You probably need to use the newest ability that you unlocked (bombs?) to get there.

That's the thing, it really feels like I should have bombs to get through these walls but I don't have them. Should I have them after finishing the witch boss?

I can’t really understand how anyone can get lost on the critical path in this. And I spent the first half of “far too linear” Metroid Dread constantly confused.

Whenever you’re lost just go back to the Lost Cemetery (clue’s in the name) and head to the crow. He’s at the summit and there are a fair few signs pointing in that direction knocking about.

He’ll not only show you a picture of the entrance but also tell you what direction to head in.

I think a map might have been nice to mop everything up once you’ve finished but I’m an idiot with no sense of direction and I genuinely didn’t get lost once in the main game.

Yeah I must be doing something wrong. I just spent another 30mins looking around the cemetery. Found myself back at that little place with the fisherman who gives hints but not for the main quest. I honestly have no idea where this mystical crow at the summit is that tells you things? When I go to the bottom right, I eventually come across a bomb wall or a hookshot cross etc. I've come across a zillion bomb walls now.

I do have the fireball but have not come across a non activated fireball device for hours now.

@Capwn

You've beaten the witch under the manor house, right?

You need to (hint spoiler)

Spoiler

use your new-found ability somewhere in the Lost Cemetery in order to proceed. You need to use it in a similar way to how you used it in the manor. As mentioned, look towards the bottom-right corner of the cemetery.

Not sure? I’ve beaten the witch boss (urn one) is there another one? I didn’t get any abilities.

When you say bottom right of cemetery, are you just referring to the overgrown woods area after the sliding elevator thing? I’ve explored everywhere there but I need the explode wall ability once I start getting deep into it. I get to around the camp where they go on about a horn.

That's where you should be, yeah. You don't need the explode wall ability there.

Spoiler

What else explodes in that area?

Yeah I’ve been using them to explode walls but this one I cannot Get to shoot me

Hmm. I can't remember the specifics, but I think you have to find a way to shoot them from afar. That's definitely the way to go, though - there's not much point going back to the cemetery right now.

Ah finally figured it out, there was a little area I hadn’t come across and it eventually led me to the horn.

if I hadn’t been told here to go to bottom right of cemetery I would have given up exploring these out lands over and over and would have probably gone back to the hub, looking in the witches manor or factory or whatever.

really don’t understand the logic of this game’s path finding, for me it’s mostly just going in circles finding little new areas until you find one that opens up the game.

Doing well at this now, already killed the 2nd main boss and have already opened up the big door for the next area too so now I have all 4 abilities.

Looking back I think I know what went wrong, it's now very clear to me that there is a  'system' here somewhere. I'm sure some people see this system very early on but for me it wasn't until the tail end of boss 2.

- Black and white area is main hub

- Then there are like 3 connected hubs for each boss that each leads to a big door that gives you a new ability

- Go back to the 'boss hub' and use ability to go deeper within and find the boss.

I think that's it but to be honest am still not even entirely sure this is correct. Like what is it that leads you to the boss hub? Is it that the 3 boss hubs are interconnected? So like Witch hub is the lost cemetery which eventually leads to overgrown area (2nd boss) and then that area eventually leads to the 3rd boss hub?

I'd be really curious if anyone here can define the system if I'm wrong?

I haven't played it for a few weeks so I can't confirm precisely, but I didn't have your experience with the game at all. I felt like it was a very linear game and I was clearly guided at each step with the openness being an illusion. That being said, I played it over Xmas in long sessions so it was all fresh in my head, and I suppose I must have been quite systematic in how I cleared areas. I only had to keep a few outstanding places to check in my brain at once. I only had to look something up on the internet when I didn't spot how to get the zipline to the waterlogged area with the power ups I already had.

Now I've had a break, I'll probably go back to it tonight so I might find I'm lost now.

Black and white world is less a hub and more a kind of power up menu and area select screen. The Lost Cemetery is the real hub in the Firelink Shrine sense - there are paths from there that can take you anywhere you need to go but some require more skills than others.

Access to each boss requires you to have mastered a special power. The routine goes: find a way to the dungeon where you get the special power while getting a preview of the special power, find 4 souls of old crows in the dungeon in order to get the special power, use the special power on a door somewhere in the dungeon to access another level of dungeon, find boss room while getting the hang of the special power, beat boss, back to the hub.

