So rubbish they had a season most of the league would crawl through fire for.

Success of a football team is always contextual though. They had a woeful season in the context of both their history and their resources.

Exactly my thought.  Everything is through the lens of the top six.

In United case it is yes. This is a team that spent 20 years winning everything and constantly getting into the CL. So for a club with their fanbase, player wages, recent history & success, they are well underperformcing.....and it's glorious.

Michael Cox's evisceration of Ralph Rangnick in the Athletic today is lovely stuff.

Spoiler

"Rangnick arrived with minimal pedigree as a manager. His achievement in taking up Hoffenheim and establishing them in the Bundesliga was clearly impressive, perhaps comparable to what Sam Allardyce did at Bolton Wanderers."

The best thing you can probably say about Rangnick is that his teachings and philosophies inspired other managers to take his learnings and make them successful.

The Europa Conference League final is Roma vs Feyenoord is live on YouTube.  Kickoff at 8pm, and the two sets of fans have already been kicking the shit out of each other in Tirana.

Chelsea then.

Have they been allowed to write off a huge loan or did the purchase price cover it.

As far as I understand it the purchase price did cover what Abramovich was owed, but he's committed to using it to aid Ukrainian refugees or rebuilding efforts or something, and the money will be held in a frozen account by the government until that is set-up. I'm sure he'll find a way to get money back from that, but it gives them a way around the sanctions in the short term.

Huge game today - FcSchaffhausen play the first playoff game against FcLuzern at home. The stadium was sold out in record time - I hope the whole organisation around the game will be better than last week.

Anyway, the winner of the two playoff games will play SuperLeague football next season, something FcSchaffhausen haven't done since 2006 or so. We're clearly the underdogs, but still, we've had a run of 10 gmes without a loss (most of then wins), so the team is confident. Unfortunately, the same goes for FcLuzern, who played an abysmal first half of the season but a very good second half...

We'll see how that goes...

The Mbappe transfer-in-that-it-isn't-actually-a-transfer saga stepped up several levels today after the Ligue 1 president released a frankly brilliant letter full of utter fury and vitriol.

(Context for those not following it: Mbappe ran down his contract, went into protracted negotiations with Real, agreed a monumental wage+bonus package, then chose to stay at PSG. Real reacted... well you can probably guess how that went.)

It'll be amusing if these guys falling out actually led to some proper financial regulation of the sport. Haha. Silly me. Anyway, yes watching these corrupt collections of dictators and sportswashers fall out in public is all very funny and I hope it snowballs for a while yet.

No-one seems to be asking Real Madrid a fairly obvious question.  "Considering that you are La Liga champions and in the final of the Champions League, why do you need Kylian Mbappe this badly?"

While I think their tantrums are hilarious, and the fact that La Liga are happy to intervene on Real Madrid’s behalf, the M’Bappe signing does make sense considering the Madrid squad is a bit Dad’s Army right now. Off the top of my head Benzema, Hazard, Bale, Kroos, Modric, Casemiro, Isco & Marcelo are all the wrong side of 30.  Obviously not of those guys play up front but it is time to start bringing young blood in. M’Bappe was probably going to be the face of the club for the foreseeable future and now they are left looking stupid.   They can have Danny Ings for £75m if they wan. He’s only (checks notes) 29.

And it's probably been the best game ever. We drew 2-2,  both times coming back. But the athmosphere and everything was fantastic. Just brilliant!

Kick-off delayed by 15 minutes. Usual UEFA crowd control shitshow.

According to Chris Sutton, who is in the stadium, it's been partly or entirely caused by a large number of fans without tickets trying to get in.  It's reminiscent of scenes at the Euros final.  Is this something English fans do now?  Fucks sake.

Nope, ticketed fans unable to get in. Know people stuck outside.
