Yes, because this rookie Nintendo lot don’t have a decent track record we can use for reassurance at all.

I mean, they really don't.

I'll still buy it, just as I did Samus Returns, but between the developer and the visuals I'm not going to let myself hope for greatness.

Honestly, some folks are so earnestly pessimistic it’s bonkers. Instead of innocent until guilty, it’s ‘shit until it’s a few years old and people are finally prepared to admit they were overly harsh and it was actually decent’.

Yeah well, I can point to AV1 for Happ, Other M for Sakamoto, and SR for MercurySteam. It’s not exactly rocket science to figure out their approaches to the genre.

And SR is a good game; it’s just not a very good Metroid. And I’m hardly talking from a first-time rodeo perspective here. This is the exact same stuff I got slung at me with Samus Returns.

Look I downright LOVE that Nintendo is giving Metroid another chance, but I’m not going to ignore the writing on the wall just because it’s my favourite franchise. I’m not a Zelda-fan. :explicit wink: There are some issues with SR that make it a lesser Metroid and so far Dread seems to have fixed exactly one of them, which is the start-stop nature of counters in SR.

AM2R, Axiom Verge, and Hollow Knight do Metroid better. Is it that odd for me to expect Nintendo to at least match those levels considering their resources available? Especially when they take almost two decades to do so? And after creating Zero Mission?

I'm hopeful for this, but surely everyone remembers how AM2R was light years ahead of Nintendo's own efforts with Returns? If literally one dude can *easily* outclass a big videogame company famous for the high quality standards of its software - then it's reasonable to question whether Nintendo is really giving this series the attention and/or developer it deserves.

Anyway, looking forward to this!

Not at all. But it IS odd for you to presume they absolutely haven’t within 30 mins of a new game being announced. Nintendo don’t go wrong very often. Occasionally yes, but on balance they get it right often enough that I think jumping to conclusions on this so early is being a bit, well, grumpy.

Or worries based on literally the previous game they put out, seeing many of the same flaws.

It looks like Strider and that wasn't bad looking. IMO the gameplay (dat parry, classic Metroid structure) and the horror concept really do it for me.

It is missing that layer of polish but it's not out yet so we'll see.

It looks a lot more appealing now it's not coming through a livestream, there's a nuance and shading that just wasn't coming through with the compression. (It looks better on Youtube with my my shitty laptop screen than it did on Youtube on my 4K telly.) I can see why someone made a PN03 comparison - it's often monochrome but in a sharp, stark way.

Well worth a re-watch.

Lots of story crap on the official site:

https://metroid.nintendo.com/news/#!/metroid-dread-report-vol--1--a-closer-look-at-the-reveal-trailer

Spoiler

The X is a terrifyingly lethal parasite that takes over organic creatures, mimicking them afterward based on their genetic information.

It once infected me too. But my life was saved, thanks to a vaccine created from the X's natural enemy: Metroids. Not only that, it made me into the only being capable of fighting this creature that threatens the galaxy. After a deadly battle with the SA-X, a copy of me at my full capabilities, I finally succeeded in wiping out the X, along with the planet SR388.

However...

One day, the Galactic Federation received video footage from an unknown source indicating that the X still lived. The Federation dispatched a special unit consisting of seven E.M.M.I. robots to the remote planet ZDR, believed to be the source of the transmission.

Soon after arriving on ZDR, the whole unit mysteriously vanished.

Does the X truly still exist? And just what is happening on ZDR? It's up to me, the only one immune to the X parasite, to go find out...

I'm super happy that Mercurysteam is getting the chance to work on an original Metroid.

They really changed so much in Metroid 2 for Samus Returns, and on the whole it worked very well.

Only Mercurysteam make Metroidvanias.

They totally fucked up their Castlevania games (Lords of Shadows 2 and Mirror of Fate) when Kojima productions was no longer involved though.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

One thing I'm liking already is that this is the first game in the 2D series that dumps the more colourful aesthetic for something more dark & brooding. Clinical even. A nice break from the 2D entries since Fusion, which all went with big comic book esque colour palettes to compensate for the small portable screens of earlier handhelds.

Well, now that John Linneman likes it my sense of aesthetic preference is completely overturned! Relatedly, I now also think Knack looks (and is) great, and can no longer enjoy Bloodborne because of its frame-pacing issues :(

I see John Linneman has been absolutely gushing about how this looks over on the DF stream! He think it looks visually incredible.

So who’s right? The Digital Foundry man or the miserablists of rllmuk?

I guess there's some technical marvel at work underneath I didn't notice, but it looked boring, and nothing special if the Metroid name wasn't attached to this.

I'm watching one of the streams and one comment that stands out about the game is that it doesn't look like it's mimicking Super Metroid for the umteempth time. I know many like to dump on Samus Returns & Other M(rightfully so I might add.) but what people tend to forget is that a lot of the problems in those games started in Fusion and carried over to Zero Mission as well. The increased emphasis on story being one thing.

But one thing that started in Zero Mission was the outright Canonization of Super Metroid for the blue print in terms of art direction for the series. And thus we get Other M and Samus Returns that try and mimic as many elements from Super. Samus's snot coloured armor from Other M comes to mind. SR going so far as to transform one of the most unique Metroid Entries into as bizarre Frankenstein of Super, Prime and RoS.

And then Dread, which seems to be avoiding all of it. Wonderfull breath of fresh air for a series that's been stuck to Super Metroid for so long. The Emmi's are clearly the idea of the SA-X but it seems to expand on the idea rather then just carbon copy it. It has its own visual identity distinct from other entries in the series (though clearly taking inspiration from other games like Portal). Also, no Ridley so far. Let's hope they keep that.

I'm glad some people share my slight reservations that this looked like Yoshi's Island 2 when compared to the original Yoshi's Island - can't put my finger on it, but just from looking at it, there's a whiff of "Nintendo second-party" about it.

I haven't seen the Treehouse footage yet, but it just looked quite bland and characterless in the reveal. As others have said, I was surprised it was announced for October as it looked like an early build.

However, I have to remind myself that games like Luigi's Mansion 2 and 3 were done by second parties and turned out great. Just that the most exciting thing about the reveal was "wow, it's Metroid 5" rather than "wow, that game looks amazing, I can't wait to play". The pleasure was from the announcement and a new 2D Metroid, not from seeing the game itself. Same goes for the AW remake really.

It’s amazing how some people come in to Rllmuk just to piss on other people’s opinions rather than having any of their own.

Like it, dislike it, it's no skin off my nose and at least it's something everyone can have a conversation about, but give this business about showing up in threads and calling people names for daring to dislike any aspect of literally anything a rest, huh?

Technically it might be competent, but it has no soul.

It's tough, nay impossible to replicate the look of the pixel games in 3D on a Switch I guess, although the Prime games managed to have atmosphere in spades.

This looks like a late-90s CG render, everything looks flat and lifeless.

I want my Metroid games to have heart.

I think I'd have preferred something that looked like Streets of Rage 4 instead of this dead art style.

Why not also give repeat and constantly posting of the same thing over and over a rest? It’s pretty much windmilling in a thread.

If you’ve only seen the live stream, I really do recommend looking at the video on YouTube again. It’s not artistically very different but - and this will sound like I’m taking the piss but I’m not - most of those greys are actually varied, quite nice Metroidy greys. I thought it must’ve been my imagination but looking at screen caps as the stream was in progress on live blogs, obviously the compression wasn’t being very kind to it.
