Mount & Chillwell confirmed as needing to isolate until next Monday, which will miss the next 2 games I believe now.

Think there may be a bit of politicking going on there and setting a good example, not sure how they have to yet the Scotland team are all still allowed to play - what did they do with Gilmore after the game exactly ?

If we finish 1st or 2nd in the group, we'll play either next Monday at 5pm or Tuesday at 5pm so they should be okay for the last 16 fixture.

PlatiniLOL he's long gone.

Euro 2024 will be the same 24 teams, in Germany.

Shows how much attention I pay to things  He did try pushing for 32 teams though, I didn't imagine that, right?

Yeah I recall he did. Then he was caught lying about doing "work" for FIFA and banned, so I take anything he said in the past with a massive pinch of salt 😆

The format is pish with these 3rd place teams going thru but it's the way competitions are heading to ensure that the TV co's get all the biggest teams thru even if they are crap.

It's like the new champions league format where there are a couple of hundred games lasting 3-4 months and you just lose the champions of Azerbaijan and the 6th place team from Turkey who drop into the new 3rd tier competition.

It may keep the bigger teams alive longer but it removes a lot of tension from the early stage as it's almost impossible to go out with a lot of what would have been early plane home fodder making it into the KO stages. I know their fans will like that but its a bit like getting a special effort ribbon on school sports day.

I don't think fans of any team want the new horrible CL format do they? I certainly don't, it'll make it even duller (and it was already pretty dull) than it was until the knockout stages.

He's such a sleazy maniac.  And a general disgrace.  Time to Liverpool fans rushing in to defend this piece of work in 3...2...

It’s been reported that they had a 25-minute conversation with him in the tunnel after the game. Which is frankly a bit silly and you would have thought probably outside the protocols the team had set up.

Silly indeed, but not as silly as expecting people to believe that no other Scottish player had even more significant contact with him.

The keeper should have grabbed that boot off him and thrown it into the stand.

Mount and Chilwell will be out if England finish second, but able to play if we top the group.  If we finish third, it would depend on other results.

It's ridiculous that two England players (who have both had negative tests since the Scotland match) have to isolate but no Scottish players.  I don't want Scottish players to have to isolate either, but they will have had far more contact with Gilmour than a 25-minute conversation, and the chances of them having contracted and then spreading Covid are far more likely.  It's kind of bizarre.

Chilwell is not a huge loss as Shaw is a better player anyway, but Mount is a key player for England these days.  There's no-one else who can quite do the same job as him, contributing defensively, playing clever forward passes, and scoring goals.  I hope we go the positive route when replacing him and put Foden in there, which will allow Grealish to come in to one of the attacking positions.  I suspect we'll go with Bellingham.  I'd have Bellingham alongside Rice instead of Phillips, personally.

Yeah, if the Scottish team can stay in the tournament, those 2 England players can.

But those are the rules and they would have KNOWN that.

it's insane that whoever sat next to Gimore on the coach to the ground, in the changing room etc are not isolating but the English 2 are - you only get a good message out about taking isolating when coming into contact with plague carriers seriously if it's consistent. This does more harm than good with its daft approach.

Mount is a loss for the knockout game after if he's still required to isolate but there might have been reason to rest him in this game anyway. This is the last opportunity to play unused players in a game with nothing riding on it, I think there's little chance Southgate uses Saka, Sancho, Calvert Lewin as late subs in games against top opposition when he wouldn't against Croatia and Scotland. Bellingham too. I think he needs to allow them to impress to give him more options later on because he doesn't seem to trust any of them/has so much faith in Kane/Sterling/Rashford/Rice/Phillips.

Guardian build up blog put this: 'So, who comes in for Mount then? Bellingham? A rejig to get more than one of Sancho, Grealish and Foden on the pitch? Frankly, I’ve given up trying to work out what the best England XI is; any thoughts?'

I put in the comments: I'd give Kane a rest and play Foden as false 9. Bellingham in place of Phillips, Sancho right, Grealish left. Saka on for Foden at 60 minutes, Grealish moves to no10, Rice off at 60 for Calvert Lewin, Bellingham moves to dm.

and someone replied: it's a football game not sadler's wells

bit of a google...oh i see..

Foden centrally and Sancho on the right i would have thought was certain. Here's a familiar espn voice entertainingly responding to Sancho not getting any minutes:

In terms of bafflement, feels a bit like Low not calling up Sane in the last world cup in terms of comparable styles of play and great club seasons not previously transferring to the national team, though Sane's attitude apparently was held against him.

I know people do like to hate on Southgate and i don't because i can't be bothered really, but looking at his managerial stats it's not often i see a manager in real life with a lower win percentage than me on pro evo online. I struggle for 35% in every release, when you factor in lag, only 10 minutes not being enough time to score sometimes, going against Bayern every other game when you're playing as Newcastle etc. Also low win percentages are usually in short term roles with few games, but to have 29.8% in 151 games at Middlebrough...then again Hogdson at Palace in 162 games where he's done a solid job finished on 33.3%...

Obviously he's thoughtful and a genuinely nice person when we could have ended up with a boor like Alladyce, and in terms of the extent of his niceness might have to overlook how at the forefront of his memory is of Mings trying to kill players with stamps to the head, but..i don't know who else could take over the job really.

On the earlier topic of things wrong with the 24-team tournament, I don't think there's an argument against it stronger than playing 36 matches to eliminate just a third of the teams playing. Though at least in that respect, it's not the current Copa America which is playing 20 matches just to get rid of two teams.

I suspect the truth of it is that if they were adhering to the rules as stringently as England are, most of the squad would be in isolation and and they would have to forfeit their final match.

I also think that the only reason England are making a big show about being strict though is because the FA are worried about the final being moved elsewhere, otherwise I'm sure they'd be brushing it under the carpet too.

That said, it all seems a bit silly to me when the players are testing negative. The idea that Mount and Chilwell might miss the last 16 game even if they continue to test negative over the next few days is pretty ridiculous.

It's daft to conflate club and international statistics - there's so much of a difference between the two roles. Can't quite work out where an online Pro Evo stat fits into any of it either tbh.

Also I know that there's a few under 20s but at this stage surely most of them have been vaccinated (with one jab at least), right?

When there was talk of ensuring that the squad were fully vaccinated before the tournament, some of the same people saying this (not here, I hasten to add) were asking why young professional footballers should get to jump the queue ahead of others.

Also, the vaccination programme has only just been opened up to under 40s, let alone down to the 18-30 range.  There has been a lot of disingenuous Government messaging about that.

I've seen a lot of talk of resting Kane and playing Foden as a false 9.

I don't think you can do that, if you're having Sancho and Grealish play because we simply won't have any penetration against a low block.

Like Sterling, Grealish operates in the half space (the gap between the edge of the area and the edge of the D), but is very different in his movement. He sits in the hole, creating. Sancho loves to play as a winger then break through the lines, but has done well at Dortmund with Haaling in front of him causing havoc.

In tactical discussions, there's always talk of starting formations (4-3-3 v 4321 for example), but precious little in how that looks in attack.

Foden as a F9 flanked by Grealish and Sancho... it'd look like this:

tactical-board_com.thumb.png.304913b246f8dd7e9bfeb5279769eafa.png

A very pretty diamond, but nothing up front. Bellingham, Grealish and Foden all trying to occupy the same space.

I think we desperately need Kane to play more forward, or if not, Calvert Lewin to be a battering ram.
