Add some spice: Extra time with snipers.

Each team has a special forces sniper on the roof equipped with tranquillisers. They can shoot 1 dart per minute reducing players till its just keeper vs keeper.

Bonus to this: a team can elect to swap their tranquillisers for live ammunition, but they only get one bullet and a member of the squad has to take the shot.

A 5-shot penalty shootout before the match... another at half time... another at full time... one after the first ET period, then another one at the very end. That's 25 shots per team, spread throughout the game! That way you get the benefits of the idea of doing it before the match, but a team that wins the first shootout can no longer just aim for a draw at the end of 120 minutes, because the situation could change based on the later shootouts!

Penalties as they are now... but the first pair must be keeper vs keeper!

Penalties... but instead of 5 shots before sudden death, it's 11, to make it more likely that you'll go through the whole team!

Penalties... but the team on the pitch can't get involved; only the unused substitutes can take them! (Yes, even the goalkeepers!)

I am serious about some of these ideas, but joking about others. BUT WHICH ONES??? :sherlock:

I like the xG idea - post match phone ins would definitely move up a notch in quality

'Hi Adrian, long time listener first time caller, I'm ringing to say I'm disgusted at Sterling last night taking a low xG shot from the edge of the D as if he'd moved one step to the left the resulting shot would have carried 0.15 more xG meaning we'd have gone thru at the end of Xtra time instead of losing. I'm also disgusted at UEFAs use of the Opta xG model which has always been very poor and over rewards close range shots whilst ignoring defensive pressure on the man, especially when compared to the more advanced statistical models available from other sports science/data providers'.

'Over to you guys then, let us know via Twitter or email which statistical model you feel best represents shot quality taken in the modern game - are Opta all that ?'
