Metroid: Dread - October 8th

I do get what Cywhux has been saying - what would this game had played like if there was no Adam.  Now I'm at the end of the game, I think it would be amazing - but if I'd never played a Metroid before, if I'd never known that the lava area would probably need an item to get through.... I think I'd have really struggled with it.

TBH - I think most gamers would have, unfairly, bounced off it.  Just look at that David Jaffe video - and there's people who agree with him.

Maybe I’m massively conditioned by Metroid games of the past but I don’t think needing something for the lava needed telling, what with lava being lava and everything.

you just need to look back a couple of pages to see someone complain that they felt they had to tank it through lava to get somewhere and take the damage...

must admit, the first I played a Metroid game (Metroid Fusion) - I did similarly. Fusion was an even more linear game than Dread though IIRC - it's been a while

Must admit though - for folks who have never played a Metroid game, I think Dread is a perfect start.  I'm quite envious.  It trolled a lot of us old guys by keeping the morph ball away.  We knew it was coming, but it was further into the game than normal.  If you had no idea such an item existed and you kept seeing all these wee tubes around the place - it must've been amazing to finally see those open up for exploration.

I appreciate how ridiculous I'm going to sound, but as much as I love this game - and I really love this game - I think I just don't have the time or patience for some of these fucking boss fights anymore.

There's one I'm stuck on right now that might end up bringing the game to an early close for me, and I think I'm reaching somewhere near the end. I can't do it even after relenting and reading a guide. I don't know how all the rest of you have the patience for it. Even some of the previous ones were fine when I got the sequence I had to do, but were verging on the game-ruining for me until I got it. And I flipping adored all the previous Metroid 2D games. I must just be getting old.

Have you tried watching YT vids? That'll probably be more effective than a guide.

And if I'm stuck on a boss in any game I'llg ive it a few runs where I just try to survive for as long as possible without attacking whatsoever. It's a good way to learn the moveset and the tells. Then, once you're confident, you can start slowly, patiently attacking once more. That's what got me through Hollow Knight, Sekiro and Cuphead.

which one? I’m genuinely shite at games but up till the last boss, none have seemed insurmountable and all of them, once I’ve worked out their patterns have been ended up being a piece of piss.

the one that gave me the most hassle was the big crab thing with the electric ball things… but once I worked that out, he went down like a ton of bricks

Spoiler

The Experiment No. Z-57 boss. I think that might be the one you mean - one of his attack waves is like a Flappy Bird ripoff, and that bit can totally get to fuck.

I have actually done it now, but my God. And the point stands - some of these bosses have driven me insane! But overall the game is fantastic, I can't deny.

Damn, can you not shinespark as a ball in a tunnel? I've been trying to do this puzzle in Ferenia for nearly an hour. I can get next to the block but it doesn't want to fire. Think I'll just have to study it on YouTube.

Edit: ok literally next try it somehow worked...no idea what I did differently. These things are going to drive me insane. 😅

Same, earlier this evening. But I failed. How did you manage it – did you shinespark in in morph ball form?

Ah yeah, took me a good few tries before I nailed it!

I was worried someone might ask because I have no idea. I shinesparked in the ball, yeah. It just seems tempramental whether it works or not in that particular spot.

I’m stuck on the same one and wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing… sounds like I am but just can’t pull it off.

the flappy bird bit?

Spoiler

Just run and boost… and each jump is either a short press, long press or double jump.

That’s it.

Just to be sure we're talking about the same puzzle, it's this one right? (should hopefully be timestamped)

Spoiler

This person found a much easier way than I did. I think they shot the white blocks beforehand whereas I was probably using the cross bomb. They have an absolute age to get into the tunnel. I keep forgetting the final weapon lets you fire through walls.

The script in this continues not to scan at all, but kudos to them for

Spoiler

a story where you turn in to an energy vampire like Colin from What We Do in the Shadows then go out to battle a very large bird.

I think it's mop-up-before-the-final-boss time.

Ah. No. I’m at a different one.

at the entrance to Ferenia.

This one? For some reason it didn't cause me too much trouble.

Spoiler

I have 100% everywhere now apart from Cataris and Burenia with some a particularly evil shinespark puzzles. Oh,

Spoiler

the forgetting I can shoot through walls thing came back to haunt me in Cataris earlier...

yeah, it’s that one. I couldn’t pull off the morph ball to shine spark move then eventually I got to the point that none of my wall jumps were working so I figured my brain had given up after 19388489291035 attempts

I'm really enjoying this. It's hard but not too hard I think. The reason I bounced off Hollow Knight and a lot of other similar games is that dying on a boss puts you way back and you have to spend five minutes returning to die quickly again. I prefer the pretty much instant restart of Dread.