I think it's slightly different for the last boss in that you don't get a preview of the skill but that's more or less the pattern.

I very much enjoyed this, got as far as below spoiler but have tapped out now

Spoiler

got to the final boss (lord of doors), I found all the shrines but needed a guide for the one in the castle and the cemetery, final boss is too much but a great game nonetheless

Arrrrgh, Was starting to enjoy this but the closing parts of the game are just awful.

Spoiler

I mean that thing where you have to fight the lord through multiple doors is possibly the worst thing since that Mario odyssey ‘proper’ ending level shit. Took me about 30 attempts. Now on the main battle and must have had over 30 attempts at that now. I get what to do, just slash slash slash roll etc etc but I find if some attacks start at a bad time there is no escape. It feels like pure luck.

Definitely not pure luck, I'm afraid. Keep going! The post-game stuff is great.

Yeah once you work out how to avoid the attacks (that’s what the various door bit before the main battle is for) you can finish it without being hit.

that’s what happened to me anyway. I really struggle with the first bit but when I learned how to avoid things the next bit was nice and easy.

but did it take 30+ attempts? I do understand generally how to avoid the 2 most annoying attacks;

Spoiler

Bulls - I go and run around in a circle in the outer edge. Though I still get hit around 30% of the time

Red streams - As soon as this happens I run as far away as I can, often I'm able to do this thing where I run away and then as it lands near me I go back again in a straight line. Again, usually works but sometimes the attack happens in an awkward spot where I don't have time to dodge.

So between those things, no matter how well I do, the longer the battle goes on the more I'm likely to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I have 5 health, all the weapons. Statistically the default red sword is the best as it's x1 damage with 3 swings. Axe/Big sword do more damage but less swings. So I should stick with red sword for best chances?

The bigger weapons have slightly better reach as well, I think. Might make it easier to dodge after taking a swing. I used the big sword when I did him.

Have you levelled all your skills up? The basic damage/speed ones and also the fire/bomb/arrow. With faster casting and boosted fire you can still get a few decent hits in when it's not safe to charge in and melee.

Finished this a few days ago over the course of a week, should've stretched it out a little longer really - it's a great game.

Spoiler

Bulls and laser (assuming you mean the targeted laser from the top), run in tiny circles in the very bottom right corner. As soon as the laser stops, move north. No bulls come down that way and you'll soon learn the timing to move away from him jumping down from the top.

I found the only difficult attack to be his jump & pink laser one - as soon as you see that coming get as far away as possible, then be moving to a different corner when he's in mid air to give yourself as much time as possible to dodge the spreading laser.

I'd also point out that you can reduce the time stunned when he does the clap thing by mashing X (I think) - it took me a while to realise that when I was fighting with the magic upgrade guys.

When using magic, I'd go with the fireball assuming you've got it upgraded. I might be wrong but although it feels like the bomb is more powerful, I don't think the game ever makes that absolutely clear (?) and as this fight is a game of attrition, in my opinion it's better to shoot off the quicker fireball and stay mobile and have it burn him for another hit.

Lastly, I would try not to be greedy with the swipes you put in on him. Better to swipe twice and the battle last five minutes rather than hit him three times to shorten it but take loads of attempts. Wait until you do it with the umbrella 😀

I have full strength, about 3 on magic , 3 on speed and 2 on melee. Yeah I have the updated version of the firespell, I actually don't use magic at all on that battle. Just melee.

Just to be clear, rather than the souls spent improving damage, speed, dodge etc (which I’m sure help) I mean, potential spoiler:

Spoiler

upgraded fire damage that keeps burning for a few seconds

In any case, there are definitely regular points where you can get the magic of your choice off at the doorman fight. Keep going!

Did it, yeah just needed to come back to it. Took 4 attempts. I still found it tough, one of those where I found myself not breathing in the final moments. Had 1 bar of energy left. Almost collapsed.

Gaming is so weird

I nearly bought this a while ago and was delighted when it arrived on Gamepass. Looks and sounds lovely but after playing for an hour or so it's a lot more Dark Souls than I was expecting and hoping for.

Thanks for the warning. Sounds far too hard for me
