-driven elements of the franchise. An area of the game that no-one has ever cared about and seems completely counter to what the main thrust and appeal of the series has been up to now.

The elites in BFV were their first dipping of toes in the waters of cosmetics microtransactions but it wasn’t a feature baked into the fundamental design of the game in the way that 2042’s Specialists’ skins are.

The whole thing smacks of appeasing investors who are likely concerned at the very poor reception of the latest game and EA’s bean counters desperately wanting to have their own version of CoD and all the accoutrements of modern shithouse AAA crap that it comes with.

Maybe it will all turn out great but I can’t say it fills me with confidence and it’s not a direction that I nor many others were clamouring for when thinking of what could improve Battlefield. It’s all a far cry from what this series was best at and just gives the impression that they’ve completely lost sight of what made it so special in the first place.

Something I don't understand about this game. This has been present on both the SMG guns I've used so far...When it auto-reloads it misses a bullet out. Press the reload again and it puts it back

You'll notice I have a full 21 round clip which I unload on another player. Then the game automatically reloads the gun (I don't do this, unless you can turn this feature off) and it goes up to 20 - missing 1 off. I press the reload button, puts the missing round back in!

Played a quick game of Conquest 128 man earlier and realised my main issue is that it is just not very fun to play.

Hard to put the finger on one special thing but I think the main thing is the lack of fun and engaging firefights. Death is either by a PC sniper that you never saw or by a vehicle you never saw or heard.

Isn't that because you start with 20 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber? Then when you put the next 20 round mag in you have 1 in the chamber and 19 rounds left in the mag, until you swap a new mag of 20 in.

2042 is the first Battlefield to not feature a story driven campaign since 2008. It not having a campaign is more of a surprise than EA making more BF games with campaigns at this point.

I'm excited by other studios getting involved, they've just as much chance of delivering something good at this point. DICE have spent 3 games getting this wrong now (4, if we count the debacle that was BF4's launch and the subsequent fracturing of the community through over aggressive expansion plans).

That said; Rush on the 2042 maps is good. I love Rush!

You start with 20 in the mag and 1 in the chamber = 21

Empty gun = 0

Mag holds 20, so when you put the next one in and chamber the round, 19 in the mag and 1 in the chamber = 20

Reload without firing replaces the mag with 19 in but leaves 1 in the chamber, so you now have 20 in the mag and 1 in the chamber = 21

This feels like it should be a question in a maths quiz in Texas.
