I think what he says about the impossibility of getting enough chips for new hardware is true. I'm not sure if I agree with him at the start, however, where he talks about how it would be impossible to have a 4K console in a Switch form factor with only one small fan. I agree that the idea of a 4K Switch at the moment is pretty unfeasible, but what about phones and tablets outputting in higher resolutions, with no fans whatsoever?

Yeah, the video is pointless, he’s just explaining the business reasons why Nintendo are sticking with old hardware, which are obvious to anyone.

 

But Nintendo’s profits are irrelevant to the reasons everyone wants a Switch that can do 4K - namely the machine is graphically tired and underpowered.

A Switch that did 4K would have to be four times as powerful, just to play games that otherwise look and play exactly the same.

They wouldn’t look the same, they’d be in 4K. And a Switch that was four times as powerful would probably run a lot nicer.

Let’s be real, supply issues aside there is no reason they couldn’t make it work. But if they can sell the same machine to people who already own one by making the screen a little bit nicer without doing anything else worth mentioning, then that’s what the business will do.

 

I mean look how many people shelled out for one that had a marginally better battery, or one that was smaller and less functional! Nintendo are no mugs, that’s for sure - whether the same can be said of their customers is another matter entirely.

A resolution boost’s not nothing,* but there’s a reason people were talking about DLSS as the console’s route to higher resolutions. Whether they end up using that, whatever they land on is going to be reasonably power efficient and cost effective, but it’s not going to satisfy people who feel the Switch should be closer to the Xbox Series S in performance or graphical fidelity. A Switch successor will still be a case of visual design skill within seemingly obsolete hardware.

I’ll save you the trouble: you can get a computer to hallucinate better games graphics really efficiently, by tying it to a chair and forcing it to look at good and bad game graphics for the subjective equivalent of millions of years.

This is often thrown up - but the reality is those phones and tablets don't offer peak performance for any decent sustained amount of time - they run hot and then throttle. Switch does neither of those things and offers consistent, sustained performance.

A Switch that’s close to a Series S is a pipe dream. We’ll get a new Switch in a few years once the tech is there to make something cheaply that sits between an Xbox One/PS4 and Series/PS5. I said plenty of times that Nintendo are not going to produce a 4K Switch. It’s not their market and the jump in costs in game development would be too massive  for them to simply throw this feature around. You’ll see Nintendo produce a 4K console when/if 4K TVs are in every home, for now it’s still the preserve of the tech heads and those with a bit of cash splashing out on the latest TV. 
 

If people are looking for 4K gaming they are already covered by Microsoft/Sony, and those wanting 4K gaming generally are a different market to Nintendo’s. This forum is an outlier with people wanting to spend money on multiple 4K enabled consoles. Either way I’m still happy with the Switch and don’t care about graphics and frame rates etc, just good games which it has many of. If 60FPS and 4K gaming is the bar you’ve set for games then simply the Switch isn’t aimed at you but Sony and MS have your needs covered.

Also why is everyone so obsessed with 4K? Give me 1080p with HDR over 4K any day of the week, and you’re more likely to hit 60fps with 1080p too.

 

A 1080p handheld screen with HDR for the Switch 2 would be lovely.

Yeah I don't get 4k on a mobile-sized screen. I'm not a 4k enthusiast anyway as I don't even have a 4k TV, it just seems to make more sense of adding more grunt for performance over outputting at 4k. If either are possible given the form factor, obvs.

Given that Sony's 4K console is one of the largest ever made I think expecting a 4k switch is a bit mad. I'd totally settle for a machine that could run BOTW2 at the standard res with a solid framerate.

4k is standard on TVs now. 
 

HDR is a con in gaming, I’ve rarely seen examples where it makes much difference.

No-one cares about 4K in handheld mode, they want it so the Switch looks good on 4K tellies.

No, 4K is the con.

 

HDR is phenomenal when used correctly and with a decent TV (I’m thinking Metro Exodus rather than Red Dead Redemption 2), and makes a huge difference compared to 4K.

Got one pre ordered from Game and think it's time to sell the wii u. 

I had pre ordered a switch at launch but cancelled as nothing new i wanted to play and got Botw for wii u but this time will go for it.

4K is standard in TVs now, yes, but it feels like a white elephant like 3D was. My current TV bought all the way back in 2015 needs replacing, but barring the diagnostic function, I’ve never even used it to display any 4K, as far as I’m aware. I’d be quite happy to replace the borked TV with a 1080HD set if you can still buy brand new ones with a decent refresh rate, if all being honest.

60 FPS > 4k > HDR. 
 

That is what devs should be aiming for. Frame rate is king. 
 

Also it’s hard to believe anyone hasn’t used 4k who has a compatible tv. Do you not have Netflix, Disney or even iPlayer?
