Yes it is a bit confusing, needs to be S2 but doesn’t need to be 998 but does need to be Audi. Doesn’t help that it’s early on in the game where new/lapsed players like me don’t quite know what’s going on.

There do seem to be bits of the game that aren't explained very well, just like in FH4 when they started this seasonal stuff. The seasonal objectives as a concept are mentioned on the radio sometimes, but it feels like they need a proper tutorial section for this side of the game, particularly as it's the one that will probably keep players going for years to come. Lots of new players won't even be aware of it.

Yeah, think it might be as they are so frequent and there is more than one on at once but there are not enough people participating in them atm.  Perhaps they need to merge them across several different sessions or something.  So far the best I've managed is to complete stage 2

Normally I'd agree that drum n bass is bleh, but in forza I find it one of my preferred stations. Just suits the mood.

It's incredibly bland. Same drum pattern in every song. One day a game will have a radio station of 93-95 jungle and I will play it until my dying day. 

 

I find the music especially irksome in this because I use the zoomed-out external camera and so it always sounds like it's playing somewhere else. In the car in front, a barn two fields over, my IRL next-door neighbour is humming it, stuff like that. I stick with Hospital because at least I can hear some of it.

Really fucking weird, that cars with my niece and nephew's gamertags would appear in any race I started, despite me knowing full well that they couldn't give less of a fuck about Forza. 

 

Spent hours on this last night/early hours of this morning, just off-roading around the place in my buggy.

Yes, the drum & bass selection in this is pretty bland. I was never a massive Hospital Records fan, bit too "liquid" for me. If they had a really good mid-90s jump-up station, or breakbeat hardcore, yeah that would liven things up a bit. But that's a middle-aged man talking.

Yeah aside from some nice liquid drum and bass tracks on the Hospital Records station the music selection is garbage this time round. It’s such a shame as usually it’s pretty good and Horizon Pulse was always a breezy, cheery accompaniment but they’ve really dropped the ball for some reason on this game. Even the classical radio station is disappointing. For me personally I’d love a decent electronic music station with some proper techno in it but Bass Arena is mostly American EDM shite and the DJ is a fucking tool.

 

Ah well, the rest of the game’s a masterpiece so I guess we can’t have it all.

 

The special Forza Edition Mercedes-Benz truck I got in a wheelspin absolutely annihilated every cross-country event I threw it at. The thing goes like shit off a shovel with a launch rating of 10 and is so massive that you can just shunt your way through anything in your path. I’m currently playing on Expert difficulty and won pretty much every race on my first go in that thing, including the cross-country mega-race The Trial. If you’re lucky enough to get it in a wheelspin then don’t sleep on it, it’s awesome (and makes you feel like the T-1000 hunting down John Connor, as I alluded to yesterday).

This game is clearly absolutely brilliant but I hate the presentation so much that it makes me not want to play it. Just one glimpse of my avatar emoting around a car before a race makes me vomit. The whole 'you're a rock star' sycophancy of everyone you meet or hear on the radio is like nails down a blackboard. I realise that this is entirely my problem but I just can't abide it.

The thing about the soundtracks in games like this is that integrated streaming makes it sort of irrelevant, in that you can just switch to the dirtiest drum & bass / Belgian beat / knobwave / spooky sound effects playlist you can possibly conjure up (catalogue of your streaming service notwithstanding). Obviously, there's a bit of faff involved in sticking it on - it would be great if the game let you designate a Spotify playlist as a radio station.

 

NFS: Hot Pursuit let you have your custom soundtracks as the default when you loaded the game up back in 2010, why can't you do that now?

I might be wrong but I don't think Spotify allow that anymore, I think the record labels put a stop to that as they want the game developer to license direct from them instead.

My annoyance with the soundtrack is that it doesn’t include Chvches and the pause screen doesn’t tell you what song is playing anymore. I play using chase cam so you can’t hear the music at all during a race if there are cars around you and you can’t hear anything at all if there’s a sandstorm.

I think integrating Spotify into the game as a radio station, but as I say I might be wrong, i've never used a music streaming service so I don't really know what im talking about, my knowledge is based on a discussion with a musician friend who has just had some of his music used in the new Far Cry.

It’s such a weird game. 
 

The driving is great and it looks lovely. Weather effects are awesome. The tracks and roads and jungles are mostly great and there is an incredible sense of speed in the right cars. The engine sounds are decent too. That’s the good stuff. 
 

Then every so often you get to a cut scene where the graphics appear to be from an old Xbox 360 game with shit character models and expressionless fans. The music and radio and fawning commentary also sucks so much, like brain breakingly bad, that I’m now putting on my own music while playing. That’s the first time I’ve done that with a game in about 20 years. The map screen is a cluttered mess. The game throws too much at you to start with, go here, do this, check out these accolades. Just chill out for fuck sake.  And then it keeps telling me I’m not connected at the top of the screen with a 10 second countdown because I assume the servers are bollocksed.
 

It just feels like it needed another few months in the oven before release. Maybe it’ll all get patched and sorted over the coming months. Currently it’s a solid 7/10, but with some simple improvements that could easily go higher.

You'd need to activate streamer mode, which cuts all out all licensed music.

Right on the D- pad until radio off. Radio volume to zero and streaming mode to on (bottom of audio settings) Not perfect as it still plays a default station that allows streamers to play music without getting copyright banned. Then whack Spotify on and play La Bamba.
