Metroid: Dread - October 8th

No one talks about the perils of quick resume - an update for the game just installed, and so for the first time during my playthrough I’ve closed and opened the game, meaning I’ve only just heard the intro tune for the first time!

Underestimated how long that final boss would take. Had to give up last night, crazy difficult! Woke up today and my wrist is destroyed.

Don't get me wrong the bosses in this game are pretty good and challenging but it feels a little out of tone with the rest of the games difficulty. Can't imagine many casuals sticking with it on some of the bosses.

I’m not enjoying the game at al at the point I am currently at due to the bosses. The exploration and working out where to backtrack with new skills part is mostly as good as ever, but the difficulty spikes with the boss battles suck all the fun out of the game. Thinking strongly about giving up and bunging the game in the trading folder.

I’m on the home stretch now. Going back for missed items. And yes, I’m getting into the shinespark stuff now.

I’m at 93% in Ghavoran, and there’s a one-way door right at the top of the map, and for the life of me I can’t see how or from where you’re supposed to access what’s on the other side. The areas of the map that are traversable are boxed into dark blue boxes, and this rooms sits outside of that, very perplexing.

@PopoIf it's where I'm thinking, there's a

Spoiler

teleporter up there. If you're at the end of the game you should be able to teleport to it from any other teleporter pod.

@Protocol PenguinWhich boss is giving you trouble? I've still no idea how to properly beat the cross bomb boss.

Spoiler

I can only avoid some of the patterns it would throw at me, but not all, so it came down to RNG both times I beat it.

I play everything on easy, I'm not actually very good at games, it's why I liked turn based JRPG's so much, you could over level and hammer the action button, but, even I managed to finish this.

The bosses are bloody tough, and I was VERY close to binning off the final boss and just watching it on YT, but came back to it the next day and did it on the very first go!

Just keep at it :)

Thanks - I must not be at the end then, because I can’t do that.

Spoiler

Teleporters still link directly to one other teleporter.

But I’ve got all the abilities now, I think.

Spoiler

Power Bomb is last, right?

It’s much, much easier than Super Metroid, Fusion, Zero or Prime.

This is absolutely not true. I recently finished both Zero and Super and they are way, way, way easier than Dread.

Super becomes an absolute cake walk towards the end, and zero is not a hard game at all!

Ok, just finished this. 100%@12:43:45.  I didn't find the final boss that difficult, although I had checked a guide.

Spoiler

If I hadn't learnt the super bomb trick it would've been a lot harder, but phase 1+3 where you can replenish health make the whole thing pretty forgiving.

You guys over-egged it somewhat, I was expecting God of War Sigrun levels of tankiness and battle-length. I was surprised when it suddenly ended. ;)

God, I'm glad Samus' suit reverted back at the end. What an eyesore that mantis-style suit was. I have no idea how that happened though. The animated corpse of Quiet Robe shows up like a xenomorph in a dropship, spaffs an X-parasite, and...profit?

The bosses are much harder than Dread, and Samus is basically invincible in Dread by the time you get the power bomb.

Samus is basically invincible by the end of any metroid game. I've played all metroids recently and I certainly think dread has the hardest bosses.

Super and Fusion had some tough ones but still easier imo.

I beat every boss on my first or second go in Dread, bar the final one. That took quite a few attempts but once I had the timing and signposting down I could reach the final phase without even taking a hit. I struggled with every single boss in Super, and spent *days* trying to beat the plant boss and Ridley in Prime!

I think getting some of the upgrades in this, especially those that need dexterity for the shinesparking, is going to be bloody hard but honestly the only difficult bits in the entire game aside from them are the blue EMMI (until I figured the best place to stand) and the end boss. I found every other Metroid difficult even just wandering round, but here there’s nothing that can really kill you, even with no power ups - you can just walk past most things.

Yeah Dread definitely the hardest Metroid game in terms of bosses. Super's Ridley fight was kinda tough but that's about it. I dont recall Fusion having any difficult encounters though Prime's Meta-Ridley and Omega Pirate fights were a little tougher but still pretty generous in how many mistakes you could make I before needing to retry.

Finished this with 9:32 on the clock. Loads of missing items. Should I literally just carry on from my save game to mop these up or start right from the beginning again? (Not sure there is a 'right' way?)

Last boss was a bastard. This is definitely harder than Super Metroid. Took me about 30 mins of battling it.

Surprised to see this got a meagre three stars in the Guardian.

If Dread isn’t exactly what you’re looking for in a Metroid game I struggle to see what would satisfy you, and I worry that there are some who would read the review, be put off buying the game and experiencing such pleasures for themselves.

Who reviewed it do you know?

A lady called Sarah Maria Griffin. I’m not familiar with her work.

Me neither, I read the review and it at least backs up her opinion, although I don’t agree - I don’t think the game lacks atmosphere for example.
