Chelsea got Atletico at this stage last year, and Bayern Munich the year before. The most recent year they qualified before that they got Barcelona, and that was when Barca were good! Whenever Chelsea have made it past this stage, which until last year was some time ago, they've had to work for it.

Shh... no bringing reality into self pitying draw conspiracy theories!

On the flip side Aston Villa have been drawn against  Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup for the fifth time since the turn of the century.

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that Manchester United have a 100% winning record in that little sequence. But five times in twenty years?  What are the odds of that?

Tin foil hats on. Chelsea’s FA Cup draw history is… fortunate.

It's probably better than average but it hides that at the time several of those teams were PL and that 2/3rds of their possible opponents (44/63) are not.

So it's not QUITE what it looks.  Yes they've not seen a Man City, Liverpool or Utd in that time but there's only about a 1 in 15 chance of facing those 3.

Just one of those quirks of fate it’s enjoyable to indulge in before we’re all dust on the wind.

Did hear Chelsea are getting Barnstoneworth United in the FA Cup semis though.

Leeds are getting a solutely trousered - real second season syndrome for them you feel.

Injuries are the bigger problem & they are only serving to highlight just how small the squad is.

We desperately need to bring 2 or 3 players in during the January window even though it is likely to be costly.

Norwich were absolutely dreadful. They are diabolical defensively and toothless up front, a perfect storm of being pure shit.

That was probably the worst performance under Gerrard from us so far but it didn't really matter, because Norwich were just not there.

I am concerned we're going to be hearing about more Covid in the Villa squad soon. The whole team looked knackered after 60 minutes. Admittedly we are only 3 days it from a hard game at Anfield but still...

It’s mad thinking about how both have been so significant for Man City and Liverpool since that time. Almost certainly without Salah Liverpool would still be waiting for their 19th title and sixth European Cup. And also it also wasn’t really a mistake by Chelsea selling them either, as neither performed at anything like the level required back then (and Chelsea have done okay without them!)

Looking forward to five years or so when Timo Werner scores 55 across the season for Newcastle while leading them to their first Super League title.

I once bumped into Dowie whilst shopping in Croydon. Was a lovely guy but his face looked like it had been carved out of granite by a howitzer. See also John Terry.

Due to a mixture of injuries and COVID, Leicester seemingly have no fit CBs for their game against Spurs tomorrow. They always score lots against us, so (if I was a betting man) I’d be lumping on a hatful tomorrow.
