Currently it’s a solid 7/10

I'm predicting a [6] from EDGE. Honestly. The game is for the most part an extortionate amount of high-gloss fancy padding around a fairly mediocre racer. Strip away all the fluff and what's left is just not that great.

As a veteran FH4 player, this is going to be my approach to the icon soup and cognitive overload situation:

Regular race events:

  • only use cars I've won or been awarded
  • keep the cars stock, with the AI on 'highly skilled'
  • Play each event until I come first, thus unlocking the 'win' accolade for each race as I go

Story events:

  • Play each one until I've 3-starred it before moving on

Festival Playlist:

This will be where I spent most of my time, if it's anything like FH4. I'll attempt to complete the race and PR stunt events, delving into the car showroom to buy something that meets the restrictions if necessary. For the really tough races I'll make sure I get a decent tuned up car.

Credits are mainly for buying properties.

This is comfortably the highest rated game of 2021 on Opencritic. https://opencritic.com/game/11624/forza-horizon-5 and by quite some distance the highest rated platform exclusive on Metacritic. https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/year/all/filtered

Edge 5 incoming.

Do we care what the likes of Hobby Consolas, TheXboxHub and GameSkinny think about anything? Metacritic is a joke.

Turning the radio off in this is the ultimate protip. You can actually appreciate the sound design and your lovely brum brums.

For the first time in Horizon, I'm going manual gears and so I really need to hear the engine note. I did an event up the volcano last night and couldn't hear it bouncing off the limiter because the music was so loud towards the end, although just found out there's a music/engine slider.

I do like the selection of cars it gives before you race, though. Driving way more cars in this one and it's making the racing more interesting. Was totally stuck in my "Subaru for life, yo" way of thinking for FH4.

Interesting comments from folks about the game in general, though. On the one hand, I thought I was done after FH4. Like, apart from new scenery and refining the formula, where do you go from here? Mexico has helped considerably over the UK, but for FH6 I think they need a rethink. Maybe? The number of players may suggest otherwise. Perhaps I just need to go to the new Test Drive. But I haven't hit that limit here, loving this all over again and plan to rinse it.

What the fuck is that? Did the postman leave it in the rain?

It's the FH 5 limited edition controller.

The cover on the left thumb stick on my regular controller recently split and fell off making it a bit uncomfortable to use so am tempted to get one 😂

How does the playlist stuff work, then? Danger Sign, Runway, for example, says it has to be done in a Retro Sports car, of which I have 1. Below that there is a box that says S1:900, but I don't really know what that means. Some of the events allow me to view eligible cars, but not this.

So, I've done the event in my Fairlady Z, and ... nothing has happened. It hasn't checked off, and I didn't get the 2 points or wheelspin. I can't work out what I've missed.

For Forza Horizon 6 I think they should do an Alan Partridge driving game. A nice selection of mid-range saloon and estate cars like the classic Rover Vitesse Fastback, with walnut interiors and ABS as standard, you can equip your driver with suede driving gloves, pringle sweaters and petrol station sunglasses, then cruise around East Anglia to the sounds of Supertramp, Mike Oldfield and, if you're feeling really rockin', Status Quo. Back of the net. Target audience acquired.

Don’t forget the theme from Black Beauty.

From what others have helped me with today, I think it means you’ll need to use a car of type Retro Sports Car, in category S1 with a max rating of 900.

If it's like FH4, then there will be icons on the map for the Festival Playlist weekly events - white icon with red borders. Filtering for these is the easiest way to find them in the sea of icons.

You can see restrictions for each event on the map, and also on the Festival Playlist screen in the menus I think. If it's saying you need a Retro Sports Car S1, then you'll need to do the event in one of those. In this case it means you need a car of the type 'Retro Sports Car' and it's class (i.e how fast it is) should be S1. You can either buy a car that matches this criteria (again, use the filters for type/class when browsing the showroom), or you can take a car you already own of the type Retro Sports Car type and upgrade it to S1 at one of your houses.

They gave nine to the past two Horizons, can't see why they would suddenly drop to a six. Edge have always reviewed the series very much in line with the critical consensus.

Objectively wrong opinion here.

The dirt racing on this is the best fun I've had in a racing game in over a decade.

The long race around the outside of the whole map (Goliath?) is the closest thing to Outrun that's been released since Outrun 2 on the 360. I picked a Ferrari for it and it was amazing.

You can also just download someone else’s upgrade setup for the vehicle by going to the Creative menu. They’ll usually have names ‘mad speed, rally etc’ that describes what they are intended for and you can see the resulting stats before you apply it. It’s one of the best things about these games. I've never once bothered to upgrade a car myself.

a stock Enzo is surprisingly slow

Thank you, both. It's not possible to buy an S1, so it looks like I need to learn upgrading!
