(yes I’m being slightly non-serious - it would be quite a stretch to call Snowrunner a racing game)

I wasn't being entirely serous but the Forza engine would make a great off road game.

I think there’s probably some middle ground between your car getting stuck immediately as soon as you drive into a muddy field and having to wait for three hours for an angry farmer and the RAC to tow you out, and being able to drive a Ferrari F40 through a bog with little apparent loss of speed and control. I’m exaggerating a little bit, but I would love it if they differentiated the feel of off-road and on road racing a bit more - the immersion goes a bit for me when you can just drive a super-low track car with a body kit up the side of a mountain. It’d be great if, say, there were certain collectibles in rough terrain that you’d need an off-road vehicle to collect. Given the variety of terrain in Mexico, it would be great if your choice of car had more bearing on where you were able to go.

I understand where the "I've done Forza Motorsport and/or Forza Horizon" before thought comes from. Played a lot of Motorsport and 7 was the first one I was meh about, and only played it because it finally got added to GP. Briefly hovered on the EoL sale but didn't bother. Too similar to 6, which I spent a lot of time on. I was kinda there with FH4, too. I played 2 just before 3 came out, and then splurged on the ultimate ed for FH4, but felt a bit burnt out on 4.

To be fair to Playground, FH4 is actually excellent to dip in and out of, and they've added tonnes of stuff since launch which adds variety. It's still the "welp, off you go then..." which if you don't like, you don't like. But what they've done with FH4 makes me really look forward to 5.

But yes, I don't need a tow truck, but it would be good if there was some middle ground on being off road. I typically drive a WRX so that it doesn't matter where I am, but there are some fully paved roads (in reality) which are anti-McLaren, nevermind fields.

I do get what people are saying about the off road not being different enough, I get why it is like it is and its great to just point the car somewhere and drive over all of the terrain with no problem but It would be cool if you could customise something like an F40 and give it big truck tyres and silly stuff like that to drive it off road.

FH4 was my first Forza Horizon game since the first one and i'm still playing it now, I absolutely love it. But I tried playing FH3 and couldn't get into it, it was too similar to 4. I hope that doesn't happen with the new one.

I mean you say that but really if you're racing 4x4s or rally cars in a hypercar off road, you're going to have a bad time. It works the way it does because otherwise you'd be changing cars all the time trying to drive in freeroam.

I think it depends where you are with the series.

I have been playing Forza since the original release on the Xbox where it did some pretty revolutionary things in terms of customisation of cars, physics, intelligent AI (well more intelligent than GT at the time). Forza Horizon I played since the first on the 360. I was never that impressed with it to be fair - its a good game but not keen on open-world racers I guess. Love the detail lavished on the FH series though and 4 is an amazing world to explore.

So yes I probably have burn out and prefer circuit based racers in general. Think the last racing game for me was DriveClub that got the balance perfect.  Great wide open roads with lovely scenery set over various parts of the world and circuit based. Of course PGR4 is still my favourite of all time. Loved the balance of everything in that game, music, visuals, locations, events, car classes etc. If they just made a new version of this with true dynamic environments at 60fps and decent res that would be perfection for me! :D

Of course I shouldn't really complain - the fact the MS and Playground are investing in the arcade racer genre at all is great.

Boo! It only has the old version of my car. pre order cancelled!

It does seem like we get very few new cars in these things. The one Fiesta there is a generation old, the newest Golf R is 7 years old, the 2 (count em) Vauxhalls are 5 and 16 years old.

There are no 2021 or 2022 model year cars at all. There's a grand total of 9 from last year and 15 from 2019.  So that's 24 cars that couldn't have been in FH4.

No Tesla either, which is strange. They appeared in FH3 but not since, my lad will be gutted!

presumably the raytracing in forzavista mode was too accurate: it showed tight panel gaps and therefore their models were rejected as being unrealistic.

Sure you'll be able to buy some car packs again at some point.... :)

I'm in the ideal situation of loving the Horizon series but knowing as much about cars as I know about the mating rituals of a gnu.

So basically, I really don't care what cars are available - it won't change my enjoyment of the game one iota.  My petrol head best mate on the other hand....
