I'm shocked and delighted by this, I thought he decided to stay? Like it was finished?? He agreed a like 5 year contract didn't he? Something major must have happened??* After last year when it seemed we might see him in the premier league i was gutted it was back to seeing his final years be exactly the same as the last 4, pulling Barcelona through games then getting humiliated in the Champions League where a highly functioning cohesive sharp team is needed to compete and win. I want to see a rejuvenated Messi, I'd get an enormous amount of joy out of seeing him in the premier league, it's embarassing. Seeing Foden play with him.

After last season when his kids were extremely upset and he finally won a trophy with Argentina I thought he'd settled with Barcelona's current state, play with some youth coming through (like Pedri who he loves to play with) and Aguero, his best mate, and see how it goes.

He definitely wants to play in the MLS because America fascinates him so if he just jumps to there already then forget all the excitement. And PSG...i don't care for Ligue 1.

*oh financial and structural difficulties, ok.

PSG got to be favourites I suppose. Man City maybe in with a shout what with the Pep connection (and the billions of pounds floating around of course).

USA maybe?

Juventus would be fun if it meant Messi and Ronaldo in the same team.

From the telegraph

Quote

It is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that Messi does indeed remain at the club this summer, despite the clarity of Barcelona’s statement.

Is it a coincidence that this development comes just days after La Liga agreed a deal to sell 10 per cent of its commercial business to a private equity firm? According to Spanish reports, the move is opposed by both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The statement regarding Messi’s future could, therefore, be construed as an attempt to put pressure on La Liga, who will be well aware of the importance of Messi to the strength of the league.

:hmm:

He took a 50% pay cut, could he not just take a 80/90% pay cut?

So Villa now have £100m to play with. Surely they will spend it better than spuds did the Bale cash.

We’ve already spent it.  Buendia, Bailey and Ings came in at about £90m. Ashley Young came back on a free transfer too.

The club knew Grealish was off a while back so they got deals done early.  I hope it’s a better strategy than the Spurs model of holding out for another £10m before  finding theres one week before the window closes and everybody selling has added a zero to their prices.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we do make another signing but there’s gonna be no mad spree.

Good bit of business for Villa. Grealish is not a 100 million pound player. Haaland or Mbappe on the other hand.

They would cost a bit more I think. £100 million for Grealish is about right.

£100m definitely seems high, but he had quite a few years on his contract didn’t he?

City are playing with an infinite money cheat code and £100m is "fuck you" money.  There is no such thing as market value as far as they are concerned.

It's a shame because a little bit more of football's romance dies at the altar of capitalism, but even with Villa throwing around a lot of money themselves for the past two seasons, they still will never be able to compete with that.

I liked the Purslow address to Villa fans, basically confirming the deal has been done for a while and they were waiting until the replacements had been signed to announce Grealish's move to City.

They've played it almost perfectly by pushing it all onto Grealish wanting to leave to play Champion's League football and for that they should be praised.

I don't think there will be many Villa fans too upset by the situation either.

Still think the Messi situation isn't quite as portrayed - their carefully worded release said Barca & Messi had reached agreement but La Liga rules prevented his re-signing, putting all the onus on the league who may well be panicked at the loss of their star player (THE star player in world football) at a time they are trying to sell 10% of themselves for an over inflated valuation.

With Messi & Ronaldo out of the picture La Liga isn't quite as glamorous as it was -and everybody will be well aware of that.

I still suspect Messi will be turning out for Barca in the coming season somehow.

There's no doubt about that. They are leaning heavily on La Liga to get the lion's share of that money coming in. It's up to the rest of the league to stand against it.

You’ve clearly not spent much time watching  #avfc on Twitter.  It’s cringe.

Being a Liverpool follower I've never had reason to. Previous experiences of Purslow suggests he wants to be famous though, I recall when he was at Liverpool he'd make sure he was in the news often.

Just pondering on the Messi situation and how the situation is clear that Barca are fucked financially - if he loves them that much how about making himself the biggest club legend of all time by playing for free - Barca aren't banned from signing players, just have to meet a salary cap. He's taken hundreds of millions out of them over the years so not on the poverty line and will still have all his commercial income.

Grealish is repped by Johnathan Barnett, a serious agent with an extensive roster of big names.

Kane is repped by his brother Charlie, who has I believe just one client.

please tell me his nickname at school was “coke”…

I like how Laporta keeps mentioning that other teams wanted the salary rules enforced and that they have to abide by them - the unashamed "Yeah, we'd have no problem them bending the rules for us, but those pesky other clubs don't like it" stance is at least honest.

As for him playing for free, @Gottersdid you send a message to the BBC Live text of the press conference, because somebody just said pretty much exactly what you just did?

No I didn't but it's not that 'out there' in his situation - he has no obligation to do it I totally agree and fair play if he wants a million week and PSG pay up.

He's one of the richest athletes ever in sport and his family are settled in Spain - he has no financial need to leave and if he truly feels a debt to the club why not play for free ? If he wants a new sporting challenge and to sample elsewhere then cool too.

Like I say no obligation to do it but also no reason not to if he is so inclined.

La Porta really upping the ante on La Liga there with his whining.
